I'm hearing a rumor: Hakeem Nicks to Carolina for J-Stew (1 Viewer)

Carolina Hustler

I don't have a link yet, but I have a few friends who work in the Panthers organization who say this is what they're hearing. I'll post more if I here anything else..

Thanks for the scoop, had offers out hat included myself giving up Randle and also own J-Stew in a few leagues.

Why would the Giants want Stewart? He has a huge contract, they're 1-6 and Brown and Wilson will be back after the Week 9 bye.

Guess its possible but seems like a stretch. I'd like to see it though.

Laugh if you want, but I think a healthy Stewart is still a top 10 RB in the NFL.

I kind of doubt this deal will happen. It seems like a typical FF wet dream rumor, but it does make some sense.

The Panthers have a pathetic WR corps and the Giants have a pretty uninspiring RB situation. Brown is chronically injured and Wilson looks more like Ryan Williams with each passing week.

I dont think the financial aspect of this works out at all. Nicks is going to want a contract paying him 6,7,8 million a year. The Panthers are not in a spot where they can pay him that especially with Greg Hardy in negotiations.

It would be interesting if it happened but I don't think the Giants have enough cap space to do it... they're paying the quarterback and the coach's son in law too much

I'm ignorant when it comes to this sort of stuff, but maybe it's just about Carolina getting rid of JStew's contract? Maybe they're content use Nicks as a rental and let him walk in the offseason. Those kind of deals do happen in other sports.

It long been believed by many that JStew is a top 10 talent at the position. I don't think anyone would laugh at that statement.

and how much extra cap are you imagining this deal would take?

because I'm not seeing any --- it's carolina that would take the big cap hit

I have friends in the packers organization. I heard from them the packers are seriously considering trading Rodgers straight up for cutler

I just don't see how any NFL team would be interested in trading for Jonathan Stewart. He's chronically hurt with lower leg/ankle/foot injuries and carries a big contract.

And any talk about him being a top 10 RB talent is a complete mirage. Yeah maybe he's top 10 in hype that was never realized, but he's not even the best RB on his own team.

Would the Giants have to take over the Stewart contract?

And they would be getting rid of Nicks because they don't want to pay him a hefty contract?

Seems contradictory if so to both.

Not to mention the Giants would then have Stewart, Brown, Wilson, Cox, Hillis, Jacobs, all on the roster. That's a bit crowded and they all have issues.

By the way there is probably no limit to the "what if" conversations that go on in and around GM offices, that's what they're paid to do. Some of these would really get people going, and I'm sure they take place, and sometimes teams may even call other teams and talk some more. But how much of either ever come to fruition because of details, cooler heads prevail, things get talked out and they just don't work.

I usually don't comment on these types of posts, but I had to here. Please enlighten me as to why you felt compelled to do this? You should know that it's really very annoying.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1815884-with-deangelo-williams-shouldering-load-panthers-must-trade-jonathan-stewart

Senior NFL.com analyst and former Dallas Cowboys vice president of player personnel Gil Brandt offered up the New York Giants as a win-win trade partnerfor Stewart. The Giants would get a desperately needed running back, while Hakeem Nicks could finally be that No. 2 receiver Carolina has long needed.
This is the only thing I can find online about this "trade"...

I'm not a cap guru and don't have the numbers on how Stewart's signing bonus is amortized, but he has a 1.5M base salary in 2014 and then around $5M a year 2015-2017 plus whatever the signing bonus is on top of it. I just don't see how those numbers work for a team that could barely afford to sign anyone for the last two years. That said I'm sure there are a lot of ways to get around it so I wouldn't rule it out.

I was a big Stewart fan for a long time and would have loved to have seen this 3 years ago.

Brandt went on to speculate on four other trades, including Gordon, Babin, Britt, Grossman.

Interesting piece in its own right but if there is where this started then... it's just that, speculation.

http://fansided.com/2013/10/15/carolina-panthers-trade-new-york-giants-wr-hakeem-nicks/3/ - "Panthers Should Trade Stewart for Nicks"

Yeah....I feel like these rumors were started by sports analysts, brainstorming where Nicks would fit in....as opposed to hard evidence from the Panthers organization....Carolina has had plenty of chances to trade Stewart, and, of all seasons, this is one where Stewart hasn't showcased anything that would look promising to another organization...I could be wrong, but I agree with SaintsInDome2006, this is most likely speculation

I cant see it happening, Stewart's contract with the Panthers is ridiculous. His 2014 & 2015 salaries are guaranteed and he is due $2M in deferred signing bonuses in 2014 & another 7M roster bonus in 2014. The Panthers would take a nearly $8M cap hit trading him and the Giants would take on a huge guaranteed contract still remaining to be paid out.

The article also states that Stewart is several weeks away and may not be ready until mid-November. Doesn't make sense because by then Brown would be back.

But for how long? He never stays healthy for long.

This is also great news for those who own Ruben Randle.

Jstew has had the perfect storm of bad luck (dwill, injuries, cam taking GL TDs) to not dominate the league consistently like he is capable of doing. Getting a fresh start on the Giants could be just what he needs to have a monster year. As for Nicks, he is a great player but with the money tied up with cruz and randle being more than capable to be the number 2 WR makes this trade a no brainer for the giants and for Carolina,

It looks like the Giants would only be on the hook for $4M if they cut him before next season. Link

Stewart's $1.5 million base salary in 2014 and $2.5 million of his $4.25 million base salary in 2015 are now fully guaranteed.
