I have a trivia question... (1 Viewer)

Raider Nation

Devil's Advocate
You'd think this would be pretty easy to find, but I've had no luck.

I'm wondering which individual has played for the most teams in NFL history.

I don't mean being signed to a practice squad or whatever. I mean having actually PLAYED at least one down in the most different uniforms. My guess is it's either a kicker or a journeyman QB. Any help?

Jeff Van Note played for 18 season with the Falcons. He retired in 1986.

He played in 246 games over this stretch and missed only 4 games.

Not sure if that's the right answer but it's my guess.

i thnk you're answering exactly the OPPOSITE of what he's asking.my guess with positively no basis is Gary Anderson. the guy's been around forever and switched teams a bunch from what i can remember.ETA - just looked it up. only 5 teams. i'm guessing that's not enough.

Definitely not. I would say the winner would have played for maybe 10 teams.I'd also be curious to see the answer for NBA player. THAT has to be 15 teams or so.

well one things for sure, its got to be since free agency was introduced. additionally, i think your estimates are a bit off. in the NFL, i'm thinking the guy probably has 8 teams or so. tops. 7 is a possibility. you forget the league didn't always have 32 teams. 7 back in the day would have been over 25%. as for hoops, 15 is way off, dude. that's half the league. i don't care if you play for 20 years, you're not switching teams each year. that's probably more like 10.naturally, this is all conjecture on my part, but good luck on your search. i'll look forward to the correct answer(s).

Found this on Jeff George:

Jeff George has "played" for 7 different teams: Colts - 4 Seasons Falcons - 3 Raiders - 2 Vikings - 1 Redskins - 2 Seahawks - 2 (no game stats though) Bears - 2 (no game stats though)

link

Well... the best I could do were the following:

Steve DeBerg, 6 teams: 49ers, KC, Broncos, Tampa Bay, Dolphins and the Falcons.

Jeff Blake, 7 teams: Jets, Bengals, Saints, Ravens, Cardinals, Eagles, Bears

just a note in regards to the NBA note i put above. with the all-too-common 10-day contracts, it could easily be up around 15. but now i'm totally consumed with this. still looking::::

Joe Nedney played for 7 teams also.

Miami Dolphins

Arizona Cardinals

Oakland Raiders

Denver Broncos

Carolina Panthers

Tennessee Titans

San Francisco 49ers

It looks like Jeff Brady and Sean Landeta each have 8 years. Here is the bio on Jeff Brady:

Bryan Wagner.

Edit: nope. He was with nine different teams at one time or another, but had regular season punts with only five different teams.

This comes from the NFL Fact and Record Book

http://www.nfl.com/history/randf/records/indiv/service

Sean Landeta, N.Y. Giants, 1985-93; L.A. Rams, 1993-94; St. Louis, 1995-96 ; Tampa Bay, 1997; Green Bay, 1998; Philadelphia, 1999-2002; St. Louis, 2003-04; Philadelphia, 2005
I would consider this 7 teams, not 8, since LA/StL was the same team, just one that moved.
Well, not to mention he played for both Philly and St. Louis twice.

RAIDERNATION is right that this isn't a well-known fact, whether it turns out to be Jeff Brady or someone else. Surprising that it's apparently not officially documented as a record by the NFL or someone who can be relied on as an authority.

7 and 8 don't seem high enough. I can't find any though.

Herschel IIRC was 2 USFL teams and 5 NFL teams so that's 7 too.

Still looking

You are going to have to dig deep. The usual suspects are cutting it.Steve Beuerlein (6) Raiders, Cowboys, Cardinals, Jaguars, Panthers, Broncos

CLE 1989-1994

ATL 1995-96

So this is what we have so far, right?

8 teams

Jeff Brady

7 teams

Jeff Blake

Steve Bono

Chris Chandler

Jeff George (only appeared in a game for 5 teams)

Eric Metcalf

Joe Nedney

Andre Rison

It seems like Rob Johnson has played for a #### load of teams.

I was wrong it is only 4.

I don't think we should be counting USFL teams.

There's an arena league guy who's played for nine teams in eight years, but I think it makes sense to limit this to NFL only. (JMHO.)

It would also be interesting to know who's coached for the largest number of NFL teams. The number will be much greater for coaching than for playing.

The answer to that one comes up quickly in searching for the answer to the player. From ESPN:The record for the most different teams coached in NFL history is 6 by Roy Andrews (1923-31).

That's got to be just for head coaches. I was thinking of coaching in any capacity. I'd think there are plenty of guys who've coached for ten teams, but I could be wrong.

This was my intent, yes.I couldn't care less if someone has played for EVERY team in the CFL, USFL or Arena League.

Dang - somebody beat me to Massenburg. I'm pretty sure he's got that record, although a tie isn't shocking. I have a freind who is a SPurs fan, and when I told him I was a big fan of one of the Spurs - he started guessing. After the normal guesses, he went straight for Massenburg.

MLB I'm pretty sure is Gaylord Perry.

NHL: ???

MLB: Pitcher Mike Morgan - another cool dozen - http://www.baseball-almanac.com/recbooks/rb_ten1.shtml

NHL: Mike Sillinger - there seems to be a pattern here: 12 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Sillinger
