If you are Dixon (1 Viewer)

Or...ya know, been waiting a long time for this day to come.

Professional athlete getting a chance to show he's got skills; that's all you can ask for is opporunity.

Doesn't matter if it comes against a scrub team like the Browns or a decent defense like the Ravens.

I'm thinking thanks a lot LeBeau and James Farrior for letting the Ravens convert a 3rd and 22 with under 4 minutes left in the 4th quarter.

I'm also thinking I played a pretty damn good game given the circumstances except for a sucker read in OT.

I'm also thinking that I was very low on the list of factors that contributed to a Steelers loss.

Kid played a hell of a game.

Kid played great under the circumstances. Steeler D had a few opportunities to close this out and they didn't. Had no answer for Ray Rice out of the backfield.

Who the hell is Dixon?
The former QB of what should have been a national championship Oregon team two years ago until he suffered an ACL injury that ended his season. I'm a USC fan, but that was a shame that that happened to that Oregon team.

Ducks still would have lost to the Beavers with Dixon.

I thought Dixon was doing a nice job until the Ravens went into a straight zone defense..then he looked befuddled.

He should be proud of himself. He played great.
Considering the circumstances, he played well. By no means did he play "great".
Depends on how you're measuring "great." Considering that he's a 3rd string QB with one NFL pass coming into this game, I think you could consider what he did as "great." He the made 3 plays that he had to make in regulation to win the game: TD pass to Holmes, rush TD on third and long himself, and he hit Mike Wallace in the hands for what should have been another TD(Webb just made a better play to keep Wallace from catching it).Yeah, he was the goat on the INT in overtime, but he played well enough in regulation for the Steelers to win.Maybe I wouldn't call it "great", but it was certainly "more than adequate to win a tough road game."

Kid played better than could have been expected of him.

I think within the context of the situation it is fair to call it "great".

 Made me awfully happy as a Steeler backer. I went into the game expecting to lose and come away with nothing. Instead, we came out with a loss and a pretty good looking future backup QB option. Something always beats nothing.

Dixon played well under the circumstances, but nobody should be rushing to the wire to claim him. He has career backup written all over him.

His release is way too low, and he's small enough as it is for an NFL QB. Take away his legs and he'd be toast.

I like him as a backup though...he showed some accuracy, and he can make plays with his legs that we haven't seen from a QB since Vick in his prime. A nice backup.

Yeah thats why I prefaced it with "considering the circumstances". In an absolute sense, it was not a "great" performance. I thought he played a "great" first half but missed some key throws in the 2nd half. Then in overtime, we all know what happened. Again, I don't blame him for the loss and I thought he did far more than anyone could have possibly expected. Just wouldn't use the word "great" I guess.........

Thanks for the dazzling analysis.6'5 is "small"? He is bigger than all but 4 or 5 starting QBs in the league.People on this board crack me up.

Did you see those chicken legs? Dude is too scrawny to hold up to an every week beating.I just double checked on NFL.com: He's listed at Height: 6-3 Weight: 209 He's taller then I thought, but I doubt the kid weighs an ounce over 200...and his release is still ridiculously low....which is the whole point of having a tall QB in the first place!

I just can't figure out why Arians didn't get him out on the edge more with rollouts or moving pockets to give him a better chance to use his legs.

Play calling in the second half was confusing to say the least.

Tyler Palko as the #2 limits the amount you can expose Dixon.Plus, I guarantee if you thought he might be successful doing this so did Reed and Lewis.Did you see the safety walked up right behind the tackle on clear passing downs? They were ready to eat Dixon's lunch if he moved the pocket and turned up field.

Like on the touchdown run?

It was a nice run and caught them at the right moment.Guarantee if that was part of the regular playcalling he would have taken more than his share of punishment.

Not suggesting they should have done it on every series of downs. But Dixon's running ability is his greatest strength at this point. Why would you not try to take more advantage of that strength?

LOL didn't that game go into OT without him?
Yup, only because the Beavers were down one Rodgers brother, Jacquizz was out that game too.

Because, in the NFL, it's a recipe to get your QB hurt and Palko was the back-up.

So you can tell he's a career backup after one start? Players don't improve they stay the same.

Maybe he doesn't throw well on the run? Just because a guy is mobile it doesn't mean that he is accurate or makes good decisions when he starts to scramble.

The fact is on the two runs Dixon did make they came against man coverage with a blitz on, which means every defender upfield had their back to Dixon when he started to scramble.

The Ravens quickly adjusted to predominantly zone coverage and walked the safety up behind the RT as a contain man.

They took the QB run away from Dixon/Arians.

If an OC runs the QB into that scheme with any regularity they are going to be hit. They couldn't afford the risk of an injury to Dixon with only Palko behind him.

Wow, I was going to let your earlier comment go but this is classic. Dixon stays healthy and they win the National Championship in 2007. The Beavers almost lost to Oregon's 5th string QB. Also, Jacquizz was a FRESHMAN in 2008 so of course he was out. Steven Jackson was out as well. No excuses for you this Thursday when the Ducks tear into the Beavers again! 65-38!!!!!!

You may be right, but in OT near midfield [HermEdwards]you play to win the game[/HermEdwards]. I recall Collinsworth saying he expected one more QB run based on how aggressive the Ravens defense was against the run (so I assume he expected it could work based on the defense the Ravens were playing). Maybe not wait until 3rd down, maybe on 2nd down fake the hand and run the bootleg with a run/pass option. And I'm not using hindsight either, I was hoping for that during the game. Dixon played very well in the first half but struggled in the 2nd half so switching from relying on his arm to relying on his legs made sense to me at that point in the game with a chance to win.But I also agree with you it was Dixon's fault they lost... the D gave up another lead.

Do QB's typically change their release point by a full foot? His greatest strength is his speed/running. A weakness is his very slender build. Fix the build....you'll ruin the speed.I'm projecting him as a career backup...I might very well be wrong.Doesn't change the fact that he's NOT replacing a young Big Ben...so whether or not "career backup" is correct doesn't matter...he is a backup for AT LEAST the next 2-3 years. I don't know about you, but I don't stash clearly flawed backups for three years in the hopes (or even the belief) that they'll one day fix their flaws and become a starter. Steeler fans should be happy...the kid clearly has some talents and should be a solid backup. Dynasty owners saw nothing to warrent stashing him for the next 2+ years.NOTE: Big Ben owners can take a different tact. If you believed in him (Dixon), you could then afford to stash him since he'll also fit the role of backup. I have Kolb stashed behind McNabb in a couple of leagues on that principle.
