Indefinite Las Vegas Raiders thread - ☠ Mork and Brady searching for a wet paper bag to see if Pete Carroll can still coach his way out of one ☠ (4 Viewers)

NEWS: NFL insider Ian Rapoport just said that current Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is “Heading in the direction of being the Raiders next head coach.”
Yeah, lots of people now reporting this one.

Honestly, I find it hard to believe, mostly because we don't get to have nice things.
This. I’ll believe it when I see it but this seems too good to be true that the top head coaching candidate (imho) would chose this sorry franchise. If this happens, the Brady mojo and involvement is a REAL thing and an asset to this team. (I hope)
The thing to remember about Johnson is he is coming from what was arguably (literally?) the worst franchise in football.

He might look forward to the opportunity to do it again. Besides, only bad teams are looking for new head coaches.

If the Steelers fire Tomlin…
In what universe will Pittsburgh fire Tomlin when he's never had a losing season in his entire tenure, just got double digit wins in a season they were supposedly going to struggle mightily in, and also took the Steelers to the playoffs.....again?

Tomlin will leave when he wants to. No sooner.
You're probably correct. That's how the Rooney's operate.

But ending the season with five consecutive losses, five one-and-done playoff exits and eight seasons since their last playoff win leaves the door open for a "mutual parting of ways" IMO.

With each season Tomlin is looking more and more like Marvin Lewis. More "perfectly adequate" than "next level coach."

Rooney seemed tired of this pattern after last years early playoff exit. I doubt his position has improved.
Is he the GM? No one is winning without a good QB. I didn’t think the Steelers would make the playoffs with their QB situation. The Steelers front office needs to take this L.

Ben Johnson with the assistant GM of Detroit, or Joe Brady and the assistant GM of Detroti or any assistant GM in the AFC Forget Sheduer, get stud DT or LT at #5 in the draft, draft a QB later in it, and build a team that is Steelers West.

Okay, but maybe we can take it back to the Tomlin thread.

Just go away. You are typing all that for yourself. None of us are reading it.
I think it’s hysterical. And true. The raiders organization sucks and somehow has fans based on the winning teams of 40 years ago. There were a couple of good years in there but the last two decades have been pitiful.

The only reason a SF fan would care about the Raiders is an effort to try to feel better about themselves. They can say that at least their team is better than a bottom-feeder rather than compare their team to a playoff team. Remember, SF last won a SB 30 years ago!

SF fans are probably pretty bummed the Eagles continue to roll while new, young teams such as Washington and Detroit have passed them by. Even the Rams look impressive with the DC killing it. The 49ers did build a good team but their SB window has closed. It’s a tough pill to swallow.

From what I saw, the offensive game plan was not the issue, it was Goff throwing picks deep into the end zone and a pick 6.

Still, it may slow the Ben Johnson train a little.

To me this is what makes Johnson even more appealing. What was the weak link on the Lions offense? To me, it was the QB. Imagine what Johnson could do with an elite one. If he can make lemonade with Goff, he can make it with O'Connell.*

*I'm an O'Connell backer but this is in no way implying that the Raiders QB room does not need improving.

I meant to write this after the Raiders hire Johnson but I decided to ask it now: To those who wanted to see Pierce at least get a chance to start the 2025 season, how many of you are sorry Davis canned him now?
This is like that Mad Men bit where an American Airlines jet crashes into Jamaica Bay. Everybody but Draper wants to dump Mohawk for a shot at American--not a guarantee they'll land the account but just to be in the running.
It probably went something like this at Raiders HQ:
Davis: Tom, I'm going to bring back Antonio for 2025.
Brady: I think I can get us an interview with Ben Johnson.
Davis: I'll tell our soon to be former head coach I want to see him right away.

I would say that's a dumb way to run a business. But not surprised by any idiocy from Mork these days. If you have the right coach, you don't dump him for anyone. If you have the wrong coach, you dump him regardless of who you think you can get or who you can't. Making a change after year 1 when you may or may not get an upgrade? That's idiotic. Bad process is bad process even if a fortunate turn of events results.

Trying to answer your first hypothetical is silly also. First, Ben Johnson hasn't happened yet. Second, it's acting on hindsight. Is your next question who regrets drafting JaMarcus over Calvin Johnson?

Spoken like a true Pierce apologist. I would have expected nothing less from you. Good work!

Seeing the Commanders quick turnaround gives me hope for the Raiders. Would be great if Davis wasn’t the majority owner but him deferring to Brady… I’d like to give that a try.
I said exactly this in the Wash/Det game thread. Gives me hope. They were a FOUR win team last year. Just amazing.

Of course, I don’t think there’s a Jaylen Daniels type difference maker available to us but still…it’s the offseason and this is when dreams are made.

Raiders have been winning March every year since 83. All we have had, minus a few years, has been the off season hope:

Has nothing to do with Pierce. I was never all that high on him, and mostly didn't want them to fire him yet because we just keep looking like clowns every time we do it. If Ben Johnson goes 3-14 next year while breaking in a new QB are you gonna want to fire him again? Sounds like a great plan. Good work!

So where do you stand? You said if you have the right coach you keep him and if you have the wrong coach then dump him, but then say to keep Pierce just for the sake of not making a change. The clown move was hiring Pierce for the full time job in the first place.

Those two aren't mutually exclusive. One year isn't long enough to be sure you have the wrong guy, especially after his successful interim debut. It's not at all realistic to expect instant success in this league. Dan Campbell went 3-13 his first year, I think he's doing ok and I'm quite sure DET is pretty happy and they didn't fire him to chase the hot alternative hires that year (a list that includes Josh McDaniel and Nathaniel Hackett).

I don't think he got fired mainly because of the team's record. The team was not well prepared every week, he hired a terrible OC and he made some awful in game decisions. Being that I didn't think he should have gotten the job to begin with and showed me nothing to think I was wrong in that assessment that was enough for me to support the firing.

Goff is a good qb. He had a bad game especially after he got his bell rung. AOC is a mediocre back up.

Yeah like I said I wasn't enamored with him either. The OC was a big miss but he also did get the rug pulled out from under him when KK had an agreement and later backed out, who knows how many people he could have had conversations with had he known that wasn't happening. But short of a ****show like Hackett was I think you have to give the guy more than one year at it.

I was also highly concerned that our repeated hire/fire/clown thing meant we wouldn't be able to attract quality candidates - I've been recruited by a few companies I've declined to even talk to based on knowing the people that I'd be working with/for - but if we're getting serious consideration from Ben maybe I judged this wrong? Maybe enough money and/or the word of Brady carries more weight that I thought it would?

I'm a Lions fan and a huge Ben Johnson fan. The game plan yesterday was terrible. Gibbs has been so dominant and should have had 25-30 touches. It was the same thing as the Tampa game. We threw 55 times in a close game. We abandoned the run when Gibbs was shredding the Washington defense. He also got too cute with the Jamo pass.

That being said, yesterday was a rare occurrence. His game plans and play calling overall are elite. It just wasn't yesterday.

I thought the same thing. Not only has Gibbs been dominant, he was in rare dominance form yesterday - they absolutely couldn't touch him. The pass by Jamieson was idiotic and shouldn't have been called but dollars to donuts Williams has been coached to eat it and just run for whatever he can get/lose if the guy isn't wide open but that guy's about as smart as a bag of hammers and just tossed it up. I especially loved at the end of the game when they were in emergency hurry-up mode how he casually jogged back to the line from 50 yards downfield.

The Athletic’s Tashan Reed writes that former Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is “believed to be” the “backup option at head coach” for the Raiders.

The Raiders have bet big on their chances of getting Ben Johnson, with an interview with former Lions executive Lance Newmark the latest sign that they are hoping to create a coalition around what Johnson wants. It appears the Ben Johnson silly season will come to a close soon with the Bears and Jaguars also circling. However, Reed writes that the big question that remains is “whether Johnson would take the job,” as the Raiders lack talent compared to the other two squads, especially at quarterback. Carroll would be a strong rebound hire despite his advanced age. He had a strong 14-year run with the Seahawks and would likely bring some semblance of stability to an organization that has had trouble instilling that.

Unless the Brady magnetism is that strong, I don’t see why anyone would choose the Raiders of the Bears especially (since they already have their QB) and Jags for a similar reason. We’re a Table Scraps Franchise: take what’s left after all the other teams are done.

I sure hope I’m wrong.

The Bears and Jags have GMs that should have been fired. I don't see Ben Johnson taking either of those jobs with those GMs in place.

Sleeper report Ben Johnson and the Bears are finalizing a deal 😢
Like I said. :(

Sad that I was right but I’d take Caleb Williams/Swift/DJMoore/Allen/Odzune over our collection of meh as well

Ben Johnson was never going to the Raiders. The other job openings were superior. Time for the Raiders to settle for a recycled HC for a year or two before we do it again.

Kliff Kingsbury is the betting favorite IMO.

Personally I would be happy with McCarthy.

Maybe he will, but why would Kliff leave the best young QB after 1 year for a QB-less job? Maybe the $ is better and Brady/Brock have some appeal, but I don't see it.

Agree. Plus there might be a bad taste in Kinsbury’s mouth because Davis didn’t want to give him a standard contract. I think the Raider job is arguably the least appealing opening left. No QB, very slim skill players (Bowers and Meyers). Who else? Implusive owner with zero track record of experience.

He's got a good connection with Tom Brady apparently.

My fandom for the nfl is waning.
It is very difficult to watch when your team is out of the playoffs by October. I don’t know if the worst part of the games this past weekend was the refs handing KC another W or Jalen Carter becoming the best DT in the league while our pick can’t crack the starting lineup.

My fandom for the nfl is waning.
Honestly, I still love football. Love these great playoff weekends. Love playing fantasy football.

I try to make my fandom more about the individual players I like, regardless of team, and the game overall. And less and less about the Raiders.

Only way to stay sane.

I think the next best option is Pete Carroll. At least he brings immediate credibility and positivity. I say next best option based on the other names that have been connected to the Raiders.....Saleh, Vance Joseph, Spagnuolo, Rivera......please God not one of them.
