Idle Rumors Thread (1 Viewer)

To me this was Boston's most glaring need, and they didn't have to give up all that much for him. As much as I love MDC, he is certainly not one of the untouchable prospects.

To add Gagne to the already MLB-leading bullpen is huge!

Red Sox acquire Gagne from Rangers Associated Press Updated: July 30, 2007, 3:28 PM ET TEXAS-- The Boston Red Sox acquired Texas Rangers closer Eric Gagne on Monday for Manny Delcarmen, minor league pitcher Craig Breslow, another player and cash. The trade bolsters the Red Sox bullpen as the team tries to hold off the New York Yankees in the AL East. Gagne, had converted 16 of 17 save opportunities. Gagne will be used as a setup man for closer Jonathan Papelbon. "We're extraordinarily happy with the job that Jon Papelbon has done as a closer," Epstein said. "We'll talk to the players before we start talking about their roles and how we think they're going to be used," Epstein said. "I'm sure we can find plenty of places for him to work." "We've been talking to the Rangers on and off for a week or two," Epstein said. "Once they made the Mark Teixeira trade , things really accelerated. ... We got down to business very quickly." Gagne was the most attractive reliever available in a trade, sought out by the Yankees, Mets and Tigers among other teams. He agreed to a $6M , one-year deal in the off-season and could have exercised his no trade rights to veto a trade to Boston. "A great opportunity came along, and I feel that I have a chance to win a World Series," Gagne said. "There's a lot of frustration going on in here right now, but hopefully then can right the ship" . Wow. Classic Yankees move, but it's the Red Sox doing it.Okajima-Gagne-Papelbon? Wow.The only problem might be that they wind up using Okajima, who's had the best season, less.

OK, this is unconfirmed...may have jumped the gun on this one. Pulled it off the SOSH forums but no one can produce a substantitive link

Gagne has twelve teams on his list that he can't block. The Yankees and Mets are two of them, Boston can be blocked. Gagne's contract has incentives in it that guarantee him 3.5 mil if he closes x-amount of games. He won't go to Boston unless Boras can get a contract done that guarantees the money to him if he is only used as a set up guy. With the New York teams there doesn't have to be a guarantee so the Rangers could move him regardless of him not being a closer there.

New York Yankees have been told Chamberlain or Hughes.

New York Mets have been told Milledge.

Boston has been told Ellsbury or Bucholz.

All of them have told Texas "Keep dreaming."

Yanks have said Hughes, Chamberlain, and Kennedy are untouchable. They are offering Ohlendorf or Clippard.

It looked like Dye for Del Carmen and Willy Mo was on the table earlier in the day, but the Sawx thought twice about it.

So this is unconfirmed? Doesn't seem to make much sense. Especially for a guy like Gagne that wants the ball in the 9th. :towelwave:
I heard the Sox just got Ryan Howard, Prince Fielder, JJ Putz, Jake Peavy and Dan Haren for Julian Tavaerez, cash, and an unnamed minor leaguer.

lol at Clippard
Almost as laughable at the garbage offered by the Sox in your post yet you seemed to believe it.
Manny DelCarmen is a much better pitcher then Clippard dude. Not so sure I would call him garbage...
Im pretty sure Red Sox fans are the only ones who value DelCarmen. To me hes nothing more than an average ML reliever.
Yes, average ML relievers throw 97 with control

Baseball prospectus on Clippard: He should eventually settle in as a back of the rotation starter , though that estimate may prove to be conservative.

on DelCarmen: 2006 season was a mixed bag...He's still young and gifted enough that the Sox aren't panicking, so expect him to retain a key role in the bullpen.

their projections gave a slight edge to DelCarmen, which given their age might reflect a bit more upside in Clippard, but clearly neither of these guys are worldbeaters.

I think the bottom line is that dealing with the Sox and the Yankees likely means getting a nice chunk of cash in return for whatever you give them. Especially with the Yankees adamantly not putting their young arms on the table.

MDC is having a good year. He sucked his last time out, which hurt his overall numbers, but they are still very impressive.

Plus, look at em...which one do you think is going to put fans in the stands? Tyler Krueger or MDC?

Yes, he's having a good season, but he doesn't dwarf a guy three years his younger. How were DelCarmen's stats 3 years ago?

Professional StatsYear Team G GS IP H R ER HR BB K W L ERA

2001 GCL 11 8 46 35 16 13 0 10 62 4 2 2.54

2002 Aug 26 24 136 124 77 62 15 56 136 7 8 4.10

2003 Sar 4 3 23 16 9 8 1 7 16 1 1 3.13

He had elbow surgery in 03, likely from pitching too many innings in 02. He was the top pitching prospect in the Sox system for awhile. The story on him is a good fastball 93-95 with the ability to hit 97, with a plus curveball. He has not gone to the curve too much this year, is still working on his confidence in it. I have seen him throw some really wicked sliders this year as well.

Bottom line is he has shown himself to be an effective MLB reliever this year, and has great peripherals. Still, I would send him to Tex in a second for Gagne, even if it means as a rental. Can't pass up the chance to add Gagne to the already ridiculous bullpen the Sox have

As long as I have the numbers handy...amongst AL relievers with 20IP, MDC ranks:

ERA - 25th (2.7)

SO/9IP - 12th (9)

BB/9IP - 16th (3.15)

WHIP - 10th (1.0)

I wouldn't necessarily call those average...

Still, he does seem to lose control / composure once in a while, so has some items to work on. That said, he has done a great job stepping in for Donnely
