I still believe in Jake Delhomme (1 Viewer)

It's shocking what's happened over the past 2 games and it's amazing how this guy has turned a usually laid back fanbase completely against him, but I think everyone's over-reacting in a big way.

This guy is a capable QB that had 2 horrible games.

I thought the Panthers were smart to give him the extension at the time and I still think they were smart to do it.

He's going to get it turned around.

I just wanted to throw this out there in time for the Panthers to beat the Falcons tomorrow so that I can look smart.

ETA: I don't mean for fantasy purposes. Just for football purposes. They'll have a slower season b/c of the schedule, but they aren't going 5-11 because of bad QB play. I see a .500 season with decent QB play.

As a Falcons fan whose watched Delhomme two times/year, I've always thought he was an incredibly scrappy player who needs his emotion to excel. Guys like Brady, Manning are cold blodded killers, but it seems like Delhomme needs to ride those emotional waves to hit his peak performance. Guys like this are spikey...on one week/off the next.

That said, as it relates to the match-up, the one that IMO is more relevant is the Michael Turner to whomever the Panthers have playing DT now (I think they'll be starting Louis Leonard a waiver wire pick-up of a couple of weeks back). Alot will have to go right for the Panthers for them to win IMO.

People are irrational when it comes to the playoffs and week 1; that's always been and always will be the case. Delhomme led the league in yards per completion and led the league in air yards per attempt. He's not a star, but he was very good at getting the ball to his playmakers last year, and that's a QB's most important job.I think the evidence is overwhelming that he'll turn things around (assuming the Panthers don't bench him). Tomorrow is a likely first step in that turnaround, so I agree with you.

I'm a Panther fan and I haven't turned against Jake, and neither has a lot of other fans. You will always read or hear negative things from some fans of all teams when things aren't going well. Unfortunately Jake has put up back to back bad performances, so it has sparked a lot of talk. I am worried about Jake's confidence, but I think he will turn it around. If he doesn't then the Panthers won't have much of a choice other than to try someone else behind center. I hate to see that happen because Jake is such a likeable guy and a great leader, but it's a business, and if you don't perform well you are replaced.

I saw a poll that asked who should the Panthers start for the rest of the season with Jake, Moore, and Feely the choices and Jake had over 50% of the vote. Now, of those 3 it's a no-brainer, he is the best Carolina has, but I'm with the OP. I think he rights the ship. Bill Simmons wrote an article about Jake this week. Some of the things he said in there are stupid. Jakes isn't going to think "I've hit the bottom, I may as well have fun..." but I do agree that the best thing for Delhomme is playing @ Atlanta and @ Dallas followed by a bye week. He doesn't have to hear the rabid boooos sailing down from his own fans for almost a month.

I liked the Simmons article. I'm definitely in the camp that thinks going on the road could be the best thing for him. Could totally see him playing well this week and creating a bunch of feel-good stories/articles. But if I were a Panthers fan I'd just feel like it would be delaying the inevitable. His days of QB'ing a serious contender are done imo.

To add - there are interceptions and then there are REALLY bad interceptions. Jake tends to throw those in the latter category. We're not talking deflections, slipped receivers, etc. We are talking throws into triple coverage that have no chance, missing his receiver by 5 yards. How that can inspire confidence in anybody is beyond me. Again, this isn't a QB thrown to the wolves situation. He has a great offensive line (even though Philly blitzed relentlessy, overall they are good), a great running attack, and a star WR. Just don't lose games. And he loses games.

One of his interceptions WAS deflected, and another tipped last weekend. As for their offensive line, they are usually good, but last weekend they didn't play well.

If I were a Panthers fan I probably would have blown my head off by now. Delhomme is just too inconsistent to take a team anywhere. Unless that defense figures out how to dominate, they are going nowhere. I don't get how he can be a capable QB (by going .500) for a team that was 12-4 last year. Honestly, there have been analysts that have called the Panthers contenders every year and Delhomme is the reason they haven't for years and won't ever again. You don't pay a QB his age to be capable enough for an average season. Best case scenario for the Panthers? Delhomme retires or gets injured.

I WANT to believe in Jake, but don't. Yes he's a nice likable guy, but he stinks now. Mental, physical, I don't know, but he's killing that team right now. I REALLY hope he has a great game tomorrow, if not, they have to forget the money and play the guy who gives them the best chance to win. If he throws another 3+ picks tomorrow, then there is no denying he no longer gives them the best chance to win any games.

He did not lead the league in ypa, and who cares about ypc? He was still had a nice ypa though. I also think he leans more on a great WR for his success then any other QB. The jump balls Delhomme limp wrists out there that Smith comes down with are ridiculous.

Steve Smith is a great receiver, but when he was out with a broken leg one season Muhammad was the #1 receiver in the NFL with Delhomme throwing to him.

Probably not fantasy relevant, but even Smith is saying some stuff:

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/...me-were-a-joke/

"I never really liked you as a quarterback. But as a person ... I love you as a person."

Later ..

"(It) got a little local buzz or national buzz about me being mic'd up last week and what I said to Jake. It is very interesting that some of the you tubes and some of the people have taken it like...I said that completely in jest."

Smith and Delhomme are very close friends. Smith was joking with him. Is that hard for some to understand?

Later he also said ""As a performer, I don't really care about Jake as a performer," Smith added. "When I look at Jake and what I respect Jake as is a man and I think that is the most important thing that you can respect anybody is who they are and not what they do."I don't know, it's definitely a joke but also not a vote of confidence either IMO. His back-pedaling here is not a ringing endoresment.

It really isn't backpedalling. It is trying to keep the media from blowing it up. People are trying to find anybody they can to help create a story.

Smith was mic'd up for the game. This was overheard between smith and Jake. It was clearly a joke. There was a link somewhere in a different thread on this as well. I saw it in cnnsi somewhere. It was mentioned there that it was a joke between the two of them as they knoew Smith was mic'd.Whole lot of nothing to see here.

i had him last year and he killed my year. i used Delhomme for matchups and the guy is horrible. his arm looks shot. confidence shot, ect..

i had steve smith so i watched all CAR games and he could not reach smith downfield. smith would turn 9-10 yard passes into 40 yard YAC. he would actually subtract from my totals which is something i don't ever need, ala last week's game. trust me its not worth hoping on this guy.

Has there ever been a bigger disconnect between the stats and the people who actually watched him last year?

I'm amazed at the disconnect between these two camps.

Funny how in some threads, you say that the adjusted YPA is the most important stat, and in others, you rely on straight YPA.

The problem with Delhomme is that he WAS a capable QB- but he didn't have much that was special. Hes 34 and had major elbow surgery two seasons ago- if hes losing some of his physical ability it is going to be downhill F A S T from here on out.
