The beer is the best.  Had some Orval, Westmalle, and Rochefort today. The hotel vending machine even has good stuff like Leffe and Hoegarden.

Bringing home some bottles of Westvleteren 12 which is considered by many to be the best beer in the world. can't believe it's available for sale.
Westy 12 is awesome, a Belgium co-worker brought 4 back to the states several years ago.  I drank one gave one to my brother-in law and kept the other two for a special day (daughter's wedding maybe).  When I traveled to Belgium for work about 9 years ago they had this whole process you had to go through to get the beer so I did not make an attempt to get any, is it now available at stores in Belgium?

When I visited, my Belgium counterpart took me to Brugge, we went to eat dinner and I told him I wanted to try as many different beers as possible,he asked me which one are you trying first, I saw a Kriek I wanted to try and he informed me that he would not allow me to order it, he told me everyone in the restaurant will think I'm gay (NTTIAWWT).  So I ordered a Westmalle Tripel, and a stew made with Westmalle.

Enjoy your trip, and the many beers.

I am of Belgian descent and most of my extended family lives in the area around Brussels so that's my main reason. It's pretty light in terms of "things to do" though. More time to have the great beer though I guess.

Also not joking, the food here is better than Paris, IMO. Waffles, frites, beer, stews made with beer, etc. it's a very underrated cuisine.

I studied at Universite Catholique de Louvain which is about 45 minutes outside of Brussels and we (the other exchange students and I) never spent much/any time in Brussels.  It's an EU government city, and saying that the food is better than Paris is asinine.

They have beer vending machines??!! I guess I'm going moving to Belgium.
Fixed that for you... ;)

How's your family doing?
If recent events are affecting them at all, they did a good job hiding it from us. Spent a great day with them at Maredsous Abbey, Dinant, and Namur today.

By chance, we drove past the maelbeek metro station on the way back to the hotel. Tons of flowers and candles on the ground gave it away. Very sad.

I was taken aback to see a crate of it at the beer store we wandered into in Brussels centre. I bought some thinking there was a greater than zero chance of it being empty w12 bottles filled with dishwater, but my cousin assured me that stores do get it on occasion. the process to get it otherwise is still insane.

Enjoyed the update from Brussels...thanks!

I went to middle/high school there at the International School of Brussels from 1978 - 1982, and then worked there off of Ave. Louise from 1987 - 1990.  Live in Rhode St. Genese during school years, and near Port de Namur during work years.

Brussels was a great place to live back then.  There were a few "Pakies" (from Pakistan) to watch out for back then, but now it's a totally different scene.

My wife and I will be heading to Czech Republic this Summer for a wedding, but opted to spend the earlier part of the trip cruising around Ireland than Europe...

Be safe and enjoy Brussels!

Saw a very underrated movie called En Brudge(spelling?)-Colin Ferrell.  City looked really cool.  Bruge that is, I think.

Do you see some people who are fighting with guns or bombs?
I don't know what this is a reference to and I've way too many beers tonight tob figure it out. Right now if eellike I could live in this beautiful country. Did not realize how much I missed my extended family here.
