If Philly/Dallas play e/o in the Wild Card Round... (1 Viewer)

could also happen this year with Cardinals and Packers, and you mean wild card round, not divisional round.

Consecutive games since the merger against the same opponent (some of these may include teams who had playoff byes in between)

Colts-Broncos in '04

Jets-Raiders in '01

Eagles-Bucs in '01

Saints-Rams in '00

Pats-Fins in '97

Broncos-Raiders, Packers-Lions in '93

Bills-Oilers in '92 (you remember that one)

Chiefs-Raiders in '91

Chargers-Seahawks in '91, non-playoff variety

Browns-Oilers in '88

Broncos-Steelers in '78

In looking at it, there was a bye week in between, but still . . . wow

If the Eagles win out and Minny loses one more, Eagles get a first round bye. My green colored glasses are hoping for that one.

It's possible the Jets will play Indy and Cincinnati in weeks 16 and 17, and then Cincinnati and Indy in weeks 18 and 19.
That's some wishful thinking!
Too bad Rex Ryan doesn't share it.
Someone tell Rex Ryan the Jets aren't done yet

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on December 21, 2009 10:40 AM ET

Rex Ryan met with media after his team's latest loss like so many other Jets coaches in history, befuddled at what just happened.

His defense, statistically the best in the league, gave up a long touchdown march to lose a late fourth quarter lead for the third time all season.

In Ryan's mind, the Jets season was over: "This is tough, because we're obviously out of the playoffs," Ryan said. "We thought we had a great chance to make it to the playoffs. This is hugely disappointing."

That's probably not the message Ryan wants to send to the team since the Jets aren't, you know, out of the playoff hunt.

In fact, only four AFC teams are out of playoff contention. (The Steelers have lost to three of them in the last five weeks.) The Jets are one of eight AFC teams with six or seven losses. They need two wins and plenty of help to get in, but so do a lot of teams.

Sunday's results provided a good reminder that AFC contenders need to take care of their own business before worrying about playoff scenarios. You usually have a 7-7 record for a reason.

The Eagles and Tampa did it just a couple years ago.
That was crazy. They were both locked in to their seeds, so the regular-season game was completely meaningless.
If I'm not mistaken, if the Giants lose tonight the same thing would happen with the Eagles-Cowboys being locked into their respective seeds in week 17.
Not really, because the Philly-Dallas game would determine division winner and home field for the playoff game. The Phi-TB game referred to above they were completely locked in seeding.

Still wondering if Dallas-Philly becomes the Week 17 Sunday night game. Very likely the winner of this game is the #3 seed and hosts the loser in a rematch the following week. Winner would also dodge New Orleans until the NFC Championship game.

I believe it is also possible that the Vikings-Giants will play back-to-back games at the Metrodome if the Eagles get the bye.

Would that be boring or interesting - to have the Vikings-Giants and Packers-Cardinals both playing consecutive games at the same venue from week 17 to the wildcard game? One big difference is that, if the Packers win at home next week, it appears likely that the final game will be meaningless for them, while the Vikings-Giants could be in a dogfight both weeks.

I think the odds of it being the SNF game are very good. It should be announced either today or tomorrow (they generally announce flex schedule changes the Mon/Tues that is just under 2 weeks before)

NFL requires 12-day advance notice, except for Week 17. They won't make the call until next Monday, when they are assured of picking a game that has major playoff implications.
