I'm down with the pumpkin beer. (1 Viewer)

Props to Richard Christie. Seems like Pumpkin beer is a hot item in beer this year. Had one from Sam Adams and it was pretty good. Had a 4-pack of Dogfish Head Punkin' Ale and it was great. I'm a fan and this will be a nice mix with Oktoberfest beers this time of year.

It's my Faaaaaaavorite. :banned:

Very regional but if you ever run across Williamsburg Alewerks Pumpkin....get it. Outstanding.

Shipyard Pumkinhead , not a big fan
2-4 years ago this was a really great beer.... like my favorite. But they have changed the recipe over the past 1-2 years so now it's just OK. I think it had alot to do with the fact that it became a huge selling beer.

gonna have to try that dogfish head one. saw it in the local beer distributor. ive had a bunch. least favorite was smuttynose. favorite was tie between saranac and blue point

Yeah I was all excited to pick some up a couple weeks back but I still have a bunch left. Just not the same.Still love the packaging though.

My ratings of the 3 I've had this season:

1 - Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin Ale - ETA 8% ABV

2 - Dogfish Head Punkin

3 - Blue Moon Pumpkin

Not a fan of the style, really. Weyerbacher Imperial Pumpkin is the right answer here, IMO.

DFH Punkin is drinkable as well, but other than those two, the others just don't do it for me.

I know a lot of folks like Pumking, but I've just never been a fan.

Had it this weekend and it was very good. However, I also had a Opa-Opa Watermelon with a little slice of watermelon in it. Now one of my favorites!

Gross.

If there isn't a Kregg Pumpkin in the Tampa area already, there ought to be.

Pumking from Southern Tier is a good one.
The BEST one and it isn't even close.
XLook who's #4. I'd put it up against any. And it's better than Pumking. http://beeradvocate.com/lists/style/72
You also have to look at how many reviews it's had.
:goodposting: Never had anything from Williamsburg Alewerks (although I would love to try it). Of the widely distributed pumpkin beers I stand by my statement that Southern Tier's Pumpking is the best.

If it was one or 2, yes. It has almost 60. That's enough to make the top beers for the style list and enough that one or 2 reviews aren't skewing the score. Williamsburg is a small outfit...their regular beers are mediocre, their "special" beers are usually really good. This is one of those. It is definitely one of the best pumpkin beers and stands up easily to any of them, including ST.

60 is not a lot, the brewer has at least that many people in his inner circle. All I need to do is look at #6 on that list and know the list is whacked. 75 people have made the Cambridge Brewing Company's beer #6. That's got to be a high sample size of inner circle pimping that beer. It kind of sucks actually. No way is it nationwide top 10.

I would like to try the Schlafly though, can't get that in Boston.

Regardless, over 1200 people have judged the Pumking from Southern Tier and it grades as an A-. That's a damn good rating and it's a damn good beer too.
My local beer distributor is really good but unfortunately he didn't have it. As soon as I said Southern Tier he walked right towards the big bottles. He thought he had it and was bummed that he didn't.

I've never seen it in anything other than a bomber, I don't think they sell it any other way. I did have it on draft once though.

Geoff (brewer) doesn't have an inner circle. In fact, the brewery was hated for a long time and shut its doors in its previous incarnation (same owner). The regular lineup gets mediocre reviews. The pumpkin gets outstanding reviews. And if you look at the locations of the reviewers they're not local to WAW.I want to try the Schafly as well. We get some of their stuff here but not sure about that one.

I went to the best local distributor because of this thread to get some Pumking. Not only did they not have it, but they had no pumpkin ales!!! How are you guys still finding them? They said they were basically out of season at this point (mid sept-early/mid oct), and when Ive gone there to get pumpkins before, theyve had probably almost 10 different breweries pumpkin ales. This place has the best selection of beers Ive ever seen, its like a warehouse of beer, yet no pumpkin ales.My only hope might be to go to a place nearby that sells singles and mixed 6 packs to hopefully find some leftovers.

Went to a local place down here a few days ago and they still had quite a few ST Pumpkings left, along with a few others. No Dogfish though. Try Banksville Beer. They seemed like a nice place when I was up there.

Southern Tier is local here, so we'll have Pumking on the shelf probably til damn near Thanksgiving. I really don't like it, though.

Thanks for this. Been compiling my own list & like Dogfish best thus far. Prefer something more pumpkiny, less spicey. Gotta find the Chocolate Pumpkin Porter at #5.
Still trying to find what I like about it. The Blue Point seems to be a little too pumpkiny. The Dogfish Head wasn't so up front with it. I wasn't really thinking about spicyness but now that you mentioned it, my mouth is kinda spicy from the Blue Points. Interesting.
