It's Sam Hurd not Crayton.....just my opinion.

TO will have surgery today or tommorrow. No time table set right now. They will put in a plate to help the healing.
Did you know he was injured before he went to the lockeroom.
I didn’t really know until right at the last minute.
So plays were called for Owens when he went to the huddle?
Plays had been called normally.
Are you feeling any less ill today?
I wasn’t making light of that. I’m feeling less ill. But that was not a good set of circustamces for me last night, physically. I made a mistake that I know better. It had nothing to do with the game, it was my well being. I did somehting wrong.
So you weren’t sick of the game? It was physical illness?
You put those rain jackets on at night. You dehydrate yourself, and that’s not good for me once I got an electrolyte inbalance in my system.
Did you see a doctor.
No, I know what it is. I made a mistake. But I wasn’t taking that rain jacket off because we were winning. That shows you how warped I am.
You have’t had a WR with this broken hand like this before?
No, but I’ve played a game with 6 broken bones in my own hand. Sometimes you don’t know a bone is broken, you just think its something else. Most of these injuries when they put a plate in there it pretty much fixes it. Then its just a matter of what you can do funtionally. Once its in there its not going anywhere.
Is that the reason for his drops?
No, I wouldn’t say it. There were a lot of guys dropping balls.
Do you think he’ll play against Tenn?
Its way too early to know.
Did you think the game was sloppy?
Some of our more reliable guys were dropping balls. I don’t know if it was the conditions. Some of these gloves have surfaces where you get down in a stance on the field and they get wet … who knows? They had some problems themselves.
9 penalties?
Looking at the penalties .. and I’m not happy with any penalties, but 4 or 5 were aggression penalties. Offensive guys like Rivera trying to set the screen and Colombo trying to get his guy down on the Tyson Thompson run. I’m not happy with any penalties, but at least they’re not the sloppy false starts.
Agree with Ware’s penalty?
Don’t get me started.
What will you do if TO can’t play against Tenn?
I’ll think about it and let you know a week from today.
Crayton?
A little better. Caught a few balls. Punt returns are okay. Terrence definitely helped us with his returns.
How big was the bounce back coming off the loss.
It was important. Its difficult to explain after the first week when you spend a summer getting ready for a game that you don’t win. Its demoralizing. Then a divison opponent that beat us twice last year, the 2nd time very soundly. I was pretty much stressed out for it.
You liked what you saw?
I liked our approach to the game. Both sides of the ball had a good game plan. By and large our defense played well throughout the game. There was a point in time when the game could have turned in Washington’s favor. Late in the 3rd after the fumble. The next two sequences Roy intercepted the pass and then we drove down and scored. Had those two things not happened, we might be talking about something else here.
Roy 2 picks in 2 games.
They were both on the same play. A wheel route. A common play designed to take advantage of a zone defense, to send a 2nd guy into a zone to see if they’re picked up. Roy also covered a few down the field patterns pretty well in man to man coverage. That’s the same kind of play that Carolina threw on us to go ahead on a TD to Ricky Proehl. That’s probably why we saw it a couple of times early this season if I had to guess.
Thought process on 4th and 1.
I thought if the ball was inside the 1 we would go for it. If it was on the 2 yard line we would have gone for the FG. The first play we ran that Marion dove over the top was really the same one we ran for the TD. They play an unusual goalline D, they overshift which is a little abnormal.
Vanderjagt?
Tony told me in warmups that if the ball was at the 32 or closer we were good to go. When we were at the 31 I thought it was a good chance. I didn’t want to punt the ball from there.
Are you set at 2 kickers?
I didn’t decide I was going to use 2 kickers until the 11th hour. I was sitting in the coach’s dressing room, but I saw the elements the way they were I thought it would be a field position game and we need to make sure we’re not giving it up to them in a good spot. Then of course it didn’t rain when we started.
Did he earn anything from you?
I’m just happy for him. It was a big kick to get it to a 3 score game. It wasn’t an easy kick. But that’s the guy’s job. You should be able to make kicks. You wont make them all, but you can’t play the game being afraid of your kicker. It never works. I’m glad this was a kick that was difference maker and he made it. It helps him and everyone involved.
What’s going to happen when you only dress 1 kicker?
Well, I gotta feel like their return game on kickoffs won’t be a factor. I don’t know when I would be able to conclude that. I would like to enjoy this ….. don’t get me back on the same thing. We got two weeks here. I’m not trying to be funny, its just a pain in the ***.
What happened on the TD return?
It’s the domino thing .. this was a right return. They try to wall our players inside and then kick the rest of them out. Our two key guys stayed inside and got walled out, and they knocked two guys down. They knocked down 4 guys with 2 blocks. Jacque got knocked down by Suisham. Jacque probably would have caught him because he was very fast.
Did you miss Hoyte on that play?
No, it had nothing to do with it.
Were those guys walled inexperienced?
No, it doesn’t matter who you are that’s a fundamental deal.
How did Drew respond?
Exceptionally well prepared. Chris did a great job getting him ready from a recognition standpoint. He only threw 2 errant throws. He threw 4 plays away, which was good and isn’t always noticed by the media. He gave up 1 sack on a maximum protection 2 man pattern. That’s hard to do, but we managed to do it.
Hurd activated over Rector?
Rector’s ankle isn’t an issue as t why he was deactivated. I knew we were using Patrick and Terrence on returns. I thought we needed Hurd’s special teams coverage. I’ve never seen Hurd in a real game as a WR, but I do like the player. He’s a young up and coming kid who has a tremendous desire to play this game well. HE’s smart, big and tough. He’s less than perfect, but that playing time in the preseason sure didn’t hurt him.
Can teams take out Terry if TO isn’t there?
We can do things with Terry. He’s not a split end, so we can move him around and stuff. But I was happy to see Fasano make a few catches, that helps open up some things. When Marion finally figured out what time the game started he did okay. He was on Rocky Mountain time for a while.
Does the bye week help?
It doesn’t hurt. It’s a little deceptive, because it’s a 23 week season, and its already week 8. We’re 1/3 into it. Another month would be midseason where it might be more beneficial, but somewhere in mid-October to early November, that would be where most coaches would like it.
You have 14 straight weeks of football after this.
That’s not unusual. There used to be a time when we had 20 straight week.
Do you look at the Thanksgiving week as a 2nd bye?
No, you’re on a short week. Fortunately that game is at home, that is an advantage.
McBriar?
I think he’s doing an outstanding job right now. Outstanding. I haven’t looked at the stats, but you would havea hard time finding someone better in the league.
You got a feel for your team after 2 weeks?
Not exactly. They responded well for what I asked them to do. I specifically asked for a couple of things, and they responded. Im happy aboutt that.
How has TO working and how is he fitting in?
He’s worked hard and I think he’s fit in fine.
Do you think the injury stunts his integration?
He’s got a little work to do, but this injury won’t prevent him from running or set him back conditioning wise.
Are you still worried about WR depth?
It certainly is a concern, because I have no veteran experience there. But it’s a little less of a concern because I’ve seen some development of the kids. But you really don’t have a lot of choices now anyway. You bring in a veteran off the streets and he doesn’t know your system and he mgiht not be in shape. If it was the end of the season and things were a little more urgent, then I might do something else. But for now I’ll see what the kids can do.
This tme of the year last year Crayton was playing really well. Are you happy with him?
It’s a little early. He’s a slow starter. He can’t miss much football. He looked normal last night. He caught a ball in double covrage. Crayton doesn’t play the same position as TO, so is not a likely fill in.
If TO is out, is he in as a starter?
Not necessarily. They play different positions
Carpenter?
Played fair on ST. Okay on the nickel.
Gurode?
Playing well. Pretty good. Very happy with his progress. I’d rather not get into individual assessments.
Flozell?
He did a pretty good job.
Defensive assessemnt.
We were just fair in the first game. Last night we played pretty good. Their shifting didn’t bother us. We were prepraed for that. I credit Mike and the defnesive coaches for that. They really didn’t get into their free wheeling stuff. They scare you because they got some weapons. Portis, Cooley, Moss, Randel –el . And that OL is generally a veteran group. So you won’t get a lot of easy stops and pressure.
What are you working on this week?
I haven’t decided yet.
Rotating the backs?
It hasn’t changed. The workload I split up last night was satisfactory. I left Julius out there last night at the end of the game a little too long.
You got TT in for one game early but didn’t go back ot him later that night.
I know. When you’re up to your rear end in allagators you can’t worry about draining the swamp.
Ware?
Got put good pressure on. Greg did a very good job from the outside. Spears, Ratliff, Hatcher got involved. Even Fergie. I got to get Canty going. He’s good against the run, but I got to get him going against the pass.
You held them to without a TD?
That’s hard to do in the NFL. That’s the first thing I told the team. You got to recognize them when they do something like that. But as I told you, that game could have swung the other way with one play in that key position. They responded to it.
CBS Sportsline said Roy was the most overrated player in the game?
Is he an authority? Is that a collection of geniuses or just one guy?
Pete Prisco?
I don’t know the guy. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, that’s what makes it fun. I have some of my own players that I think are underrated. I think Roy does a good job for us,and I’m pretty sure opponents look to see where he is.
Hidden yards.
We had about 143 yards negated in penalties. I think 150 yards is worth 10 points in this league. That’s why when it was 17-10 the game was still in doubt.
