Cat expert here. This isn't as crazy as it sounds. My mom loves cats so growing up they were always around, both inside and outside (small farm). She never paid anything for them. These cats are so hit and miss. Most were insane and just a few were awesome. A cat that doesn't freak out every few minutes is nice to have around.I'd pay good money for a cool cat.

This was my thought.

There's not $700 worth of difference between breeds of cat. Just find a shelter or rescue and pick one out.

FWIW - I just picked up a kitten at a shelter and it cost me $200 (spayed, vaccinated, microchip inserted), so you're really only throwing away $500, not $700.

I've had two and they both love/loved to fetch those little jingly cat balls. My dog doesn't even fetch.

Looking into buying a Bengal.

I have looked into adopting, but the shelters seem to want close to $200 now. That does include spay/neuter, but if I am going to pay that much for a cat, I may as well spend a little more and get what I want.

Ouch. Around here it's like $90.

Sorry, dogs I've owned don't jump up on the kitchen island and put their 9 Lives whiskers in every food dish and then trek back to the litter box. One of my biggest rants on earth. More against blind cat owners than the varmints themselves. Cat are great at catching mice. If you've got a mice problem, go for it. Or get them f'd up on catnip and watch them bounce into walls. Otherwise I don't get the allure.

Am I the only one that couldn't follow the incomprehensible rant?

Rescue is the way to go. Granted you won't get a young kitten, but you will get purebred and most won't cost you a dime. Just do a Google search on "Bengal cat rescue"

Don't buy the cat from a "pet store". Do a little resaerch and find a reputable breeder rescue. Pet store animals don't tend to be as healthy/robust as you'll find at a reputable breeder.

I have two that I've been trying to find a home for 6 months now. As of Thursday they go to the Humane Society. Son with asthma/allergies takes priority. I'm guessing that most shelters have a ton of nice cats waiting to be adopted. That's where we originally got ours. I would always recommend that over paying $700.

sNow that that is out of the way...Maine Coons are pretty awesome cats. My brother gave me their cat when they had their first child, as it was 20+ pounds and liked to sleep on people's faces (his wife thought it might smother the baby.) He is a very cool cat though, although he scares easy for how big he is. Only downside is that he's a long-hair which means a large amount of fur, we have to clip it from time to time to help him keep certain areas clean, if you know what I mean, and he can get matted up in a hurry if he doesn't get brushed regularly.

What was the outcome for the OP? Get a cat? Spend $700 or find something at a rescue? Update?

My wife and I bought a Manx kitten when we first moved into an apartment. He was a couple of hundred bucks, but turned out to be awesome. Sweet, low maintenance and would even fetch small things like milk caps and toy mice. Had him ten years before he passed. Nothing wrong with paying for a cat or whatever animal you want.

I have never owned a pet. I went to the pet store looking for a kitten for the family, and was handed a ragdoll kitten. This little guy was incredibly calm and I figured he'd be perfect. Apparently the name comes from how they go limp when you pick them up. I asked how much and was told $700. I assumed most kittens were cheap, if not free. I initially scoffed but was already pretty attached. I checked the classifieds for free kittens and there wasn't much there. Then I googled ragdoll cats and they're awesome. Calm, affectionate and not a lot of shedding. I'm definitely leaning towards buying the little dude. Anyone here ever own a ragdoll.

We,ve got a whole town full of free cats, any color, make, model, year etc. Give me $700.00 dollars and I'll grab whatever one you want. Hell i'll fill you up a bushel full.

Admittedly I was off on a few tangents. It's a hygiene thing. Just can't stand it when cat owners let Mr. Bigglesworth prance on eating surfaces and sniff everything in sight. Disgusting.

Get a rescue...i am sure you can find whatever breed you want if you are willing to take the time. Dont support the mills that breed and distribute the lse high dollar animals.

Agree with the sentiment here in getting a rescue. However, if you are intent on getting a kitten, then find a reputable breeder. Whatever you do though, do not ever buy a dog or cat from a pet store. Most of these annimals come from mills. Just google "puppy mills" and see the really bad living conditions animals have to endure to get that cute dog or cat in the pet store window.
