Granted the Pats were getting drilled all night long, how do you pull Brady & Co with over 5 minutes left in a game that three TDs could win?

Trust me, I don't think the Pats had a shot in hell but I am stunned.

Posted this in the game thread.

I don't get it - while it's unlikely, they still do have a chance to win. 3 touchdowns are incredibly unlikely but you wouldn't see Peyton sitting while he still has ANY chance to win the game, no matter how slight it may be.

I've hated the Patriots for some time, but always held a level of respect for them. I lost a bit of respect for the way they played this game. Going for it on fourth down when the logic was they needed to score points? Okay, because you believe you're great at picking those up. Punting it later when it's 4th and 4? Where is that same mentality?

They played aggressively until they realized this wasn't an easy win. Then they folded and played like defeated cowards.

Big thumbs down to these shmucks.

What are your thoughts on this? I can't think of any reason Brady should have been benched when there was still a chance to win.

Brady didn't look quite right but down 3 touchdowns with 2 timeouts, and those weapons, is something the Patriots could pull off.

I lost a lot of respect for the Patriots for this decision.

Smartest play call Beli made tonight...and far smarter than Brees in for his last drive :goodposting:
I thought that was interesting. Pats were showing themselves to be cowards and were trying to surrender but I was surprised to see Payton and Brees refuse to do the same.

Funny. Pats up 48-15 in a game and the starters keep playing. Down by 3 TDs with 5 minutes and then the starters get benched.

I couldn't disagree more. This game was over when Belichick made that decision. While anything is possible, I don't blame Belichick for not expecting his 0.0001% chance of winning this game at that point to come true and I endorse his decision to not risk the rest of his season (i.e. Brady) a possible season ending injury on a meaningless play.Just curious what Patriots you may have on your team(s) and whether or not you lost by a slim margin.

Completely gutless.

Remember when they used the line about how much confidence they had in their offense to justify going for it on 4th and 2 vs. the Colts two weeks ago? Yeah. :goodposting:

Completely agree. Why not give Brady a chance? The Saints offense may be a juggernaut, but there defense can be beaten. Totally lame. Hard to imagine Peyton Manning ever leaving the game when theres a still a glimmer of hope that the team can win.

Oh you mean like when the Patriots have a huge lead and Brady is still back there chucking the ball in the 4th quarter?

yes, we just saw tonight

Remember when he came back on Tampa Bay back in '03 I think it was when they were down 21 with four minutes to go in regulation?

I have 0 Patriots on my team. I have Brees and won by a LOT of points. Even got high score for the week in my league.Heck, I was going against Moss, but I still thought it was a bad move to bench him and Brady.

I think the word "glimmer" overstates the chance of victory at the point of Brady getting pulled (if that is possible). This thread is definitely ridiculous. I know this move goes against past Belichick decisions in leaving his players in games that were thoroughly decided with 5 minutes left (with the Pats usually the victor in most of them), but this was the smart move for once.

 This is what really disgusted me.

It's one thing if Belichick regularly benched Brady when his team had a big lead at the end of games.

But he's a guy who likes to 'play all 4 quarters.' It simply reeked of total cowardice.

This is stinky bait, folks.

Belichick leaving starters in = bad decision

Belichick taking starters out = bad decision

Belichick blowing his nose = bad decision

etc

I already commented on that in my last post prior to this. Belichick made the smart move for once. I agree it goes against his prior decisions, but this was a smart one tonight.

This is the classic example of an internet story, and it's important only to fantasy football players who lost potential points. I predict you won't hear one mention of it on TV or anywhere in the media.

u mean the 5 more pts i needed from brady tonight to win to make the playoffs, or the 2 pts i needed from welker (on another team) to keep the team im fighting for the last playoff spot out? yeah...great ending to a fantasy football season right there, hats off the saints D, ironically enough sitting on my bench, having gotten me through a lot of this season, see you all next year

The shot of Brady and Bilicheck staring up at the scoreboard and tsk tsking. if you could caption the image of the thoughts going on in thier minds:

Wow, a QB that is superior, and a coach that is also superior.

They got :own3d:

Honestly, they had the look of a former champion who just realized that his best punch just isn't good enough anymore (or at least this year).

2003 Colts/Bucs recap
It was a similar situation in that both the Colts and Pats got the ball back with 5 minutes left...except that the Colts (in the game you are talking about) got the ball back at the Tampa Bay 12 yard line, while the Pats got it at their own 27. I am sure in a similar situation with the Pats getting the ball deep in Saints category Brady would have been in the game, but having to drive the whole field in light of what they had done all game long --- i think it's easy to see why they didn't expect to be able to score 3 times and stop the Saints every single time.

I'm sure the math backs this up too.
More patriot statisticians you could have ever dreamed existed will descend upon this here thread and wail and cry and stomp their feet trying to convince you that everything Bill Belichick does is genius. And, if it looks stupid, it's because you're too stoopid to get it. See? that's the genius of Bill Belichick. Even today's loss was genius. I mean who thinks up this ####? Lose on purpose? Get embarrassed? This sets up the larger plan, the larger goal. It's all in there if you just dig a little.I might have taken 1 too many ambien.

I heard the Patriots win the Super Bowl 92% of the time Brady gets benched on the last Monday of the month while having a hemorrhoid. I'm sure BB factored this into the decision

For those of you defending the Belichick's decision in this one - do you think he'll bench Brady and company the next time he's winning by a large margin with minutes to go?

If you think he'll actually bench the guys, then this game may have been the moment where he realized the error of his ways.

If he keeps his guys out there like he normally does, it only confirms the level of disgust that should be given to the Patriots in regard to this game.

The people who should be most upset are the ones who took the over in this game (it was 57 or 58 depending on where you get your info) and having the Pats fall short on their end with the total being just 55 (38-17) when it looked like this was going to be an easy over around halftime to the 3rd Q.

Non issue, really. I think BB basically said get off the field if you aren't going to play. They'll likely lick their wounds, regroup, and use this game as motivation.

No, I don't think he'll bench them in that situation. I was just saying that his decision just happened to be the smart one this time. You can possibly say that he is being consistent here, even though you are saying he isn't. In blow out wins, the starters stay in. In blowout losses, the starters come out.

If Brady had stayed in the game down 3 TDs with 4 minutes left, and had sustained a season ending injury,

then you would have a valid reason to start a thread.

This thread is a total joke.

You mean, like he did in week 6 when Brady sat out the entire fourth quarter?
:own3d: I think winning a game 59-0 is a little different (even in Belichick's world) than being up a measly 30 pts...haha

Even though they call this the "shark" pool, I am always amazed by the number of people who just don't understand the game... don't understand the coaching... don't understand the philosophy... don't understand the rules... don't understand anything...You, my friend, are one of those schmucks.High five!

It will be brought up by the media I can assure you. There was five minutes left. Throw it up to Moss 4 times and see what happens. Horrible decision and I own no Patriots.

Steve Young just brought it up.

well you're totally wrong as the ESPN guys are discussing it this very second

I don't understand as much as many others, but I understand more than enough to know Belichick shouldn't send his starters back into the game in a blowout win.So I don't understand why he doesn't send them back out in a blowout loss.ETA - a blowout loss that did have a chance (slim at best) to come back. 5 minutes is a lot of time - a lot of things can happen. The Patriots can put up a lot of points in a short period of time.

Disagree. Here are some early comments from ESPN:* Teddy Bruschi just said he was very disappointed that Brady didnt go back in the game with 5 minutes left.* Steve Young said that it felt like youre beating your older brother in a game of chess and instead of him playing until the final whistle he overturns the board
