I've always called him "fools gold" as he does that but is never consistant. I had him one year as my 5th LB and started him a handful of games on bye weeks (start 4 LB) and I think he is good for that but I certainly wouldn't count on him as an every week starter. BUT if you got a scrub on your roster to replace you could do worse.
Gold was out of position in Tampa Bay. He blew his knee out early the season before in Denver. BUT, before the injury he was the #1 scoring IDP in all of football in pretty standard scoring. This was with 4 or 5 weeks in the book that season (and he fell off that pace a week before the injury). So, he comes back to Denver last year and has an okay season-- 90 total tackles, 3 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, this is a pretty solid and under the radar performance. He really caught my eye last night. His tackling is text book and effortless. Something you couldn't say a couple years ago. He looks a little slim and fast as ever. 28 years old, smart, mature, three years removed from the knee blow out-- this is a fully realized football player and an almost flawless WLB, imo. It's his bye week. I am hoping he hits waivers somewhere. He's set for a big year. The sacks, picks and big plays are coming, he's always had a knack for them, and the rest of his game has never looked so solid.
I agree with CC's assessment. I think Gold will have a better statistical season this year. It'll be interesting to see if he can ascend to consistent LB2 numbers in this defense.
Many of Gold's tackles last night came against the Patriots' tight ends and running backs, mostly on the crazy number of circle route passes caught by Faulk and Maroney. Brady threw to a TE/RB 18 times last night, which is (pun intended) gold for a WLB playing a fair amount of Cover-2 as the Broncos like to do while they're ahead. Interestingly, the Broncos actually played more three corner nickel defense last night than their usual Cover-2 even when Darrent Williams went out but I digress. A quick glance at Gold's game logs over the past two seasons show his best games come against teams with excellent TE/RB receiving combos with relatively weak WR (KC, NE, MIA, BAL, PHI).
The Broncos defense is still good enough (particularly against the run) that Gold's opportunity will continue to be limited somewhat. But with Al Wilson looking shakier than ever in run support IMO, Gold should have pretty good value. He picked up more tackles in run support late in the game than he would've in the past.
jene, i was watching the game helter skelter last night and didnt really catch any consistent action. i did however notice that gold's numbers were excellent and that dj williams had a spike in his numbers also. did the broncos move these guys around at all with wilson sitting out much of the game? and if wilson were to miss a few games with the tender hammy, would there be any position changes for the lb in denver or would nate webster just take wilson's spot while he was out ?

I think DJ Williams' numbers were good for two reasons. He usually does well against teams that throw to TE on running downs (because Gold and Wilson play in nickel situations) -- the Patriots certainly apply. But Williams did get a lot of nickel snaps with Wilson in and out of the lineup last night.Anything is possible in Denver. Hard to know about Webster. It's possible he'd step in at MLB. He was inactive last night, mostly because Burns, Chukwurah, and Green are better special teamers. Chukwurah got most of the snaps last night, but it was Williams and Gold with three corners most of the way since the Broncos were ahead. My guess is that Webster would probably step in, but Williams would have a much bigger role in passing situations.
Sorry for the hijack,but was considering dropping Nick Barnett and picking up Gold.What do y'all think?[solo=1, Sack=2, FF=3, FR=2, PD=1, INT=3, TD=6, Safe=2, Bl.Kick=3]
