IDP and KR/PR (1 Viewer)

I get points for return yards in my IDP league, and I'm looking for players with stats on both defense and on returns for week 1.

So far the only players I've found are Ellis Hobbs and Terence McGee. Anyone else I'm missing?

Ed Reed would have been a good one this week! And after that performance, he may become a regular returner (strictly my opinion there)...he made that TD return look EASY :goodposting:

Eagles return game is in flux - it's possible an IDP takes over the role.

Reno Mahe was sorely missed on Sunday.

I had Reed last week and he got me points but I'm concerned about his lack of tackles. With out that return it could have been ugly. Was this a down week or is it a sign of things to come?

I bet the tackles was just a fluke... besides that, he's just a playmaker, so I bet there will be more big plays from EReed this year

Don't think it's been mentioned, but Woodson in GB is back returning punts again this year. He finnished as the #2 DB in my league last year (in the top 3 w/Pacman & McGee).

He is only retuning punts until Will Blackmon gets his cast off. He should be returning Kicks and Punts after week 2/3.

from Rotoworld:Adam Caplan of Scout.com reports the Eagles have contacted the Raiders about return man and cornerback Chris Carr. The Raiders have inserted Johnnie Lee Higgins on punts and Carr doesn't see much action in the base or nickel defense. The Eagles recently brought back Reno Mahe, but Carr has a better track record of return production.

Who will be returning kicks and punts after week 2/3? Blackmon?
Woodson is returing punts now. Blackmon should be returing both kicks and punts afer he gets his cast off. Which should be after this week (week 2).

Does Blackmon get any PT on the defensive side? Perhaps in the nickel? I am just saying somebody that only returns punts/kickoffs but has zero production on the defensive side would only be a bye week filler at best (ala J Miller of NYJ)

Bump for updates on:

Blackmon - ready to go? How much time will he see on defense?

McGee - Wasn't listed in the Players in the News email, but KFFL says he was limited in practice and will 'probably' play on Sunday

Anybody got anything (looking at you here Herman  )?

I haven't seen anything to indicate McGee not playing.

Yeah, its not looking so good for McGee. Any word on Blackmon? He's on my league's wire, and if he's back to returning, he might be worth a shot. However, I did find this article - seems like Williams will cut into Blackmon's time even if he's ready.
Starting to see returns

Career finally kicks off for Williams

Green Bay - The search was on for a dynamic kick returner and just a couple of months ago the Green Bay Packers thought they might have found one in Will Blackmon.

So it was a serious setback when Blackmon was sidelined in training camp with a fracture at the base of his thumb.

In his place, the Packers threw in 5-feet-11 cornerback Tramon Williams, a practice squad guy a year earlier.

Williams could have just been a plug until Blackmon's return.

But so far, Williams has been way more than just a guy.

"Oh yeah, he's a lot better than that," said Green Bay special teams coordinator Mike Stock.

After getting cut by Houston last year in September and working out for nine other NFL teams, only to get rejected again and again, Williams finally found a home with the Packers. Even if he made his way at a position he never expected.

"I was talking to my mom and my girl and I said, 'If I had to guess I would be returning kicks at the start of the season, I would have never guessed that,' " Williams said. "This is definitely a surprise."

Against the New York Giants, he ripped off returns of 42 and 46 yards (which was shortened by 20 yards with a penalty). The week before, he had four returns for a total of 100 yards.

He's done so well, the Packers are going to have to decide how to keep him in the rhythm he's developed while incorporating Blackmon back into the kick return mix once Blackmon can shed the cast protecting his hand.

So far, it's been a nice problem to debate.

"I'm excited about Tramon," said Packers coach Mike McCarthy. "You have DeShawn (Wynn) back there, too, that's a nice complement. When Will Blackmon is ready, we'll also get him back there. Flexibility is important, you never have enough depth, and I'm just excited with what Tramon has done with his opportunities."

The bright spot on Williams at kick return is another example of how the Packers have upgraded their performance on special teams this season after two dismal years all around.

Stock indicated that the reason for Williams' success is that he's had better blocking, more so than Williams' own ability to cut and have optimal timing on his approach to the wedge.

"That helps a little bit when you're blocking better, yeah," said Stock. "We're doing some things that enable him to (make his own cuts). We didn't have any speed last year where we could do those things."

Lately, Williams has been secure with the ball. He learned his lesson after misplaying a ball earlier in the exhibition season against Seattle.

"He caught the ball not squared up, facing the sideline," said Stock. "When you do that, you don't have the body to block the ball in case it slides down, so the ball goes down to the ground, you muff the catch and they recover.

"Since then, knock on wood, he's been good," said Stock.

The Packers' special teams unit is playing so well, it doesn't seem overly ambitious to expect a score now and then this season. In the last five years, the Packers have had just one return for a touchdown, an 85-yard punt return by Antonio Chatman in 2005.

It'll be up to Charles Woodson to bring one home on punt returns; that job is his as long as he wants it.

Indeed, kickoff returns for a touchdown are rarer, but they can happen. New England's Ellis Hobbs already has one this year. In 2006, there were nine kickoff returns for touchdowns and in 2005, 12.

"I think the guys think they have a guy who can return the ball pretty good, so they're doing a great job of blocking," said Williams. "I think we definitely can (score this year)."

Williams was an undrafted free agent in 2006 out of Louisiana Tech, where he was a solid corner and did some kick returns. He spent training camp last year in Houston, but never worked out at returner. Waived Sept. 3, he spent every Tuesday working out for another club. And every time, his agent delivered the bad news; that is, until he was picked up Nov. 29 by the Packers and put on the practice squad.

He's viewed as an up and coming corner, also.

Packers defensive coordinator Bob Sanders said Williams played on a couple of snaps in the dime defensive package against the Eagles and did fine. Sanders said Williams was considered to be at the same level as the talented group of young defensive backs such as Jarrett Bush and Charlie Peprah.

Whether the special teams block a punt, as Brady Poppinga nearly did against the Giants, or rely on veteran Tracy White, Stock said the Packers are in better position to make the big plays.

Williams adds to that potential

After causing turnovers, giving the offense better field position to work with and pinning the opponent back, the next step for the Packers is to get a big return from the punt or kick returners.

"We're the in-between people," said Stock. "If we can make something big happen in the meantime, like a turnover, like a big kickoff return, it's an emotional lift, the sideline picks up. If you're home, the crowd picks up, if you're away, your opposing crowd gets deflated, the opposing team gets deflated. It's all about momentum.

"This is what we're about, the in-between plays that cause momentum, hopefully in our favor."
