Indefinite New England Patriots Thread (5 Viewers)

Was listening to Greg Bedard (who knows his stuff) on the radio yesterday...they do a 3 up and 3 down segment...his #1 for up was Detrich Wise...said so far he looks the part of a legit player...from body size to how he is playing...if the Pats hit on this pick the timing could not be better with Ninkovich's retirement...Lawrence Guy was his #2 up and he had Rivers in his down but I forget what #...

OK, I have to agree that by moving money to this year was brilliant. Carr still gets his 5 year $25m per and the team doesn't take such a cap hit.

Looks like about $20m a year against the cap on average so he is in the ballpark of Ryan / Brady as far as eating up cap space. Likely will be a bargain towards the end of the contract.

... and this whole exercise was about cap hit / helping the team. Luck and Flacco have Carr beat by $4m a year or so in cap hit.

I'm surprised the Patriots do not restructure Brady ... or anyone else for that matter, to spend to the cap and ease the burden on the cap down the road.

From what I understand they have some room under the cap this year. (but maybe that has changed with recent addition of Harris).

They can and they probably will move money around. Lots of moving parts. They have all season to play with the cap.  NE has anywhere from $13.3M to $14.6M in cap room depending upon where you look. Not sure if that accounts for Ninkovich retirement. There has been some speculation that NE may be saving most of that money to deal with the Jimmy G situation.

Here is a list of upcoming Patriot Free Agents...they are in pretty good shape...the three big ones are Jimmy G, Butler and Solder...Jimmy G's and Butler's situation are well known so need to rehash...Solder will be interesting...a good but not great player...he is definitely someone you could see retire early as there have been rumblings about that in the past...the Pats did draft two tackles this season and if one could develop that would be a huge swing in cap space as Solder currently makes over 10 mil a year (not sure what his cap hit is this year)...hopefully he stays for a few more years though...between Light and Solder that LT position has been well manned for a decade and a half...

Patriots first NFL Team to purchase their own plane(s) for team travel

 

Sources tell ESPN that the reigning Super Bowl champions bought two 767 Boeing wide-body jets in the offseason and retrofitted them with all first-class seats, some of which recline completely. On the outside of at least one of the planes is the team logo and five Lombardi trophies on the tail.

These planes, depending on miles flown and condition, generally cost between $5 million and $65 million. A source said the planes the Patriots bought are extended range, which allows the planes to fly nonstop for about 12 hours.

A brand new plane could cost $200 million.

One plane will be used as the main plane for the season, while the other will be the backup, with flight operations being run out of Providence, Rhode Island, sources said. Patriots spokesman Stacey James said team officials would not be publicly commenting on the acquisitions.

NFL teams haven't thought much about buying their own planes in the past, with only 10 games on the road. But charter travel has gotten more expensive over the past couple of years, due to the major carriers starting to retire the bigger planes that fly the teams around.

The bigger planes -- which can carry a full team, its support staff and the onerous amount of equipment the team needs on the road -- are being retired because they are nearing a point in their life cycle where they have to be stripped, fully gutted and reworked in order to satisfy Federal Aviation Administration requirements. Airlines like Delta and American have chosen to begin retiring the planes instead of going through what would be a cost-prohibitive reboot.

American said last year that it would no longer fly the Arizona Cardinals,Baltimore Ravens, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins. At least two of those teams, the Steelers and the Dolphins, took their business to charter-only airline, Miami Air, sources said.

The rising cost of chartering flights for NFL teams makes the decision to buy a plane somewhat easier. Sources with knowledge of the deals teams have done with charter companies say the 10 round-trip flights per season can cost up to $4 million.

It is expected that team-owned planes will help give athletes a leg up on the recovery process, which is one of the areas that interested the Patriots.

Very interesting to see what impact if any these customized planes may have on recovery/treatment for players... particularly on London/Mexico City games. 

 
Cost for the plane is between $5m and $65m ..... I'm guessing the higher end with all of that custom work done to the interior.

Cost to charter a team for 10 road games is $4m ... but that doesn't include road playoff games.

A team like the NYG is likely to have 13 road games in a season making the cost of owning more justifiable ...

while other teams like the Jets don't have to worry much about road playoff games.

In fact, I bet Kraft could make a few bucks by chartering his jet to the Giants. How cool would that be for the G-men to climb aboard the Pats plane on their way to Green Bay in January.

The only flaw that I see is that they didn't leave room for a 6th trophy on the tail.

 
Eyes are on Wise, Langi, Jonathan Jones, Adam Butler, Garcia, Cyrus Jones and Rivers...if some of these guys prove to be legit it adds some real nice, athletic talent that makes almost no $...

For example, Lewis has played a lot of snaps and already has 11 touches. The Pats generally sit their primary skill players, so to me it probably means Lewis is lower on the RB food chain.

I would agree with that...they were really down on him the end of last season...he is going to have to earn his way onto this team...he has the feel of someone who could end up being traded...zero to base that on...just a gut feeling...

I wish I didn't feel this way but I always have a bad feeling when Cyrus Jones is in the game...

 
DJ Foster is not going to sleep well tonight after that...you know BB has that played circled...and not in a good way...

I tend to agree with Anarchy ... other than QB, the players in the game preseason week one are on the cusp.

White not on the field but Lewis is ... Lewis is on the bubble.

Bolden is out unless they REALLY value his special teams play.

Cyrus Jones couldn't look any worse. They'll give him every chance to prove himself in the next 3 pre-season games ... if he can't then he's out.

I tend to agree.  And Carr looked good as well.  Is this really the end for Amendola?  Or are these two going to practice squad?

Jules, Amendola, Cooks, Hogan, Mitchell, Amendola, Hollister, Carr, Slater, Lucien?  Cut Amendola and Lucien, that still leaves 8 WRs (!).

I'd be fairly surprised if they cut Amendola.  I do agree that it's possible we'll see two WRs make it to the practice squad.

I'd guess the WRs that are locks to make the roster include: Edelman, Amendola, Cooks, Hogan, Mitchell.  I think either Hollister, Carr, and Lucien potentially make the roster as a WR/special teamer, with either of the others (or both) making the practice squad.  Slater might end up on IR, given that he possibly suffered a serious injury last week (or the week before, can't recall) during camp.

Unless Amendola has a twin brother on the team, you listed him twice. The problem with trying to stash guys on the practice squad is that they are free agents . . . any team can sign them at any time.

If Hollister makes it it will be as the #3 TE...

 
- Patriots rolled out mostly 2nd & 3rd Stringers on offense and 2nd & 3rd Stringers on defense so it's hard to get any feel for them as a unit at all. I think Roberts and Feeney were the only "starters" of note on defense.
- CB Cyrus Jones was getting torched a lot. LB Elandon Roberts was doing what he showcased last year, making plays and showing speed prior to his injury.
- WR Austin Carr looked really good in the time he played. Made a fantastic TD catch to keep his name notable, reminded me of Chris Harper's run in pre-season when he stood out. Don't know if he makes the 53 Man Roster but has an outside shot.
- I think RB Brandon Bolden ends up being cut. He's solid but isn't special as a runner or receiver and he does play ST but I don't think that's enough to keep him as a 5th RB. Was worth noting how much time Dion Lewis received & he looked better.
- TE Holliston flashed a little bit. Had an up and down game but that 3rd TE spot is usually a dogfight for the Patriots so it'll be interesting to see who can lock that up behind Gronkowski/Dwayne Allen.

I don't know how much stock to put in this as it was only the first pre-season game and the Patriots were rolling out a combination of 2nd & 3rd Stringers on offense and defense. Game 2 should give us a better insight if these guys are for real, especially in the secondary.

Yeah, couldn't remember if it was Holliston or Hollister so thanks for the correction. The article also pointed out what I saw when I meant an up & down game as far as his blocking skills being inconsistent (some great blocks, some subpar ones). He flashed as a receiver, of course, but it was only Game 1 mostly against Jaguars backup defenders.

Good first step as far as angling for the TE3 role but he hasn't locked it in by any means just yet.

 
This may have been already been talked about a few times on here but can any of you Pats homers give any indication how the back field share might shape out?  I am guessing the pecking order right now is Gillislee, White, Burkhead, then Lewis?  Thanks guys!

 
Regulars know me as a Pats homer...curious for your reactions to the following....

I see the Pats (-7 at home) losing the season opener to the Chiefs.  Hill wild card plus Chiefs defense and the rest of the roster at full strength...not to mention I wouldn't put it past BB to want there to be a teaching moment early on to address the whole undefeated season crap.

Considering taking KC straight up.

 
Pats fans - I had DJ Foster as a deep sleeper, and I read that he looked good in OTAs earlier this year.  However, it seems there are just too many people in front of him to crack 53 this year.  Correct?  Injuries notwithstanding, will he likely stay on the PS this season?

Always tuff to predict since NE is so opponent specific week to week with their game plans but my "guess" would be that u have the base order about right. IMHO people r going to regret passing on Gilly in the 5th n 6th rds. I do think Rex hurts GL touches for Gilly and I also think he hurts Whites rec totals. So tuff to predict on wk to wk basis but Gilly is the one im most interested in. This is how I see it, but really im just guessing so buyer beware.

My :2cents:

With the exception of BB intentionally trying to lose the home opener (which u seem 2 b suggesting, not happening) anything is possible. I don't see Hill and the relatively slight KC edge on DEF making up for the huge NE edge on offense playing at home. Obviously anything could happen but a blowout much more like imho than a KC win and I would be wanting more than 7. GL

I think u r correct and they appear to b so deep at rb & wr i can't see him making the roster unless they deal or cut Lewis and even then maybe not. I know they like him but not sure they can slip him to the PS either so it should be interesting.

Just to make sure everyone is on the same page and understands how things work, "Slipping" a guy to the practice squad is essentially a term that carries little meaning. All players on every practice squad are street free agents. They can be signed by any team at any time (provided they are placed on the new team's 53-man roster). Even if a player makes it through waivers to get on to the practice squad, another team can claim that player at any time.

So if DJ Foster or Austin Carr were on the Patriots practice squad and another team had no depth at RB or WR, they could snatch those guys away at any point. There is some honor among thieves and it doesn't happen often, but it does happen from time to time.

Thanks NER!

I thought he was a playmaker at ASU.  Had a rougher time at WR, but it was his first year.  I imagine that if any team can get the most out of a jack of all trades type player like him, it's the Patriots.
