I posted this in the FFA and wanted to share here to keep people in the loop.

Hi Folks,

Apologies for being late in replying on this.

We changed the available one click reaction emojis. We had the laughing and the smile and they're no longer an option.

We did that because people repeatedly would use them to mock and laugh at other posters. We asked over and over for people to stop and people refused.

Finally, we just got tired of asking.

I've no doubt the forum would be better if I had more patience. I just ran out of patience there. I'm sorry.

Posters would repeatedly use them to laugh AT another poster. And that's opposed to everything we've always tried to make the community about.

So while I'm sure this won't be popular. We're doing to try and make the community a place that's inclusive and where people are less likely to be mocked.

The emojis in the comments are still available. If you want to laugh with someone with :lmao: that's great. But please don't use that to laugh at or mock someone or to passive aggressively signal that's what they're saying is laughable.

For instant reactions emojis, we have
  • Thank You
  • Love
  • Thinking
  • Sad
  • Like
That will hopefully cover the instant reactions. And I'm sure this post will get some of those.

Bottom line, we did this because I've seen up close how a community can suffer when people are mocked or laughed at.

I could absolutley be totally wrong on this, but I think removing the instant reactions like we did helps a little bit with the mocking or excluding others.

I'm certain folks will disagree and you could well be right.

Like we've done for 25 years here, I don't know if what I'm doing is the right thing. But it's the thing I've tried to be thoughtful in considering and it's the thing I think is the right thing.

Thanks.

To add, please don't do the "let's make the ______ emoji the new laughing at you emoji". thing.

We have enough cliques and exclusion stuff already as it is.

If you like or love or think something is funny, please use the like or love emoji.

If you think something is laughably stupid, please type a question and kindly state your position and why you think the other poster is wrong.

I think that's a better way to have a discussion. Again, I could be totally wrong. But that's what I think.

I’ve seen people to use the sad reaction to be passive aggressive, so why have that one? I suppose we will just have to post with laugh emoji or laugh reaction. Or is that next to not be allowed?

How about posting I’m smiling excessively right now whe someone posts something funny? Sometimes the smile emoji just isn’t enough.

Please just post the :lmao: as a comment then.
Oh yeah, I forgot that one. Can’t it be used the say way the other one that you are hoping to avoid? I would advocate some lengthy downtime for those that do.

I think we'll be ok.

We have our differences but overall, this is a great group. Most of the trouble came from the one click emojis. I hope and think we'll be fine.

As stated in another thread, if someone gets triggered over an emoji, they have some serious issues. I’ve used it and had it used against me. Never did I feel picked on. What’s next, having to use preferred pronouns or be banned from FBG? 🫣
Yes please. Please refer to me as “it him” going forward, thanks.

It’s just emoji’s people. It’s not the end of the world. We are grown adults. If them being around was causing stress for Joe, the staff, and some members— we should totally be okay with their removal. We get to patronize these forums for free because of Joe and the staff. Nobody should be complaining about a product or service that is free.

I don’t seriously think anyone really cares. It’s just a commentary on how certain people can be offended by anything and they have to be catered to if they scream loud enough.

Proceed

Thanks. I agree in I hope nobody cares too much if there are one click emojis or not. We went for years with no ability there to have the one click emojis.

I do see sometimes people being too sensitive on things. But on this, I do think it's the right thing to limit some of the mocking and laughing at people. That doesn't feel too sensitive to me.

From the start, we've moderated this forum because I saw other forums fall apart where people were uncool to each other. I saw talented people leave other forums for good when they were treated uncooly. So from the start, we wanted to create a space here that limited the uncool to each other behavior as much as we could. Not allowing the laughing at one click emoji seems like that fits there. Again, I could well be wrong. But that's what seems right to us.

I never noticed what you referenced, the posters being mocked that is. I’m sure I’m not alone.
Most everyone gets mocked at some point but yeah, I have never noticed anyone getting signaled out repeatedly.
Are you mocking me… with that outfit?

Joe,

If someone is being offensive punish the offender.

Don’t make it everyone else’s problem.

Thanks. We tried that repeatedly without success. We didn't feel mass suspensions was the right thing.

Not sure I follow the logic here.

If someone isn’t up to the standard, you deal with that individual.

Would it make sense to change the policy based on a couple of turds?

Maybe I’m crazy, but effective communication, effective management, would address getting rid of the turds.

Keep going until the turds are gone.

Or - far more likely - people start to notice there’s a no floaters policy here.

That would modify behavior.

The action you’re decided upon is a little bit insane. IMO, and I’m certified lol.

The turds won’t go away. They’ll just keep floating in the pool. The people you want around here will just drift away because you made it less enjoyable.

Because leaving turds in the pool makes it stink for everyone.

You’ll have the same problem - there are turds in the pool - but you’ll have less decent folks who know how to be civil.

Thanks. We just see it differently in I chose not to suspend a lot of people for posting an emoji laughing at people.

Again, that might not be the right thing and maybe we should suspend more people.

But at this time, that didn't feel like the right response.

It really is punishing the whole class because of a couple trouble makers in the back of the class.

I don't know why anyone is upset with you removing it? It's a little smiley face. If it being here enhances or devalues your user experience in any way you probably need to get off the internet for a bit.

I saw a guy light a book under Rosemary Epperson’s desk In high school. I thought it deserved a laugh emoji, but they didn’t have those back then.

Let’s not pretend it’s not a two way street, posters provide info that goes into FBG content.

I don’t disagree with you at all. The world would be much easier to navigate through if everybody had super thick skin. That’s just not a reality. However, I just find the grown adults freaking out over a couple emoji’s weird. We are all guests in Joe’s house here. If I go to somebody’s house—and they politely ask me to take my shoes off before entering—-I’m going to take my shoes off. The moment that Joe said he preferred not to have those emojis in HIS forums that he’s providing to us for FREE—a giant portion of posters found loopholes and ways to post them anyway. In my opinion—that is more juvenile than being thin-skinned. He effectively asked us to remove our shoes—and a big portion of us think that it’s cool to wear their dirty shoes all over his house and go out of their way to rub it in his face. These are the same people that claim that they don’t “see” any rudeness in these boards.

What do you expect in a world of safe spaces now?

I’m fairly thick skinned and none of it bothers me either way (having or not having emojis, getting mocked or not, whatever) but this whining and strawmanning about pronouns and safe spaces seems closer to toxic than people laugh reacting if they read something they feel is laughable

Edit: and I’ll admit to having used the laugh react derisively, generally happy to abide by board rules I just didn’t realize it was something at issue/that anyone cared about

Stop with the micro aggression, you’re triggering me.

Like if the general idea is keeping the shark pool on football and avoiding threads devolving into left right political back and forth, what value does allowing this stuff add?

I totally feel and understand guys complaining that this change is in the "woke-sphere", and it kind of is probably, and I hate woke crap as much as anyone ... but it's an emoji ... it'll be okay. Probably more about the principle to them, than the emoji.

Who said anything about politics?

Nobody. I think this one has probably played the course. Mostly want to let folks know what we're doing. Thanks and let's get back to the other threads and football.

So just to be crystal clear, because I don’t want to be suspended or banned, it’s ok to do this (😂😂😂) it just wasn’t ok for me to hit the laughing emoji button.

I’m not judging or criticizing. Simply clarifying.

The :lmao: is ok too. The point was to not have the laugh emoji one click I believe, hopefully cutting down on the number of misuse. You know, laughing at in a mean spirited manner.

It's a definite imperfection in the decision that was made, yes ... No denying that.

ETA: But still, no it's not okay to do (😂😂😂) in a post if it's mocking another user. It can still "be done" but it's not allowed. The reaction was made impossible, rather than just "not allowed".

That's correct. We simply removed it from the one click instant reaction emoji thing in the lower right of each post. That's the only change.

Emojis are still allowed in the comments.

We ask that folks don't use them to laugh at or mock other posters. Thanks.
