I wanna be rich (1 Viewer)

Didn't you guys know? Instead of becoming a state Puerto Rico has decided to join Costa Rica as one nation. Thus Costa Rico. Gee guys read a newspaper.

I tell you what, Oats, I have an idea for a product that would make some serious money. You kick in the patent/trademark legwork and some cash for development, and we'll go halvsies.

How's everyone in here feeling today? Some folks were pretty upset yesterday about other folks wanting to be rich. We doing better on that front, or not really?
Well my net worth declined yesterday when the stock market went down.. but is up today as the market rises.. also it's been a pretty productive day at work... I've made quite a bit of money so far..

So overall I think I'm at least 1.25 days closer to retirement than I was yesterday

$5.6 million:

$800K to buy a house outright

$800K in property taxes for 40 years

$100K/yr clear to spend for 40 years

Pooling all resources, I've got like 10% of that number. :wall:

Otis, you'll never be rich and retire because no matter what you have you want more. If you got $9m, you'd just want $100m so you could do the things people with $100m do.

Learn to be happy with what you have (which appears to be a lot), and you can quit worrying about it.
Just going back and reading some of this from yesterday. I'll cop to this one. Not in that I want to do what others with more would do, but that no matter what I have I feel driven to make more to be in that next level up of being able to feel secure and make sure my family is in great financial shape. It's just kind of the way I'm wired. It's not an unhappy feeling but just more of a driving force and honestly I think it's that drive that helps people achieve things.

I'm the same way. Nothing wrong with it IMO.

At some point it becomes a treadmill.

A little exercise never hurt anyone.

This is a great post and so true... When I was younger, I thought "man, if I could make $X a year I'll be so happy"... Now I'm basically there and feel like a schleprock. I see people buying $4MM brownstones in my neighborhood all cash left and right and I feel like, WTF, I should be able to do that... Hopefully one day I will, but if I ever get there, then I'll see others buying who knows what and think I want to do that!

In all honesty, I think the drive is a good character trait, but the people who can learn to relax are prob happier regardless of income :kicksrock:

Yeah chasing something you'll never catch is great if you're a greyhound I guess.

It does. My wife recognizes it about me too. But honestly it's what drives me and I actually get enjoyment out of it. Sometimes I have to step back and say it's ok if I miss on this deal or that deal. I think it's a problem if you dread work every day but can't let go or something like that. If you're making it while doing something that you honestly can't imagine doing any kind of work that you would enjoy more, then it's pretty rewarding.

I want a stable of international hotties sworn to pleasure me no matter the cost. Also, I would like to be rich.

We need people like you.

The country needs people who either burn through all their money and need to keep working and keep reaching... or people that achieve financial freedom and yet still continue to innovate.

There are thousands upon thousands of people still creating, still working... even though they have the necessary funds to live out their remaining days on a private island sipping 100 year old scotch, getting a daily massage with a happy ending from a large breasted woman, playing video games, reading books... basically living the G.D. DREAM.. and they aren't living that dream!! And that pisses me off... but I get it in a way.

Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Warren Buffet, Roger Federer, Magic Johnson, most CEO's... etc.

The type of people who are wired to be anywhere from very successful to super successful are exactly the type of guys would never be happy living the dream of a leisure/hedonist lifestyle.

And it's a damn shame.

I think for a lot of people though it becomes a lot like cocaine. Always chasing that first high. But you can never recreate the first time. As long as you keep your perspective straight you are probably alright.

Was going to write the same thing that thank goodness for people like MD. I've got little drive. I've reached a point where I'm just going to cruise along career wise for the next 15 years or so and then maybe retire or maybe not b/c its easy money. If the country was filled with people like me, this place would come to a grinding halt.

I used to feel this way. Now I've got my life set up to where I don't feel like I need a bunch of money to escape it. It certainly comes with its own issues and isn't for everyone, but I'm pretty happy.

I have a billion dollar invention. But I have to win the lottery before I have the money/time to build it.

When I left my last job, I was unemployed for about 6 weeks. It wasn't a bad 6 weeks.

Hint: anyone figuring out their retirement nut by dividing their annual spending by an imaginary interest rate is going to have a bad time.

Ran up a $6k+ poker bankroll in the past 24 hours. This might work. What's $6k x 365?
This is starting to sound eerily familiar to an Eminence thread.
Starting?
Look, I'll admit I've got a near monopoly on the interesting aliai around here, but you think you guys would be a little more grateful. If you want me to retire my studs, Gekko, Joe Bryant, peens, woz, and dancing bones aliai all at once, just go ahead and ask me nicely, I'll do it.

I might buy Gekko out of that list.

Joe Bryant is still my favorite.

I'll pay you $15 million to retire your timschochet alias.

Oh god. Friend, I'm dedicated, but I don't have that kind of time.

If people can even get to 20x their spending they are doing alright. You can quibble about "is it really enough?" all you want but it's a good starting point.
