Its gonna be pretty hard to mess up drafting a receiver early this year

WR is a real need for this team, there are plenty of OL/DL to be had after the 32, very few quality receivers after the first 50 picks. The biggest reason the pats have had a #### record of drafting wrs is because they don't draft wrs before the 50... ever...

I disagree with this strategy. As things stand tight now (always a fluid situation, however), the Pats are short 4 starters and a significant role player on offense. CB, CB, DL, OL, and 3rd down RB (unless there is someone on the roster they want to use in that role). Drafting another receiver will probably yield limited results in the short term. IMO, Pats should be looking to fill more vital slots with early draft picks.

That being said, it does not make sense to draft guys way to early just because they have a need in a certain spot. They won't draft a CB at pick 32 if the next best one they have rated as their 78th best player. Depending how things shape up, I would project the Pats to either move up if there is a defensive player they really want (like they did with Mayo) or trade down (like they have for years) to pick up another pick and still get someone they like that other teams won't take as early as NE would.

You would think for being such a defensive genius BB would have had a better track record for drafting DBs. He has taken 3 guys that ended up as Pro Bowl DBs in Asante, McCourty, and the Big Bang Clock. But the rest of the guys were pretty disappointing (as were their attempts in free agency pre Revis and Browner). Not sure how much say he had in drafting for other teams, but the Giants ended up taking Terry Kinard and Mark Haynes while the Browns selected Eric Turner (all ended up in the Pro Bowl at some point). I am guessing the track record for BB in taking DBs is probably better than average but still far from great.

Since picking up Branch and Givens, the only noteworthy WR the Pats have drafted was Edelman. BB got great value (at least for a while) out of Michael Jackson. Alexander turned into a decent receiver (just not while Bill was around).

 
Drafting a WR early would be stupid, both from a need standpoint as well as a track record standpoint. They function fine with WR that are quick and not afraid to go over the middle.

The key for them is to be able to get to the QB giving the loss of CBs. If Gronk is healthy, the offense is Top 5 in scoring.

Youd think with all these articles floating around about the Pats situation and what they've done in the past people wouldn't be shooting down taking a prototypically great WR.

There isn't a series of events that will allow the Pats to get back to playing press man this year, they've clearly shown they aren't even attempting to, in fact thats perfectly in line with what they've done in the past. Why use a worse version of something that worked, when you can just make it work another way - like they are doing switching back to a mostly zone defense with a legit pass rush.

The Pats are gonna have to score some serious points this season if they wanna make up for the pts they'll be allowing. The Pats offense needs to weave and it seems like everyone here is expecting them to bob. Edelmen is great in the Pats system, Dola is too, unfortunately hes the second possession receiver of their three starting caliber receivers. Its pretty clear why Dola is sticking around, because he performed almost as well as Jules and Jules suffered a concussion that sidelined him for a few games and we know exactly how likely that will be in the future to happen again. Lafell was fine last year, Lafell is not good. In two years he'll be gone, he might even be gone next year (2016 season,) the point is the problem needs to be fixed at some point and now is a pretty damn good time to fix it.

Despite what some choose to believe the Pats are incredibly thin at WR and they have no true #1 and they haven't since Moss. Brady isn't gonna be here for forever, who knows how long Edelman is gonna be Edelman before he becomes Wes Welker - hopefully he sticks around and it never happens. The point is they have to draft someone this year or next and despite the glaring holes in their roster they are gonna have several opportunities this draft to take OL/DL and the same isn't the case for the WRs.

I can't name five WRs worth taking after pick 50 this year. Funchess if he somehow slips all the way, Mcbride, maybe Bell?

IMO, a big downfield receiver is still more a luxury than anything else.

I like the Cadet signing, didn't realize he was a good returnman.

Anyone else enjoying this back and forth bloodbath over Charles Clay. I think the Fins legitimately wanted to field a 2TE offense. It's hilarious either way.

 
I know the Pats are geniuses at found treasure but Cadet was no Sproels and my guess is he will be no Vereen.

i can tell you though it used to be fun watching him play pitch and catch with Brees at Saints camp, he'd run that corner end zone route like Sproles used to do and they had great timing, probably there's lots left yet to be exploited in what he can do and he's been a project who may finally emerge into ready.

I'm really only worried about whether he can turn around and catch footballs. Something Vereen struggled with his whole time in NE.

 
It was brutal watching him go out to the flat it felt like everytime Tom threw it behind him it depended on which way Shane turned or he had like a 60% chance to drop it.

The Cadet signing is good. He'll fill in fine for Vereen.

I like Vereen. I liked Woodhead. I loved Faulk. With Brady throwing the ball, the Pats seem to do well at finding a very functional 3rd down back. If anyone truly misses Vereen, it might be because they just watched Vereen go out after his peak game as a Patriot in the most important game of his career. He was awesome in SB49, but I think it's a stretch to expect that kind of game from him every week, especially as the Pats shuffle RBs around depending on matchups (see: Blount, AFCCG).

I miss Woodhead, he had the makings to be better than Faulk. :cry:

First off, I can't believe Tony Dungy is this butthurt about the shell game.

Second, why does NE even have to propose the NFL put ####### fixed cameras on all the sidelines, endlines and goal lines - these things should already exist.

Chandler has a two year deal for a total of $5.3 million with $2 million guaranteed.

I am waiting for the jumbo package against IND with Gronk and Chandler at TE, an extra lineman at FB, and Blount running the ball. Eight blockers at 270 lbs plus.

 
Ninkovich is the man. I didn't realize Cadet was like 6'1" 210? I thought he was a little guy. Very unexciting CB signings, Fletcher was torch city but we'll see who even makes the team. Here's hoping Butler becomes a #1.
