if you can't be on-line for a live draft, but your wife can... (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
algorithm I have an on-line draft tomorrow night that I can't be on-line for. I will be coaching a pee-wee football game, and won't be able to make it home in time for the first few rounds min, probably will miss the whole draft.

Rather than subjecting myself to the Yahoo draft algorithm where all starters are selected prior to any backups, I am going to have my wife make my picks for me. She really knows nothing about FF, so I need a bullet-proof process for her to follow. My process is below (*with possible roster permutations in blue at each step); I'm really looking for any holes here and for any feedback. Maybe others have a similar situation that they can shed some light on.

Note: for my specific situation, I am drafting 8 out of 12, serpentine, 0.5 PPR, 17 man roster, 2 flex, 3 IDP, 6 bench. YMMV. The easiest path is to try to get Manning and Gates, as QB and TE would then be completely out of the equation for the rest of the draft - this is how I want to go.

=================

Preparation:

First of all, I pre-ranked ~200 players, based on The_U's Yahoo Algorithm. This is my back-up plan, in case my wife misses the pick, the yahoo autopick will step in and take off of the list.

Next, I am providing her with the overall rankings (based on VBD), as well as individual rankings for each position.

===============

Wife-proof algorithm for drafting:

round 1: BPA (Best player available) based on master list. Cross off players as they are taken from master list and position list.

{RB1}

round 2: If available, draft Peyton Manning (QB, Colts). If not available, draft BPA Who is not QB or TE from master list. Cross off players as they are taken from master list and position list. If Manning was selected, no QB's are to be taken the rest of the draft. Throw the QB list away.

{RB1, QB1},

{RB1, WR1},

{RB1, RB2},

Round 3: If available, draft Antonio Gates (TE, Chargers). If unavailable, count # of RB's. If = 2, draft WR. otherwise, draft best RB or WR from master list. Cross off players as they are taken from master list and position list. If Gates was selected, no TE's are to be taken the rest of the draft. Throw the TE list away.

*note: If Manning and Gates were both selected no TE's or QB's are to be selected the rest of the draft.

{RB1, QB1, TE1},

{RB1, WR1, TE1},

{RB1, RB2, TE1},

{RB1, RB2, QB1},

{RB1, RB2, WR1},

{RB1, QB1, WR1},

{RB1, WR1, WR2},

round 4: count # of WR's. if 0, draft WR. Otherwise, count # of RB's. If =2, draft best available WR. If <2, select RB.

{RB1, QB1, TE1, WR1},

{RB1, RB2, WR1, TE1},

{RB1, RB2, QB1, WR1},

{RB1, RB2, WR1, WR2}

round 5: count + of QB's. if <1, draft QB. If QB=1, count # of RB's. If =2, draft best available RB. If =>2, select WR.

{RB1, RB2, QB1, WR1, TE1},

{RB1, RB2, QB1, WR1, WR2}

round 6: count # of TE's. If =0, draft best available TE. Otherwise, draft best available WR.

{RB1, RB2, QB1, WR1, WR2, TE1}

round 7: best available WR.

( this is a start 2 WR league - make sure we have depth)

{RB1, RB2, QB1, WR1, WR2, WR3, TE1})

round 8: best available RB

{RB1, RB2, RB3, QB1, WR1, WR2, WR3, TE1})

round 9: best available IDP

{RB1, RB2, RB3, QB1, WR1, WR2, WR3, TE1, D})

round 10: best available WR:

{RB1, RB2, RB3, QB1, WR1, WR2, WR3, WR4, TE1, D})

round 11: best available RB:

{RB1, RB2, RB3, RB4, QB1, WR1, WR2, WR3, WR4, TE1, D})

round 12: if manning was drafted, best available WR. If manning was not drafted, draft best available QB:

{RB1, RB2, RB3, RB4, QB1, WR1, WR2, WR3, WR4, WR5, TE1, D},

{RB1, RB2, RB3, RB4, QB1, QB2, WR1, WR2, WR3, WR4, TE1, D})

round 13: best available WR:

{RB1, RB2, RB3, RB4, QB1, WR1, WR2, WR3, WR4, WR5, WR6, TE1, D},

{RB1, RB2, RB3, RB4, QB1, QB2, WR1, WR2, WR3, WR4, WR5, TE1, D})

round 14:best available IDP

{RB1, RB2, RB3, RB4, QB1, WR1, WR2, WR3, WR4, WR5, WR6, TE1, D, D},

{RB1, RB2, RB3, RB4, QB1, QB2, WR1, WR2, WR3, WR4, WR5, TE1, D, D})

round 15:best available IDP

{RB1, RB2, RB3, RB4, QB1, WR1, WR2, WR3, WR4, WR5, WR6, TE1, D, D, D},

{RB1, RB2, RB3, RB4, QB1, QB2, WR1, WR2, WR3, WR4, WR5, TE1, D, D, D})

round 16:best available IDP

{RB1, RB2, RB3, RB4, QB1, WR1, WR2, WR3, WR4, WR5, WR6, TE1, D, D, D, D},

{RB1, RB2, RB3, RB4, QB1, QB2, WR1, WR2, WR3, WR4, WR5, TE1, D, D, D, D})

round 17: best available K

{RB1, RB2, RB3, RB4, QB1, WR1, WR2, WR3, WR4, WR5, WR6, TE1, D, D, D, D, K},

{RB1, RB2, RB3, RB4, QB1, QB2, WR1, WR2, WR3, WR4, WR5, TE1, D, D, D, D, K})

I am very scared for you, dude. If I were you, I'd provide my cheatsheet to a trusted FF'er, highlight (in green) a few players you're willing to reach on. Then, use another color and highlight the guys you'd like to have (not must-have, but ones that you think are a bit undervalued that you're willing to grab). As long as your cheatsheet is based on your rankings, and an overall strategy is agreed upon by you and your trusted pal, I think you'd feel safer. As you said, your wife is clueless. I'd much rather just give some other FF'er my online username and password and let them draft for me. Just make sure the dude knows what the starting requirements are. Good luck. I bet there are plenty of folks here who would love to do it for you.

Wife-proof algorithm for drafting:
:football: I don't know why, but that line is really incredibly funny to me. Thank God I got my wife hooked on fantasy football. If I ever had a conflict during a draft, I could just tell her to value draft me a team and she'd know what to do. This actually might happen Sunday BTW since I'm on call during our draft. We have talked so many hours about fantasy and strategies and done mocks together that she knows which players I think are going to out perform and under perform their ADP's. I am really proud of you moleculo because you really did your homework to come up with that plan for her. I think you should get a team you like if she follows that plan. The only thing that can mess it up is if your rankings are messed up and I have enough faith from reading your posts over the years that your rankings are going to be pretty solid. I am confused by your instructions in round 5. There is no possible way you can have more than 2 RB's by then based on your instructions in rounds 1-4. So I don't understand why there is instructions for if RB=>2?? Maybe re word it or explain it to her so she understands. Also make sure she is figuring out the scenarios before she is on the clock. I'd hate for her to run out of time, while figuring out your instructions. Seems like a fool proof plan to me. Or wife proof LOL :excited: Good job on the prep and Good Luck!!!!Edit: I forgot to add, Be careful or you'll get her hooked on FF like my wife is.

I tried getting her hooked years ago. It didn't take. You are right - round 5 is jacked up. I'll fix tomorrow.

problem is I use my yahoo account for lots of stuff beyond FF - job search, banking, travel, etc...I don't really want to risk pw's floating around. Anyone that I trust who knows FF will be in my bigger $ league, which drafts next week. I don't want to give away rankings to them at this point. Tomorrow's draft is a cheapie work league - really all that is at stake here is pride, which is significant.

If it was my wife my "starting" QB for sure would be David Carr because "he's cute".

BTW, now that you've started this thread, you're obligated to post your roster after the draft. :football:

Every draft strategy thread on these boards should have a link to your plan. I like it better than a majority of the crap I've read over the last couple of months.

Wife reality check...

"I paid about as much attention to his oral instructions as he did when I told him about the book I was reading for Oprah's book club." "I should probably look at the written instructions now. "Hmm... RB... what is that? That must be the uniform color. Red and Blue! And WR must be White and Red. Hmm... He seems to like patriotic colors. I'll just draft him all the guys on the team named the Patriots and he should be happy. #1 we should take that Wes Welker guy!"

I'm sure these are nitpicky, and they have more to do with the wording than the algorithm, which looks good, but I've seen good plans go bad over misinterpreted directions.

Cross off players as they are taken from master list and position list.
I would reword this as "Cross off every player taken from...", just to make sure she understands this means cross off all players taken, not just ones she takes.
If Manning was selected, no QB's are to be taken the rest of the draft. Throw the QB list away.
I would reword this as "If we drafted Manning...." because my first interpretation was "If Manning was selected [by anyone], ...."Ditto for Gates.
round 4: count # of WR's. if 0, draft WR. Otherwise, count # of RB's. If =2, draft best available WR. If <2, select RB.
I would change the last part ("select RB") to "draft best available RB" to be consistent with how you worded all the rest of the picks. No need to give her an opportunity to draft Droughns in the 4th.And she can read all those funny symbols (>, <, >=, <=), right? :bye: Good luck. :(

this morning when I was giving her a brief rundown of the process, she said, "nah...I'm just gonna draft based on looks. Ugly people have to try harder."

Man, I hope she was kidding.

Imagine the amount trash you can talk after beating your co-workers in fantasy football with a team your wife drafted. I love it.

Agreed. A wife-proof coaching algorithm would probably be easier to come up with anyway. "If peewee #1 has played 5 minutes, insert peewee #2 on list. If peewee #1 and #2 have played, proceed directly to peewee #3. If < 6 peewees show up, cancel game and come home to cook me dinner".That's just a rough draft, of course, and might need some tweaking.

I don't know about that. If he's never won the league before, they'll all just harass him because it took his wife drafting for him to have a good team.

Will be there time for you to go through a quick 2 or 3 rounds with her before you have to go? I mean you rattling off names as if you were the other teams in the draft. It would help her get used to looking through your sheet for names, crossing them off, getting ready to listen for the next name, rinse, repeat, etc.

It seems simple and intuitive to us as veteran drafters ... but even the simple "obvious" stuff can trip up a total newbie.

That's actually an awful lot for her to track. Depending on what the time limit is between each pick and how fast the other guys are picking, I could see her having a very hard time keeping up. Heck, if I had those drafting parameters I may even have trouble keeping up.

Get Draft Dominator and set it all up for her. Tell here how you want to start off drafting, RB/RB/WR, RB/WR/WR, etc. Make sure you're set with all the projections and let her have at it.

Just have her do a couple of practice leagues with her yahoo account and a few mocks throughout the day.Seriously, this guy gets an A+ just for convincing his wife to do this. I'm trying to think what it would cost me to pull this off. Something on the order of taking the kids to every doctor and dentist appointment forever.

Now imagine that his wife wins the league.

I actually think the most embarrassing thing would be for her to outdraft him. :lmao:

If anyone has to go peewee have the assistant coach take him.

updated wife-proof algorithm:

1. select Peyton Manning, QB colts. If unavailable, select best RB or WR available from master list

2. select best RB or WR available from master list

3. select Antonio Gates, TE, Chargers. If unavailable, count # of RB's. If we have 2 RB's, draft a WR. Otherwise, draft best RB or WR from master list.

4. count # of WR's. If 0, draft WR. Otherwise, count # of RB's. If RB = 2, draft best WR from WR list. If only 1 RB, draft best RB from RB list.

5. if we did not select Peyton Manning, select best available QB from QB list. If we did select Peyton Manning, count # of RB's. If we have 1 RB, draft another RB. If we have 2 RB's, draft a WR.

6. if we did not select Antonio Gates, select best available TE from TE list. If we did draft Gates, select best available WR.

7. best WR from WR list

8. best RB from RB list

9. best defensive player from D list

10. best WR from WR list

11. best RB from RB list

12. if we did not select Peyton Manning, select best available QB from QB list. If we did select Peyton Manning, select best available WR.

13. best WR from WR list

14. best defensive player from D list

15. best defensive player from D list

16. best defensive player from D list

17. best kicker from K list.

significant change: I decided to go w/ Manning in the first, if possible. Per my VBD, he is 9th, so it really isn't that much of a reach. I decided that Manning has extra value that VBD doesn't account for in that drafting Manning means that I don't need to draft another QB. For his bye-week, I'll find a WW QB to fill in by then. I don't think any other QB is as sure of a thing to start (outside of Favre), who at the same time would never be yanked due to match-ups. Not drafting a back-up QB affords me an additional roster spot - it's almost like I have a bigger roster.

Besides - with this league, there is a pretty good chance that Henry/Bush could drop to me in the 2nd, but it is doubtful Manning would be there. In fact, I have some doubts he will be there in the first.

Well, there was one hole in this plan - the flaw is similar (same) names for different players. Steve Smith, for example. My list had Steve Smith ranked #1 overall; when she was looking for a WR in the 4th, Smith (NYG) was still available, and that's who I got.

Outside of that, she did a fantastic job, on both the draft and the eggplant parm. She would also like to add - "Those who doubt me can bite my shiny metal ###". (I think she has been watching too much Futurama)

results: (my commentary in blue)

1. (8) Brian Westbrook RB my cheat sheet actually had him @ RB3 for PPR. Manning went at 1.05.

2. (17) Travis Henry RB

3. (32) Antonio Gates TE

4. (41) Steve Smith WR oops

5. (56) Donovan McNabb QB

6. (65) Donald Driver WR

7. (80) Braylon Edwards WR

8. (89) Adrian Peterson RB the correct one, by luck. I think this is phenominal in the 8th.

9. (104) DeMeco Ryans DL

10. (113) Calvin Johnson WR

11. (128) DeShaun Foster RB

12. (137) Jason Campbell QB

13. (152) Santonio Holmes WR

14. (161) Lofa Tatupu DL

15. (176) Will Witherspoon DL

16. (185) Ray Lewis DL

17. (200) Josh Scobee K

Wow. That's better than you could have probably done. Tell the wife "NICE JOB!!!!"

Seriously, that's a pretty nice looking team. Too bad you coulda used that stud WR in 4th.

"I am going to have my wife make my picks for me. She really knows nothing about FF"

I run a league and an owner did this same thing becasue he had to go golfing.

I changed his name to "Meagan's playground" and didn't let him change it back. If you didn't already know his wife is named Meagan....Thinking about it now I should have changed it to something much worse.

We taunted him for years.
