In Brussels, Belgium. AMA (1 Viewer)

Currently on vacation in Europe and arrived in Brussels this morning. Spent the day touring the city center, having too much beer/waffles/chocolate. This city is beautiful and the food was amazing so far.

There is military everywhere carrying the biggest automatic weapons I've ever seen. Every metro stop has one of those big army trucks parked next to it. The main train station we arrived in had about 10 of them parked in front.

Anyway, at the hotel now resting our feet and I am bored. AMA. I may stop replying suddenly if hotel wifi drops or something but will try to keep up.

What's the big deal with the waffles? Aren't they just thick waffles? Do they taste different from American waffles?

No. Waffles or pomes frites.
Forget the haters, the mayo/frite sauce in the middle of the frites cone is the best thing ever IMO.

Get down on some Kasteel blond/doncker if you can find it. They had it at a lot of places when I used to work in Antwerp. It tastes amazing, and is like 11% alcohol so be somewhat careful but enjoy!

The beer is the best.  Had some Orval, Westmalle, and Rochefort today. The hotel vending machine even has good stuff like Leffe and Hoegarden.

Bringing home some bottles of Westvleteren 12 which is considered by many to be the best beer in the world. can't believe it's available for sale.

Women, how hot? Please provide pics.
Women are ok so far. There really are a lot of Muslims here so you get a lot of princess jasmine types which is nice. It's also 48 degrees out so everyone is covered up.

Paris was much better. I did thwart a hot pickpocketer in the Paris metro tho.

Very different from American waffles. They are coated with melted sugar and they use a yeast dough. It's more of a pastry and delicious.

Stella is everywhere especially in tourist zones.

Since someone brought up Trump,  I've been here 5 days and about a half dozen people when finding out I'm American has made a comment on the order of "he's not really going to be your president, right?"

I'll maybe get a pic tomorrow but the vending machine in the hotel has 4 brands of beer, Johnny Walker Red Label, and condoms.

Did you creep anyone out by hanging around the Manneken Pis just a little too long?

Mannekin Pis is like the Mona Lisa in that it's pretty underwhelming in person. I did not take one of those horrible tourist photos pretending to have him pee in my mouth.

How's the general vibe? Are people just going about their day or are they seemingly on edge?

Do people seem happy or somewhat down in light of recent events?

Tourism lighter than usual? Deals?

People don't seem on edge but the atmosphere is really quiet. Tourist areas were really light on crowds during the day until 5 pm or so when it spiked, but still nowhere near what I remember. We went to a popular pub here in city center and I remember it being incredibly crowded last time I was there and today there was maybe 10 people in there.  We are not using the metro here in Brussels but it seemed like people are just going about business. Traffic around 5 pm looked awful too.

We got a great "club level" upgrade on the hotel which was nice.

Why go to Brussels? What's there to see or do?
I am of Belgian descent and most of my extended family lives in the area around Brussels so that's my main reason. It's pretty light in terms of "things to do" though. More time to have the great beer though I guess.

Also not joking, the food here is better than Paris, IMO. Waffles, frites, beer, stews made with beer, etc. it's a very underrated cuisine.

I was reading this quickly and read it as "beer stews made with beer." It sounded intriguing... :banned:
