Interview for job, Current boss on interview committee as a consultant (1 Viewer)

So I was called today an interview for a great job opportunity. I found out that my current boss was asked to be one of the three-member interview consultants by the interviewing company. I confirmed with the hiring company that my boss doesn't know yet who the candidates are.

I really want this job and want to stay in the interview candidacy list. I talked to several of my professional colleagues about this issue today. Got some good advice but wondered if anyone on here has ever faced this type of issue before. I'm thinking of just sitting down with the boss and telling him that I've been called for the interview and that I know that he is on the committee and leave the issue in his court. In the least it will be a little awkward in the interview, but I definitely see a big conflict of interest on his part if he were to actually partake in my interview.

Even were you not a candidate, how is it not a conflict of interest for your boss to be on the interview committee for another (presumably competing) company?

Well main question is how would he feel about you leaving?

Not only that how would he like you even interviewing elsewhere?

Many bosses would be ok with this, but it just depends on yours

What's your relationship with your boss like? Would he be surprised to know you are looking?

This, this, & this...

Just to add, my boss was asked to be the committee as an expert in the field of planning and zoning. They will also have two other "experts" on this panel. I guess they are trying to get an unbiased opinion of my professional skills. To be honest, this is the weirdest first interview environment I've ever heard of.

Is this right? Doesn't make sense to me that there would be that sort of relationship.

Meanwhile I would definitely talk to the boss because of all things you don't want to surprise him on the spot. What I would assume here is that you are looking at a good career move, that your references are good including with your boss, and that you are on good terms with your current associates/management. You present it in such a positive manner and let him decide whether it's appropriate to weight in or recuse himself. This way you shouldn't jeopardize your current position and may well encourage your boss to also consider you for advancement opportunities should opportunity arise. It never hurts--or shouldn't--to be motivated to advancement.

My general rule of thumb is that you are never leaving a place--you are going somewhere. A good boss will support such motivation.

Don't tell your boss. Walk into the interview and act totally shocked. Point at your current boss and yell "This man offered me $200 to let him blow me!"

That's what I would do.

You know, I don't know. There never has been anything personal between us. My previous boss before this guy I am still very good friends with and I asked him about this situation. He is and always was very positive about his employees persuing better opportunities. This guy isn't as easy to read.

Yea, I guess I always like to keep things above board when it comes to something like this. That's why I thought I'd tell him and put the ball in his court with regard to potential conflict of interest. Totally agree with the bolded.

I got called from a previous boss to post for an upcoming job, he was on my interview committee and I didn't get the job. I think if it's a company of any size they have a process where your current boss can be there, and in many cases it's a good thing having a potential ally in the interview. How is your relationship with this boss?

It's OK.
