If (when) the NFL Adds Games to the Schedule... (1 Viewer)

Now before all the keyboard commandos suit up and get into attack mode....understand that I KNOW that scheduling is not a very big deal.

...but I see an opportunity here to add a little "something" to our fantasy schedules.

One reason that I set my league at 14 teams is that everyone gets to play everyone else ONE time and one time only.

The excuse of "my schedule was tougher than your schedule" when a team has to face this year's fantasy juggernaught twice and doesn't make the playoffs while someone else plays him only once and makes the playoffs...doesn't fly.

Yeah...it's not that big of a deal...but it's nice when you have one less excuse that the league whiner can use to explain why he doens't need to submit a lineup during the post-season.

So...if (when) the NFL adds games to the schedule....would you do anything "special"?

I was thinking about being a little "creative" with those added games.

My league has 14 teams...2 divisions

Four teams in each division make the playoffs.

It seems that every year we go to a tie-breaker to decide the final team in each division to make the playoffs.

It's always close.

My thought:

If we set up something whereas the added games are played against a team in your own division that is currently keeping you out of the playoffs seems like it would add a little "something" to the end of the regular season.

13 game regular season...

3 game post-season

....give those added games in between the two...a name like "crunch time" or something.

For example:

If (when) they add these games I would schedule and play out the regular 13 games as usual.

The additional games could be something different to allow teams to make a move to make the playoffs.

Schedule the game(s) after Week 13 based on the current standings.

Play the added game(s) (Weeks 14 & 15) within each division to give teams at the bottom or on the bubble a chance to make up a game or two at the end and make the playoffs.

Like...

#1 vs. #2

#3 vs. #4

...etc...

I've just always liked the idea of everyone playing each other one time during the regular season and I'm thinking that his may add something to the season.

I'm in a 14 team dynasty league (all together in same conference, not separated) which allows each team to play each other once in a 13 game regular season + 3 week playoff (wk 17 off)

Just for kicks we started discussing "what ifs" today about a possible expanded schedule.

Initial possible thought was...

1) keep it as it is now.....instead of wk 17 off, you'd now just have wk 18 & 19 off as well. Helps avoid losing top players in the playoffs with their NFL teams sitting them due to already being in the playoffs.

2) Expand the league to 16 teams to use the full NFL weeks but still keep the FF schedule where each team plays each other once. After a lengthy discussion the realization of expansion of a Dynasty League is just not very feasible and would never be agreed upon by the majority of the league.

Finally, someone came in with an idea that is so simple almost seems ridiculous it wasn't thought of earlier

3) If there are 2 games added to the NFL season than just extend our FF regular season by two games, but instead of making those two weeks head to head matchups you just make them all play weeks. Top 7 scoring teams get Wins. Bottom 7 scoring teams get losses.

I'd imagine #3 is what we'd probably end up going with if/when the time comes.

Kind of surprised that after a bunch of "tough" talk you state that 8 of 14 teams make the play-offs. Ouch. I think you could use a major overhaul of that format. Either add two teams or use the "play-all format (for 1-2 weeks) described by the previous poster. Then reduce the play-off teams to 6, with the top seed in each division getting a bye. Puts more emphasis on the regular season and doesn't water things down!

#3 would be my choice out of those you listed....but, think about my proposal...Think about it.After 13 weeks of play, your team sits 1 or 2 games out of the playoffs. If the season ended then, you would be buying a ticket home.BUT...with this system, you'd get a chance to play the team above you in the standings head-to-head and, with up to 2 additional games, could put together a run and force your way into the playoffs or at least into a tie for the last playoff spot, by knocking that team out of the playoffs and securing a spot for yourself!!And, since you beat him head-to-head, he'd have nobody to blame but himself.Same thing with the guy who gave up the division title by losing to the team who was climbing up his back all season! All he had to do was beat you...but he couldn't do it.I think that it would really add some excitement to the end of the season......almost like a mini, single elimination tournament.

As mentioned earlier we don't have individual conferences so your scenario you're proposing doesn't really fit and unnecessary. If you have a setup where each team plays each other once anyways there's no need for conferences.Right now it's:- 14 teams- 13 game regular season (each team plays each other once)- wks 14-16 = playoffs- top 6 teams make the playoffs- #1 and #2 teams get a bye week- wk 17 offIf the NFL expanded to 19 weeks it would probably be all the same as above except now:- weeks 14 and 15 would be all play and not head to head...top 7 scoring teams get the win. Bottom 7 scoring teams get the loss.- wks 16-18 = playoffs- wk 19 off

I'm fine with expanding the NFL season to 18 games. My only cause of concern is that they give each team 2 bye weeks instead of 1. Teams could have an early and late season bye. This would screw up FF. It would be a nightmare having your best player on a bye for the last week of the FF regular season or first game of the playoffs.
