Indefinite Las Vegas Raiders thread - ☠ Mork and Brady searching for a wet paper bag to see if Pete Carroll can still coach his way out of one ☠ (12 Viewers)

My fandom for the nfl is waning.
I have a very similar experience. I will watch a good match or half of the Sunday / Monday games. But feel no compulsion to watch a match of garbage teams.

I also have admit I feel nothing but spite for Mork the dork. I find myself rooting against the team I grew up loving.

The Bears and Jags have GMs that should have been fired. I don't see Ben Johnson taking either of those jobs with those GMs in place.
It looks like I'm wrong.
Ben Johnson was never going to the Raiders. The other job openings were superior. Time for the Raiders to settle for a recycled HC for a year or two before we do it again.
Kliff Kingsbury is the betting favorite IMO.

Personally I would be happy with McCarthy.
Maybe he will, but why would Kliff leave the best young QB after 1 year for a QB-less job? Maybe the $ is better and Brady/Brock have some appeal, but I don't see it.
He's got a good connection with Tom Brady apparently.
Brady already has an L, losing out on Ben Johnson. Maybe even the greatness of Tom Brady can’t overcome Mork’s reputation.

To be fair; choosing between Caleb, Rome, Keenan & DJ over... Bowers?

No brainer, right?

Pete Carroll and John Spytek are reportedly the leading candidates for the Las Vegas Raiders' head coach and general manager positions, according to Vic Tafur and Tashan Reed of The Athletic. Notably, Spytek was part of the front office that facilitated Tom Brady's move to Tampa Bay in 2020 and was also his college teammate at the University of Michigan, indicating a strong familiarity between the two. Although Pete Carroll will turn 74 next month, his impressive resume, which includes a Super Bowl XLVIII championship, suggests that he is well-equipped to take on the head coach role once again.

I like it.

IMO the Raiders may have dodged a bullet. Ben Johnson has never been anything more than an OC . He`s never been a HC and lacks the experience the Raiders need . Yes BJ is obviously a pretty good OC but would the players have responded to him? Could he actually lead an entire team ?

I think Pete Carroll may be just what the doctor ordered for this sickly team . He has the pedigree.

Carroll's collegiate success prompted an NFL return in 2010 when he was hired as the head coach of Seattle. In 14 seasons under Carroll, the Seahawks qualified for the playoffs 10 times, clinched their division five times, made two consecutive Super Bowl appearances, and won the franchise's first championship in Super Bowl XLVIII. The team's Legion of Boom defense also led the league in scoring defense for four consecutive seasons during his tenure. Following the 2023 season, Carroll stepped down as head coach to take an advisory position with the Seahawks.

Very surprised at hiring a 73 year old head coach. Per PFR, he is currently 73 years and 128 days old, turning 74 in September. That means he will surpass the previous oldest head coach in NFL history -- Romeo Crennel, who was 73 years and 199 days old on his last day as a NFL head coach -- by early April.

How long can the Raiders reasonably expect him to coach?

They work in 12-19 month increments. He should make that….

Personally the owners of the Cowboys and Raiders seem to be the primary stumbling block to producing a top NFL team for their fans. Does the presence of Brady compensate for the owner issues for the Raiders?

Same thing was said about Lions ownership. Then, IIRC, one of the daughters took over the team and hired Chris Spielman to lead the search for a new GM and HC. We know how that turned out.

Ownership can be a stumbling block but being willing to install the proper people to lead the football operations is a very good sign. Say what you will about Mark Davis but he doesn't seem to be the kind of owner who fancies himself to be a GM, ala Jerruh. He has made efforts to install good football people, personally I think reversing course isn't necessarily a bad sign if things are heading off the rails.

Let's see what happens now that Brady seems to be an active part of the search committee.

I commend Mork for not riding his loser picks. Man is willing to hit the reset when ****'s clearly not working, even if means taking loads of heat and eating even bigger loads of contracts. I appreciate that. The only firing I have disagreed with (sort of) was Bisachia, Gruden notwithstanding due to obvious external factors.

So, no one wants Spags, huh?

No chance that he has a better idea how to run a winning franchise in the 13 years since he was last an NFL HC?

At the very least it hurts the Chiefs.

Raiders have reported hired their GM, John Spytek (former Bucs assistant GM).
If true it's interesting Liam Coen apparently just committed to staying in TB.
They also made him the highest paid Coordinator in the league. So continuity, plus a pay raise, may have been enough for him to kick a shot at a HC job down the road a bit.

Now we just need Bruce Arians to step down from his role and become our head coach and the Tom Brady make over will be complete

The Jacksonville Jaguars were left at the altar on Wednesday, with Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator taking his name out of the running for the Jaguars' head coach job on the same day he was supposed to have a second interview with the Jaguars.

On surface, one would think Coen withdrew from a search that he was the clear favorite in because the Buccaneers made him promises about the future -- namely a process to eventually be the repplacement for current head coach Todd Bowles.

But according to Tampa Bay Times' Rick Stroud, the Buccaneers are making no such promises to Coen. Instead, he is getting a raise and nothing more -- a sign that there are serious questions with the Jaguars job.

"No promises were made to Liam Coen by the Bucs. There is no coach in waiting stipulation in his new contract similar to what the Patriots did with Jerod Mayo. Coen simply believed that remaining with the Bucs as offensive coordinator was the best opportunity for his future," Stroud said.

Will be interesting to see if Brady and Spytek could be more compelling for Coen than Baalke and the Super Mario Bro that owns the Bucs.

If so, perhaps FAs Kyle Trask and Chris Godwin would be next to follow to Al Le Giant Stadium.

Hmmm Brady working late into the evening to get any advantage he can get. SPYtek ...who would've thought?
Feels like you're making a judgement call on the hire. Would you mind sharing your NFL GM devy fantasy draft board?
Just saying anything with Spy in the name garners thought. lol

I got it and it was funny. Well done.

Reportedly the following have been interviewed:

  • Pete Carroll
  • Aaron Glenn
  • Ben Johnson
  • Vance Joseph
  • Todd Monken
  • Ron Rivera
  • Robert Salah
  • Steve Spagnuolo

The only one I would want is Carroll. He is old as dirt and I will confess I have never been a fan of his (but that largely was due to his being at USC and me being an Irish fan). I think he can come in and get things going faster than any of the above (even over Johnson), he has a ton of connections and respect that he can bring in top notch coaches under him and he has been a pretty consistent winner in the NFL and college. His age means he likely won't be around too long but he could be exactly what we need in doing the work to get this team ready to be taken over by someone else and a team that would be more appealing to an up and comer.

That one went right over my head.

Nice.

I like Pete Carroll, mostly because of his time at USC and the Legion of Boom years in Seattle were fun to watch too.

But, in 2024? His rah-rah approach may/could put them in playoff contention most years but... can he get a team over the hump?

I fear he would bring in Darrel Bevel to run the offense. Maybe Shane Waldron. I can't deny they developed Russell Wilson and resurrected Geno Smith but IDK...I still question they are the guys to develop a young QB like O'Connell (if you unfocus your eyes like with one of those wild 3D graphics from the 90s, he looks like a young Peyton Manning) or a rookie.

If the Raiders are going to bring in a former Super Bowl winning HC give me McCarthy. He gives me more confidence to develop a QB and scheme a highly competitive offense in 2025.

So, question to you all: who is your favored candidate?

Without giving it too much thought, of the remaining candidates I lean towards Todd Monken & Kliff Kingsbury.

As long as AOC is the qb, bill walsh, belicheck, don shula, chuck knoll, bill parcells, don coryell, tom Landry, reid, Payton, mcvay, Lombardi, etc, etc,etc won’t make a lick of difference.

Monken is my top choice. After that I'm warming up to Carroll. He won't be around forever, but we could use a bridge coach to get things going in the right direction. People use the word "culture builder" with Carroll but I think our culture is mostly fine internally. We don't have quys quitting, we don't have guys wanting out, we played hard to the end and won a couple of games even though that's not in our draft position's best interest. It's our public culture that's a mess. Hiring, firing, losing, restock. We need to fix that first.

Instead I think Carroll could bring a few years of organizational stability, something we desperately need. Maybe we pair him with a "coach in waiting" like Saleh or a young guy that just needs a few years of seasoning - think Josh McCown at OC. Spend 3 years building up your playbook and playcalling, ease into an overall leadership responsibility?

Carroll is my top choice because I do think we need a culture builder. Davante just wanted out last year and Max probably won't be far behind without a culture change. Carroll brings credibility, positivity and a great resume.

I'm down on Monken. In the biggest spots there have been red flags. The gameplan last year in the AFC title game vs the Chiefs was absolutely horrible and he's never been a HC before so he's a total crapshoot.

The average for the AFC West coaches is now 65.

73-year-old Pete Carroll will make history this season as the oldest head coach in NFL history.

The title belongs to Romeo Crennel, who was 73 years and 199 days old for his last game on Jan. 3, 2021 with the Texans.

Carroll will turn 74 on September 15.

We just need 3 years of Carroll to, theoretically, get the franchise back on a winning track. Culture, talent…everything needs to be improved.

Damn, we need a QB.

So now we have our bridge HC. Do we tank for Arch? Are fans even up for that? Brutal division and we're sunk without a QB. ******** on Russell Wilson (although he'd probably be good for the tanking optics - terrible enough to win, enough street cred it doesn't look like we're tanking) being any kind of answer. I think Carroll knows this won't be a quick turnaround, so why not? Hire Bobby Slowik at OC and see if he can learn from his mistakes because he was a hot hot hot commodity at this time last year - just as Liam Coen is now. Bring back Patrick Graham and see if we can keep defensive contributors happy while the offense catches up.

I know the first thing detractors will say is that if we do that we need to trade Maxx, but that's just not true. He's only 27 right now, he'll play this year freshly 28, so he's got plenty of premium years left.

It’s just lunacy to hire a 70+ year old to run a large organization. Especially one who did it before and wasn’t invited back immediately. Does he at least bring a group of loyal followers to help him run things his way?
