I love EDM! (1 Viewer)

I am 37 years old and I have a confession. I love EDM. I cant get enough of it. I dont know what happened to me.

David Guetta, Calvin Harris, Kaskade, DeadMau5, Tiesto, Allesso, Avici, etc

My Pandora station is nonstop EDM!

Question: When did everyone start calling it EDM?

In the 90's, I felt like Electronica was the catch-all, but everyone was very specific about what they listened to, House, Techno, Trance, Drum and Bass. Is it not like that any more?

It's like Wikipedia reads my mind:

In 2010, the acronym "EDM" was adopted by the American music industry and music press as a buzzword to describe the increasingly commercial US electronic dance music scene.[4][5] Other dance music communities have questioned the idea of EDM as blanket term for all electronic dance music and the term has instead been associated with specific dance sub-genres that became popular in the US, such as electro house and brostep. EDM is not a genre in its own. Younger dance music fans and more mainstream/new listeners to the dance music genre use EDM as a genre in itself simply because they do not know how to decipher the spectrum of dance sub genres. Ellie Goulding has a voice like an angel. I dont consider her an EDM artist but she appears on a few songs. Burn makes me feel like a giddy school girl when it comes on.

I like to credit DeadMau5 with my official transition into GET OFF MY LAWN. I listen to a lot of different music, and even still a lot of electronic music -- but DeadMau5 is ####### terrible. :shakesfist:

Same age, and I love it as well. BPM, Electric Area, and Chill are the most heavily played XM music stations in my car

Granted I still listen to a lot of talk radio though as well.

You must start listening to the Monstercat Podcast every week.. it's an hour of awesomeness

I also have Mark Farina and Madeon Pandora stations. Both good.

EDM is kinda viewed as the Justin Bieber of the electronic music world by the more serious electronic music fans... but there's definitely some pretty solid stuff out there.

For some more varied stuff that's still pretty accessible to those new to electronic music:

Kruder & Dorfmeister : "Conversations : A K&D Session"

Underworld "Second Toughest of the Infants"

ATB : Ministry of Sound's "Clubber's Guide To Trance"

Hybrid "Wide Angle"

- old guy who's been listening to electronic music since the early 90's.

Am I old because I don't know what EDM is?
No, you are old because of your age, not because of your ignorance.
Wait. Age makes me old? When did this start or is this a new thing?

It's all explained clearly and concisely in this post.

I remember the exact moment.

I was in a club in Colorado, and was chatting with the managing partner, and the speakers started making a terrible sound. I gave my buddy a sad look, and said, "Hey man, your toolbox DJ just blew a speaker."

"Nah, that's Dubstep."

please stop calling it EDM.
Lots of schools of thought on this but the prevailing one I've heard is EDM is in reference to the megaDJ Pop-Electro stuff. There are others who simply hate the term altogether.

I can guess which camp you fall into. ;)

I don't mind it, as long as you're not using it as a term to describe all electronic music.

:bag:

Very much a fan here as well. While other acts conflicted I did catch bits of Skrillex and Calvin Harris and almost all of Zedd at ACL.

:goodposting:

I'm the same age, love it

P.S. deadmau5's new album was free last week on google play, not sure about this week.

Also, a coworker asked me if I had heard of Dead Mao Five recently. I managed to avoid mocking him, but when I explained it, he made fun of himself a bunch anyway, which was appropriate.
