In the Hospital for Super Bowl weekend - AMA (1 Viewer)

I have mentioned some inflammatory issues (psoriasis) in other threads, but turns out things were MUCH worse than I had any clue of.

On Wednesday I started having some stomach issues, thinking it was from the oral steroid I was taking for the psoriasis. But even 24-48 hours after stopping taking the steroid, I was having pain in my abdomen and it started radiating to my right side and back.

Yesterday I ended up going to the local Urgent Care and they recommended I get an ultrasound, but nothing was going to be open over the weekend... so, sensing something bad was going on, I came to the ER. Fortunately they saw me pretty much right away, got me a CT scan, bloodwork and sampled my urine.

And the verdict is..... pancreatitis. Yup, another auto-immune / inflammatory issue.

So I've been laid up in the hospital since yesterday and probably won't be discharged until tomorrow. I haven't had anything to eat (and only sips of water with medication), but because I haven't needed any pain meds yet today, they're upgrading me to a clear liquid diet (Jell-O, popsicles, water) for lunch and then probably a full dinner if I don't experience any pain from digestion.

And curiously, this is the second time I've spent SB weekend in a hospital bed. 21 years ago (for NippleGate), I was on a morphine drip in a San Diego-area hospital after surviving a brutal 1-car accident. Long story there.

So yeah - pepper me with questions, and of course schtick is highly encouraged.

Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction"

Get well!

Is this going to require significant dietary changes? My son's friend had it and I seems to recall there were lifestyle modifications to be made.

Yeah I've done some Googling and I'll probably need to - at minimum - clean things up significantly. Maybe a full-on "anti-inflammatory" diet, but hoping it doesn't have to be that extreme.

The doctors have said that I do have a "mild" case.

Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction"oh yes
LOL, oh yeah, forgot all about that. One of the few halftime shows I did watch .

I hope they at least have a TV in your room so you can watch the game .
Yeah got a TV w/ sound right at my bed so I'll be watching here in a few hours.

My wife has chronic pancreatitis, which basically means she is at risk for flare-ups and they don’t really know why. She had her gallbladder removed in 2008 so she has a history of intestinal issues.

Her first hospitalization in 2019 was scary. She called me while I was at work and sounded as out of it as she was when she had a reaction to the epidural when giving birth to our son. She was in so much abdominal pain that she passed out. She was taken by ambulance to the ER and her labs indicated pancreatitis.

She went in the hospital on a Wednesday and came out on a Saturday, and only then because we lobbied for it so that we could make my mom’s 75th birthday celebration on Cape Cod. Her return to real food was much more gradual than the plan you described.

She has been back to the hospital for pancreatitis twice, none since 2022. She has gotten good at sensing when things are starting to go awry and adjusting her diet accordingly.

She had to change her diet to eliminate as much fat as possible. She does occasionally eat fatty foods but knows she can’t do it often.

Good luck and don’t hesitate to DM me for advice if you need any.

the moment that stole America's collective virginity. we have never recovered from that tragic assault on our moral standards.

RIP in peace American exceptionalism

I'm no stranger to autoimmune/inflammatory maladies, and I've dealt with moderate to severe psoriasis twice, in 2007 and again in 2019.

I'm not a doctor, and I'm not one to suggest doing your own research, but I went down some rabbit holes in 2019 before going back to the doc for a drug cure (I read all the warning labels on Soriatane back in 2007, and remembered how scary they were) and long story short, I achieved some pretty good results with extended water fasting (psoriasis is basically gone, except for an occasional small stray patch on my elbow.

There are a lot of quacks out there on the topic, but Peter Attia has published a lot of content on the topic. He used to be pretty dedicated to his fasting routines, but nowadays he does it much less, so you'll get a pretty balanced treatment from him (one hopes).

I wouldn't even mention this, but for the luck I had with it treating my psoriasis.

Sorry to hear that GB, I hope you recover quickly!

Welp, looks like I've improved quite a bit and finally off the liquid diet. Two days' worth of broth, jello, popsicles, juices and tea has me going crazy. I finally get to eat a "normal" lunch here in a couple of hours, and if there are no negative effects after that I'm going home. Hospitals are absolutely terrible. The "roommate" I had on Saturday/Saturday night left on Sunday late morning, and I ended up getting another guy in the room later last night. For those of you that know the Jerky Boys, this guy is a living, walking Sol Rosenberg. "SHOULD I BRING MY SHOES? SO I HAVE THEM?" I feel sorry for the nurses and anyone that has to interact with him. And actually, I feel sorry for HIM too. God, getting old is a drag.

I usually try to start my diets rights after Super Bowl weekend, but this is next level. Hope everything goes well and you have a quick recovery.

I wish I had seen this earlier. I'm currently in the hospital with autoimmune issues again. I've been here since Thursday, going home tomorrow hopefully. I had Colitis back in 2020, took my colon out and have had a few other surgeries and setbacks since, but yeah the clear diet is gross. It's not bad on the first day, but by day two I just want to punch that popsicle in the face.

Your popsicles have faces ?

Somehow I missed this thread until now. That totally sucks and I’m happy that you seem to be improving. I ended up having a medical scare late last week that involved me going to the emergency room. I have some follow ups to do with my physician—but I agree with you about getting old and hospitals both sucking. Positive healing vibes your way GB.

Dilaudid is a hell of a drug.

Hope you are doing better :-):-)
