Indefinite Las Vegas Raiders thread - ☠ Mork and Brady searching for a wet paper bag to see if Pete Carroll can still coach his way out of one ☠ (2 Viewers)

The only thing that gives me hope about Brady is that how he evolved from an end of draft pick to a successful QB to an old successful QB. Hope he is still putting in the hard work of years previous and we get a Ozzie Newsome type rather than an elway
Is Brady really "putting in the hard work?" He is working as an tv commentator. How much time is he devoting to that as opposed to time devoted to the the team? This feels like another :tfp: waiting to happen.
IDK but the broadcast job cuts both ways. Even if he isn't allowed in production meetings he still has plenty of access to the inner workings of other teams. He is scheduled to work the Lions games for as long as they are in it. You think he won't have opportunity to speak privately with Glenn and Johnson? That's a lot more direct contact than any other team will have.
As an owner, Brady cannot

  • be in another team's facility
  • witness practice
  • attend broadcast production meetings, either in person or virtually
So I don’t know that he has that much of an advantage in this respect. He’s really not supposed to, I don’t think. Obviously rules are made to be broken and people often do things they shouldn’t , but I doubt Fox would want to run afoul of the nfl and it probably wouldn’t be hard to prove if a team wants to cry tampering

If the Steelers fire Tomlin…
In what universe will Pittsburgh fire Tomlin when he's never had a losing season in his entire tenure, just got double digit wins in a season they were supposedly going to struggle mightily in, and also took the Steelers to the playoffs.....again?

Tomlin will leave when he wants to. No sooner.
You're probably correct. That's how the Rooney's operate.

But ending the season with five consecutive losses, five one-and-done playoff exits and eight seasons since their last playoff win leaves the door open for a "mutual parting of ways" IMO.

With each season Tomlin is looking more and more like Marvin Lewis. More "perfectly adequate" than "next level coach."

Rooney seemed tired of this pattern after last years early playoff exit. I doubt his position has improved.

No. Tomlin hasn’t lead the Steelers to anything but wins over bad teams to start seasons in years. LV needs a fresh start.
he takes bad teams to the playoffs, the guy is doing something right
If the goal is to squeak into the playoffs and lose immediately, Tomlin is your guy. I want the Raiders to win a SB.

Are you saying you can identify which available coaches will win future Super Bowls (if any)? If so, by all means, the Raiders should hire one of them instead of someone else.

Can you imagine how different this season would have gone if the Raiders had pulled the trigger and acquired Washington’s pick?
Daniels paired with Adam’s and Meyers would have been fun.

Tomlin has not shown in the last decade that he is a good but not great coach. He would be the best coach LV has had in a very long time but I want more than just a winning record in the regular season. Tomlin hasn’t shown the ability to innovate or game plan. The Steelers go into every game with the same plan and it looked like the Steelers players knew Saturday night that they had no chance with that game plan and just wanted to get the loss over with. Pickens remark after the game was very telling. Some of you fans seem happy just to win a few more games and not be a perpetual bottom feeder. There isn’t anything wrong with that but I want more.

Gotta walk before you can run.
We’ve barely crawled the past 2 decades.

Not sure why McCarthy gets such a bad rap. Dude knows how to develop a QB and he has a career 61% winning percentage. He's an immediate and massive upgrade over any coach the Raiders have had since Gruden 1.0

Can't really argue with that. Maybe my immediate reaction to McCarthy has more to do with Jerry Jones than it does McCarthy himself

I dont see a lot of support for Ben Johnson in this thread , did i miss something? He seems like an amazing young football mind . I like the idea that he would get to hire the GM he wants ,if hired .

I think he's got a ton of support, I think the prevailing thought is (was?) that we had no shot to land him since he's such a hot name - why would he come to a clown show like we are firing guy after guy after guy before their 2nd season is complete? Call it a defense mechanism, we're just keeping quiet so when we get our hearts stomped out again we'll be somewhat shielded.

But if we can shock the world and land the hottest name out there I think you'll see a ton of celebrating going on. I'll believe it when I see it, but at least there seems to be an inkling that it could happen.

This and more. If every one of the best coaches in the nfl came to the raiders they’re still a .500 team. The qb room is a joke. Run game is awful. Can scheme fix it, or is it a personnel issue? Oline same. Receivers are half way decent. The D was ravaged by injury, so it’s hard to tell how good/bad they actually are. Depth is key. There’s a ton of salary space, so we’ll see. Sure would be nice to have some stability and a product that was watchable.

I might be the only one here who thinks Ben Johnson will be the next coach of the Raiders. Tom Brady got more involved and was probably the driving force behind the GM being fired. They will almost certainly let Johnson have a lot of say in who the new GM will be. When talking about his approach, Brady used the word "collaborative" which ironically is how the Lions built their front office. If Brady is more involved, then Mark Davis will be less inclined to do dumb ****.

I think a long leash and a lot of dollars gets it done.

Gruden would have had a long leash. I think Mark is pretty hands off, but he listens to the wrong people, like when Reggie McKenzie was hired because he was listening to John Madden at the time.

color me "cautiously pessimistic" in regard to us landing THE top Head Coaching candidate.
If we somehow pull it off, then the Brady influence on the Raiders is already a big positive.

So if I am interpreting the rule correctly, if Patrick Graham gets hired as a Head Coach, Raiders won't get the two 3rd rd comp picks because his contract has expired - or has it?

I'm not sure about that last part of that statement. If the contract expired after the final game, then yeah, Raiders won't get squat if the Jags or another team picks Graham to be their new HC. What I'm not sure about is whether the contract runs through the end of the league year in March - if the contract remains in place until then, we should all be cheering bigtime for someone, anyone (in the NFL) to make Graham their coach - if so and the contract hasn't actually yet expired, the Raiders would get not one, but two 3rd round picks over 2026-27 draft. Huge, obviously.

We would get them in 2025 and 2026. Player comp picks take a year, JC-2A do not.

I don't think he's a serious candidate this cycle is he? It would be so Raider to get a minority coach hired as a HC and not get the comp picks for it.

The only candidate that makes sense is Brian Flores. I mean, look at what he did in Miami. And he could do the same thing in Vegas. I'll even go on the record and say that Brian Flores will be the next Raiders coach.

You should check out the critical comments Ryan Fitzpatrick made about Flores recently. If you take them at face value, they are quite negative about Flores losing the team in Miami. I don't know if taking them at face value is appropriate, but I'm sure whatever happened is known around the league, so that could hurt his chances at another HC job, at least until more time passes.

What did he do in Miami?

Not sure I want another surly former Belichick coordinator.

That's pretty good, but no playoff appearances and he alomst derailed Tua's career with his handling of him. He has done a great job with Minnesota's defense and he certainly could have learned and gotten better from that experience, but I wouldn't say he did a great job in Miami and I wouldn't put him at the top of the list of available HC candidates.

Tua was also very critical of Flores, saying something like the difference between Flores leadership and McDaniel is night and day (degrading vs supportive)

Ok, so not serious.

Yes, I know this is rich coming from a Raiders homer, but it had to be done.

Or the opposite logic could have a not-so-serious team hitch themselves to a not-so-serious candidate! Of course, though, as you stated... Watch it happen and then the Raiders not get squat b/c the contract already ended, lol.

Seriously, though. I do like Graham and hope someone gives him a fair shake at an HC job. And if so, that his contract is still intact until the end of the league year!

I read today that the Bengals DC job is down to Graham and Al Golden from Notre Dame which would lead me to believe Graham's contract has expired.

I think even if it's not LVR would allow him to interview if he asked. Davis may be a dork but he's not a megalomaniac like Jerruh

NEWS: NFL insider Ian Rapoport just said that current Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is “Heading in the direction of being the Raiders next head coach.”

Yeah, lots of people now reporting this one.

Honestly, I find it hard to believe, mostly because we don't get to have nice things.

This. I’ll believe it when I see it but this seems too good to be true that the top head coaching candidate (imho) would chose this sorry franchise. If this happens, the Brady mojo and involvement is a REAL thing and an asset to this team. (I hope)
