Here's some legitimate advice if you really want to actually take a step at improving your future. You want to work 40 hours of retail now? Fine. Around October/November, start reaching out to local CPAs to see if they need someone to help out during the busy season pre-April 15. Some may tell you they don't need help, some will say to check back again in a couple of months. But you now have an email you can respond to when the time comes. Hopefully you have a few different people you can approach. Maybe one of them turns into part time work for a couple days a week, if not more. You can then drop some of your BB schedule to accommodate this.

If no one bites, offer to volunteer 2x a week under what you'll put on your resume as an internship. Even if you're just making copies and/or filling the copier with paper it will look much better than just having a retail job. Make sure you save enough from your BB time to cover the $12/hour x 8 hours x 2 days you're losing each week. If you can't sacrifice that, I don't know what to tell you.

I'm really good at job interviews. Within 5 minutes I've usually got the hiring manager's eyes wide and ready to offer me the position.

My interview was for Inventory Specialist, unloading trucks. Halfway through the interview she decided I was overqualified and wanted me in a sales position. I had a second interview on the spot with a different manager, nailed it... and walked out with a job offer.

Went from interviewing for a job paying $9-10 an hour with a potential of 10-15% bonus to a $12 an hour job with a potential for a 30% bonus.

The school I'm going to is geared towards young professionals. Most of the classes only meet one day a week for extended hours.
That's not what I asked. Are you getting 40 hours / week right out of the gate? Because that is what makes zero sense. No business is going to want to have to provide benefits to every random entry level schlub off of the streets.

I think you're missing the idea that I have zero interest in being a server. I've done it before and honestly it's woman's work.

I would not excel because I hate the work. Hours of being on your feet, running food to multiple tables, dealing with grouch customers, constant refills.

No thanks. The only reason I had any success at Olive Garden was because I was Italian. It's just not a good fit for me, I was very unhappy.

I left that job to work at Walgreens.
Past tense, as in you have now given it up?

Well if being Italian was not a good fit I think you did the right thing in giving it up.

Perhaps you should look into publishing, maybe as an Editor.  Your writing is unparalleled.

You gotta understand some of the way I phrase stuff is purely for entertainment purposes. it's a gift.

Yes, it is full time. I am not a random entry level schlub. I am an asset and a national treasure.

Well, the world needs ditch diggers too!

Seriously, best of luck with both your job and school.  Block, tackle, follow the ball and things should payoff in the long run.

Hope this works out for you:  Couple questions -

  • How many more classes can you take from Baker that are going to transfer?
  • How many classes can you take while working 40 hours a week?
  • 23 classes is tough in 4 semesters plus a summer - 2 years seems overly optimistic especially considering your proposed work schedule.
  • What jobs exist that you can get that don't involve kissing customers asses?
  • Do you know if the Best Buy store targets are reasonable?  Can you count on the extra $1.80 to $3.60/hour?
  • Do you think more hot 20-25 year olds work at Best Buy or local restaurants?
Best of luck.
With certainty, there are 4 classes I know can transfer. Two economics classes and two missing general educations, I need one more Science and Humanity.

Working 40 hours a week, I would like to take 4 classes a semester. 5 would definitely be pushing it. It may be possible due to the structure of these classes, as you can see from this link, most of these classes are only once a week for 2 hours and 45 minutes. Combine that with a few online courses and I think it's possible.

23 classes is a lot but there are 4 classes I for sure that I can get whacked out through Baker. Which brings me down to 19. If I can test out of College Algebra it brings me down to 18. So then I can take 4 classes over the summer and bring it down to 14. Lots of combinations from here:

Fall 17: 4 classes (10 remaining)

Spring 18: 4 classes (6 remaining)

Summer 18: 4 classes (2 remaining)

Fall 18: 2 classes (0 remaining)

If I can manage to take 5 classes twice, I can finish in June of 2018. Obviously I'll have to see what the appropriate balance of work and school I am able to keep up with, I'll may have to shift one of the two to part-time to avoid poor performance in either.

I can think of plenty of jobs that don't involve kissing customers asses. Most jobs in accounting, economics, and finance deal with pure numbers. If you're talking jobs currently available to me, they all require you to kiss ### but not to the point where you're fellating them to pad your wallet, aka tip.

I don't know if the targets are reasonable but it's based on store performance as opposed to the individual. So really this metric falls on the Store Manager pulling their weight and getting their team to produce. I'll know pretty quickly now often and how close we are to reaching these goals.

More hot girls at restaurants for sure but I actually want to enjoy my job. If I'm miserable at work, I'm not going to be picking up many chicks.

Not only will you get the experience while you're working but you might make some connections to that will help post-degree.  You'll also look much more attractive to a prospective employer if you spent your time making ~$12 an hour doing accounting support instead of selling cell phones.

Awesome advice here, I appreciate the insight.

I don't know why I care or even why I'm asking but why did you move across the state from the school you are planning to go to? Wouldn't it be better to live in the area and meet people before you start school? I usually see a giant pickup truck with a 2 huge confederate flags bolted on to it on my way to the office everyday, you could meet that guy.

I have an Econ degree and an MBA and I deal with millionaires on a daily basis. There is a lot of ego to be stroked.  I don't think you have the math background to handle pure number jobs based on you hoping to test out of college algebra.  I didn't go further in Econ because I would have needed basically a bachelors in Math.   My buddy is a successful actuary but he has a masters degree in applied mathematics.

Best of luck with the new job and I hope you can get the in state tuition quickly.

Worth a shot to see if you could get internship credit from your school for this on top of it. Worst case they say no.

I decided to take the job at Best Buy. The money lead me to AT&T but my gut kept bringing me back to Best Buy.

My big fear was that if I didn't reach my sales goals, there would be no recourse within the company for me; I would be given the boot and be right back to where I am now.

The big deal breaker for me was that this AT&T store wasn't owned by AT&T but a 3rd party retailer.

While the compensation potential is less, I feel Best Buy offers more job security and is more appropriate for me going through college. I'm going to be stressed out enough with my studies, let alone worrying about not reaching my sales goals and not having a job at all.

If I bust my ### for a year, I can probably get promoted to a supervisor role making $18 - 20 an hour.
Congrats on the job man.  You should be proud.  Don't pay any attention to people saying otherwise.  The key to success is to take yourself seriously, to have a constant desire to learn and absorb as many skills and experiences as you can, and most importantly to have an insatiable hunger to strive (a solid work ethic).   Reading through the thread--it sounds like you are planning on working full time while taking courses for your degree--and there is no world where that is a bad thing.   Keep up the hard work and the success will come.

I'm curious, Em...you up and moved to Florida without a job?  Are you living with your parents?

UPDATE:

I began to have doubts if I made the correct decision shortly after I took the Best Buy job and informed AT&T that I was no longer interested. Money being the primary motivation and being able to sit on my tush all day. Shortly after I took the job, a girl my age came into Walgreens who worked at AT&T and I asked them a medley of questions.

Do you like your job? Yes, I love my job.
Are the sales goals hard to reach? No, I'm already at 53 of the 50 opportunities required to make commission (this was on the 15th).
How much is your commission a month? Between $780 to $2,000.

So I was really bummed that I made the wrong decision. While I was on the casino boat the next day, I received a phone call from the manager at AT&T who informed me that the job was still available and he would like for me to come work for him. "Best Buy is notorious for cutting your hours, you'll make more here, etc". At this point, I was second guessing my first decision and obliged to all of his requests. The next day, I call Best Buy and turn down the job offer and head into AT&T.

I was in for a few surprises when:

1.) I wasn't being offered the job, I was having a second interview with the District Manager.
2.) The base pay wasn't $12.00 an hour PLUS commission, it was $12.00 an hour UNTIL I receive commission then it becomes $10.00 an hour plus commission.

I go home frantic that I had been mislead and wrongfully turned down the job at Best Buy, so I gave Best Buy a call to see if I could right the ship but of course it was too late. "Sorry, the job offer has been rescinded and offered to somebody else." I turned down a guaranteed job offer to interview with the district manager who I haven't heard back from (today is the second day since, I interviewed with him on Wednesday. But there is a silver lining because I never leave myself without a backup plan.

I had an interview for a Freight Coordinator making $10.00 at a privately owned business (the owners work there with us and oversee operations). When they saw my Accounting Degree on my resume, they instead interviewed me for an Accounts Receivable position which is a great opportunity to get some actual entry-level Accounting experience and fluff my resume a little bit. The pay is only $10.00 an hour but I don't plan to be there long-term.

The business is closed on the weekends so I'll be able to indulge into all my fantasy football and sports betting adventures without an incident...  and I get my own desk! I shadow the Accounting Manager on Monday and after that, I assume it will become official.

If nothing pans out drop me a PM. I can get you an interview with Amazon right outside Tampa for a warehouse specialist position.
