Ideas on how to improve... (1 Viewer)

If you could make one change, but only one change, to either real football or fantasy football -- what would it be?

It's a straight forward question. Just looking for different ideas from isughtful people as to what would make the fantasy game or the real game better.

No extra points, no field goals.

On 4th down you go for it or punt. If you score you have to run an actual football play to get any additional points. It doesn't matter to me if you get 1 or 2 points for it, I'm just sick of soccer players deciding football games.

Head coaches must inform the fans who will be the featured back every game.
This is genius... and it would make starting either a Patriots running back or a Broncos running back that much more safe. I probably still wouldn't do it, but I'd feel better about it if I had to.And the XFL didn't fail because it tweaked the NFL's rules. The XFL failed because it was filled with inferior players and was headed by a guy that knows nothing about football. Rule changes and game advancements work in the NFL because it's the unquestioned king of sports in America. People aren't going to tune it off if they're dissatisfied with a minor tweak. Think instant replay and the yellow first down line on TV. Both are advancements of the past twenty years, and both make watching the NFL better (IMHO). On the other hand, the fact that cornerbacks can't even sneeze on receivers anymore without a flag being thrown is also a recent development, and that makes the game worse (IMHO). Change happens.

Get rid of commercials. Seriously. Move to the soccer format if you have to (advertise on player jerseys) but keep the game flowing...

Fantasy wise – award the QB and receiver the penalty yards on pass interference calls.

Maybe not at the same rate as a normal catch but it would be nice if they earned something.

Real - Take away most of the rules involving the hitting/tackling of quarterbacks. Most of those rules are simply a construct of the league trying to protect its portfolio by keeping the big name guys on the field, thus selling jersey's, tickets, beer, etc. IMO they diminish the game by handcuffing the defenses natural aggression.

change the OT to no more coin flip. instead the coaches write down where they want the ball, then the ref reads each bid the one who bid the lowest gets the ball first.

1. You gotta let the players celebrate. Last season the play that I remember most is Welker making a snow angel after a TD. Even the other team was laughing. How is it unsportsmanlike to make everybody laugh?!?!?! This year already a guy did a backflip in the DET/ATL preseason game and got flagged. It's borderline wrong.

2. Rookie pay scale. It is getting out of control. They almost need a system just like the NBA (although probably all salary limits would be higher)

Make the head coaches wear uniforms like baseball Helmet pads and all this would be hilarious Can you imagin Bill Belicheck on the sidelinf in full football gear im damn near in tears as I type this

This is awesome. If they did do this, I'd have to insist that they wear the old-school single bar face mask.On a side note, though, I'd miss that one-piece flight suit (or whatever it is) that Andy Reid wears on the sideline.

And I agree that the rookie pay scale is the most pressing change that needs to occur. It's an absolute must.

The worst teams are getting hamstrung by having to give humongous contracts to unproven players. I swing and a miss early in the draft (which happens often and can happen to any team), can set back a franchise for years because of the sheer amount of money you need to invest in that player. The purpose of the worst teams picking first -- to give them the best chance to turn-around their fortunes -- has a diminished effect as a result.

Nah, the old leather helmets are the way to go here.

overtime rules in the NFL suck
 A coin toss is ridiculous to determine the outcome of a game.I'm in favor of a collegiate like system where the overtime has rounds. In each round, each team gets the ball from the opponents 40, and can advance the ball within the standard 4 down structure. You play sudden death by rounds. The game is decided when during one round one team outscores the other.Play on ...TD vs TDFG vs FGMissed FG vs Missed FG4th Down stop vs 4th Down stopOne team wins ...TD vs FGTD vs 4th Down stopTD vs Missed FG

The only i would do with ot is instead of first team scoring play a whole quarter sort of like the nba so instead of 15 min play a 10 min quarter

The worst thing about football isthis:

team scores TD > goto commercial > team kicks off > goto commercial

UGH

Players not allowed to hold out if under contract!! You signed the ******* contract yourself.....complete the duration of it!!

nfl

rookie pay scale auto when drafted

no overtime, have ties in the reg season . i loved how ties added variety to % of season end/playoff determination .

playoffs keep overtime system as is .

fantasy football

idp leagues could grow into offense linemen stats . team or individual, but im not sure how stats are kept individual in reality .

the big miss with standard ff creation imo is the team defense . make the defense woth more . a sack/int/fumbleforce/fumble recovery should all be the same as a td on offense or something of value . a top def should = a worthy % of team points . this would also add to matchup strategies with crappy def .

1. One foot in for receptions

2. College format for OT games

3. Impose weight limits on players

4. If we are gong to continue to have the NFL Europe, Arena League, etc. why can't the NFL have a minor league system lake baseball that is played after the NFL season is over?

5. Change pass interference penalties.

I'm assuming that you would want player salaries to be fully guaranteed as well?
If a player cannot play due to an injury (that is football related; during game, training, etc) then yes. If a player is suspended (for on or off the field infractions or criminal activity, or hurts himself in a contract restricted activity (i.e. Winslow) then no I don't think they should be paid.

I meant that if players should be forced to honor contracts to their entirety, then perhaps teams should be required to guarantee the full value of contracts if they choose to cut a player.

College OT system would improve both. Gives both teams an equal shot at the endzone. Give players from both sides a chance to get more stats in OT as well. This is the way to go. And I think it would do for the NFL what the shoot out did for the NHL

One mulligan play for each team per season.
As a Packer fan, VTjkru, I'm guessing you wish you had a mulligan in your pocket for Favre's overtime pass to Corey Webster. Probably wish you had one for 4th & 26 too.Somebody earlier said weight limits. I think that's intriguing. You see the average age that offensive linemen pass away, and it's startling how much shorter it is than the average American male's life. The extra weight is definitely a factor, and these guys just keep getting huger.

I'd also like to see the league put an end to the Pro-Bowl. It's pointless. Just make that weekend a skills competition between the league's best players.

Oh I wish, oh do I wish...But in halfway seriousness, it would be neat if each team was allowed one mulligan per regular season. When do you use it? What play would you run in your mulligan? Defense or offense? For a field goal? Who knows but it would be a highlight every time a team decided to use it and you know there would be teams who never would.

Allow instant replay to be used on an officials call under the same parameters as the existing instant replay.

Allow more flexibility for defenders to do their job.... reduce the amount of BS illegal hit calls.

Alter the OT format. I prefer going to something similar to the college format (imagine that, the NCAA is actually doing one thing better than the NFL!). Regardless of what you'd like to see it changed to I can't imagine you could make it worse.

Sorry but this stance bugs me. I'm ok with the first sentence... even if I don't necessarily agree it would be better, I'll call that a difference of opinion. But the second sentence really bugs me when it implies that the player is somehow not living up to the contract he signed. He signed a contract that includes the negotiated right within the CBA to hold out until week 10 and still have it count as an accrued season in the contract. The player is not breaking his contract when he holds out, he's exercising one of the options the contract gives him.

make the pro-bowl a flag football game.

it is basically flag football now, might as well stop hiding behind the pads

lower rookie salaries.
:lmao: This is ONE thing the NBA does right. Just have pre-determined salaries for each draft position, end of discussion. If I can't have that, I think I'd want Goodell removed. :lmao: He hasn't impressed me at all and I'm getting really fed up with him tinkering with the draft. First he makes a special "Aarond Rodgers room" for players falling way down the draft board, THEN he moves it up to afternoon, now he's moving it to Thursday....THURSDAY. That's F-ing madness!

I realize commercials are what drive the sport, but it's getting pretty irritating watching an nfl game.

it's pretty slow as it is with teams getting like 40 seconds in between plays.. then you have insufferable amounts of commercials, breaks, halftimes.

pretty painful to sit there on those crappy seats in an nfl stadium for 3.5 hours to watch about 20 min of actual play.

Teams can be pretty successful with a no-huddle type of offense, which would reduce the amount of "specialty" players and substitutions, and BS.

Why can't we have a 20 second play clock, cut 1/2 time in half and just add an extra timeout per half.

I want to see more football, more plays, more action...

Make the Monday after the Super Bowl a REAL national holiday. We could call it Hangover Day.

That and we will have to dredge up the whole ownership side of this where they can cut a guy for no reason and void the rest of the contract, which is also part of the CBA. But this is has been done a few times already this offseason
