IDP Flex Strategy (1 Viewer)

I just joined a league that has 1 IDP flex spot. I've played in plenty IDP leagues, but never a league with just 1 IDP flex. Any strategy tips for this? It's a 12 team redraft.

Also, the scoring seems a little odd to me. Sacks are 3 points, Interceptions, forced fumbles and fumble recoveries are 2 and tackles are only 1. Normally I would think go for a stud LB, but given the scoring I'm thinking I should go for an edge rusher. What round would you take an IDP player in a league like this? Would you draft more than 1? We have 21 roster spots.

If not for the injury, the obvious answer would be "JJ Watt early and don't look back."

Maybe now let someone else break the ice with Watt and draft Mack with your next pick.

I think you should take a streaming approach to this for the most part.

I have a question however in regards to tackle scoring, do you get 1 point for an assisted tackle? Or just the solo tackles? Some leagues award .5 for a tackle assist. That could change things if you get 1 point for all types of tackles.

Good defensive players do not always make the best IDP starts. You want a combination of a good defensive player. With either limited supporting cast around them. or in some cases where defense around the player helps enable that player to show up in the box score, for example Luke Kuechly and their defensive tackles. You also want an offense that is not good at possessing the ball, so that your IDP will get more snaps and opportunities to make plays.

A solid LB is still a safer floor type of play, and hopefully they splash some big plays at times as well. The higher points for splash plays, like interceptions and sacks, can still lead to higher scoring games however, so a good player with a plus match up, might be a better play at times than even a solid LB such as Bowman.

There are something like 10 IDP players that are worth a constant roster spot. Every other IDP player is below replacement level. If you have two really good IDPs I could see keeping them, but I think you would still want to consider potential high upside match ups over them.

A good match up would be against a QB who is holding the ball too long and giving up a lot of sacks, combined with a bad offensive line, and maybe a specific offensive lineman who will be outmatched by the IDP that week.

I likely would not plan to draft any unless a really good IDP is available late in the draft. Because I will likely want to be streaming IDP starts even if I have a really good one on the roster.

Damn good question. I just ran with 1 for all.
Yeah I saw you post as I was writing. I have always played where you only get .5 for an assisted tackle. This can add up quickly. Zach Thomas for example used to get insane assisted tackles. Some of the score keepers are generous.
