In Austin TX for a week - suggestions? (2 Viewers)

Heading there tomorrow for our Sales Conference.  Weekend is pretty much free as we canceled golf.  Arrive tomorrow around 3pm and fly back next Friday am.  Staying at the W downtown.  Need a spot for dinner Sat night and hopefully catch some great music somewhere.  Will watch football on Sunday after getting some BBQ here. Salivating after seeing it on Food Network

Any FBG suggestions for restaurants, bars, music, cool things to do?

Just saw that Don Henley is playing Austin City Limits Live tomorrow night at 6:30.  I have to get a ticket...On Craigslist now unless any FBG has another angle..

I expected to try Franklin's too but the line was down an additional block as in the website photo so it didn't happen.

Some people will give me grief for this, but by the time you wait in line, you could drive out to driftwood. And byob at salt lick. Get the beef ribs. Lots of fun. Easy. Not nesrly as good as Franklin's, but you'll have a blast

6th street is kind of a drunken, sleezy free-for-all on the weekends (they block it off for blocks). Rainy Street is the more indie(?) area. West 4th is a bit older and posher than either. The East Side is super hipster mixed with a pseudo-barrio. I'd recommend checking them all out if you have time to see which suits you best.

My favorite restaurant DT was a japanese place called Maiko which seemed to operate on permanent happy hour for food. If you go to Salt Lick, consider checking out the original location out in the wine country area (Driftwood).

South Congress St. has a stretch of weird, interesting places just a bit outside downtown. It's worth spending a couple hours walking around.

Mount Bonnell has the best views of the area, and it's not a tough walk to the top at all.

I always send people to Stiles Switch. Nearly as good, no wait.

Friend of a friend lives at The W.  He slays poon just hanging out at the bar and bringing them upstairs to his apartment.

This probably isn't helpful.

Is that the place where GM was talking to his food?

Just scored a ticket in the 5th row for Don Henley tonight. Good start! Show ends by 10 so plenty of time for debauchery afterwards.

Thx for the tips, guys

Take the 40 minute drive over to Taylor for BBQ at Louis Mueller's.  Next best thing to Franklin.  Beef ribs, moist brisket, and jalapeno beef sausage are the best items.  There will be a line around lunchtime but usually not more than 30 minutes or so. Used to not be much else in that little town but there is a little brewery right down the street now.

If you want to stay in Austin and can't get Franklin, La Barbecue (sister of the Mueller clan) or J. Mueller Meat Co. (black sheep brother of the Mueller clan) are your best options.  All are world class.

I'm told that there are people you can pay to wait in line for you. I think they text you when they get to the door or something like that.

Second the Rainey (spelling) St recommendation. A street walking distance from downtown that is a bunch of houses turned into bars. Was good for groups.

Or I'll meet you for the best crispy taco in the world at amayas south.
I'm seriously intrigued.  I'm from So Cal, and have been hearing claims about tacos in Austin.  A local from our office said they have the best breakfast tacos in the world.  Strong statement.  Now best crispy taco.  Better be shredded beef, as the last great taco somebody took me to had ground beef - total nonstarter.  May have to see if we can get schedules to align.  Tacos and beer on me...

This may prove more difficult than you believe.  They take pre orders 6 weeks in advance.  A quick check of their website doesn't have pre order available until Tuesday, but I hope you get some...

That is unbelievable.  Confirmed.  No pre-orders until Tuesday.  Wow.  I guess I'll stand in line.  Maybe rain will keep folks away, though my bet is that a lot of folks ordered for the Cowboys game, so they may sell out even faster.  How early would I have to get there on Sunday? I'm a life experience guy, and I love great barbecue.  I can wait.

Is your favorite hamburger made of shredded beef?

Amaya's make a very good picadillo (ground beef), but the reason they excel is that they hand-make and fry these big fat corn tortillas to order. They are similar to all the crispy tacos you ever had in your life, but several orders of magnitude better. Austin is also famous for breakfast tacos and "street" tacos, none of which have a fried shell. Amaya's does have a shredded chicken option for its crispy taco, but I much prefer the picadillo.

I'll pm you my number. I'm only five minutes away from Amaya's if you want to check it out. Where are you watching the cowboy game?

When in Rome, Cos.  Yes, please PM me.  Not sure where we are watching the game.  Others are working on that.  Staying at the W so I'm sure it'll be somewhere close to that. Suggestions?

Also, supposedly "Free Week" going on at a bunch of venues.  This is what one site recommended:

Riverboat Gamblers are always a rollicking good time live, so any opportunity to see them for free should be taken without hesitation. The show is at Barracuda on Friday, January 13, with Eastside Suicides and Dream Machines opening.

If you’re looking for a good way to blow your ears out, be sure to head to Barracuda on Saturday, January 14, as there’s a cornucopia of rock 'n' roll set to happen with Scorpion Child, Eagle Claw, OMGWTFBBQ, Megafauna, and Suckling. Such rad raucousness is the proper way to wrap Free Week.

The new JW Marriot is awesome.  I lived there for a month when it opened a year or so ago.  Go to the hotel bar and chick watch, drink.

There's a great place nearby that makes amazing hot dogs.  Go there and eat hot dogs.

What the ####, O? In town for that long and no HH? JW is also the best place for events. Drunkest I've been in years and most fun I've had was at a gala last fall down there.

Frank is the name of the hot dog place. Really good.

Second Bar + Kitchen (New American) and La Condesa (Modern Mexican) are my two favorite places to eat downtown.

Agree on Rainey Street for a chill vibe. West Sixth (J Black's, Dogwood, Star Bar, Belmont) is the place to be if you're into the trashy hot chick scene.

The bar at the W is the best hookup joint in town.

Jester King Brewery is a must. Salt Lick BBQ is effing spectacular too. Voodoo Doughnut. Late night drunken wandering to find the best live music on 6th Street. Great city -- one of my favorite in the US to visit.

I've had really dry brisket a couple times at Stiles Switch. Maybe I've just caught them on bad days. I like Black's on Guadalupe. They bring it in from Lockhart. Pretty good and heck of a lot closer.

Jester King is a great place to spend a Sunday afternoon, but it's a haul.

Will be there a few days this week but think I have work stuff every night.

In for a lunch cornhole.

I'd go to Franklin's just to say I've been, but, I'd wager there are better palaces. Never been to SA, only major city in Texas I haven't spent some time in.

My experience is that Franklin's lives up to the reputation. Flavor in the fat cap on the brisket is life changing.

What a great first night.  Henley concert was unreal. I was about 10 rows back. Tiny venue. He played songs from 4 decades for over 2 1/2 hours.

Met our group afterwards at Fado for one beer then had my first experience at the dirty 6. Man, was almost like Bourbon St only wider. Had to find 2 of our Australia guys and they were in some place with DJ's up front. The crowd made Smails that oldest dude in the club so I had to get out of their quick but the sights were pretty great.  Continued down and ended up at the dueling piano bar. Fun. Lots of bacherolette parties. Outside on 6th either lots of hookers or chicks who just wanted to dress like hookers.  We'll go for more live music the rest of the week.

The W scene was as advertised

Let me know which days. I'm in full conference mode but could get out for an hour or so maybe Wed or Thurs for lunch if close. Also can do happy hour before our team dinners. Sounds like Cos and others might be in

Franklin BBQ had a multiple hour wait so skipped it. Pre-ordering for Wednesday.

Needed some place close before the Cowboys game so walked a few blocks to Lambert's. Pretty good. All you can eat on Sunday's for $25. Brisket, jalapeño sausage and ribs were good. Had slaw and some amazing jalapeño cheddar grits as sides. I know it's not the best in Austin but for the next tier down it worked for me.

Any recommendations of best sports bar to watch the game?

Watching the Cowboy game on the big projection screen at the W.  I swear they must have a Kendall Jenner clone convention going on. Ridiculous

What'd the Henley ticket run you?

Austin doesn't have great sports bars, but I like Cover 3 on 6th and MoPac.

Pre-ordered 3 pounds of brisket, 3 lbs of pork ribs, 11 links, tray of slaw and quart of beans from Franklin's. Feast for 6 of my Sales leaders on Wednesday. Bucket list checked!
