iPad (2 Viewers)

Have to say, this thing is really starting to grow on me. Haven't bothered to turn on my laptop at home in about a week now. I even forgot it at work one day last week, and had a restore running. Got into corporate network via VPN, logged into backup server via rdp with wyse pocket cloud to check restore. Moved volumes from media server back to original host with issh and command view via safari. Then used the email client to send mail via our notes server. I couldn't do an entire workday on it or anything, but at home it does 95% of what I need, and can do about anything I need for work in a pinch.

I use logmein to access my company quick books on the iPad. Works great.
I used to use logmein on my home pc to access work pc. It is ok (free maybe?) but the citrix client is much much better, they have an iPad app, GoToMyPC.com can probably provide more details - I don't have an iPad yet, but I hear good things about it even on that hw.

Got a free iPad first version and was just told I could swap it for the new one. Any reason I shouldn't do this.?
Is the swap free? If it is free absolutely swap it.

The new one is noticeably lighter, thinner and faster (has a better processor in it).

Ipad 2 has double the DDR memory as well which likely means it can support newer versions of IOS in the future more easily than the original can. It also includes two cameras.

Two questions.

1) when I watch HD vids on YouTube I am having problems. The pipe to my house is probably too slow and the download does not keep up with the playing causing constant pauses. Normally I would simply pause the vid and allow enough of the buffer to fill up so that it can play with out pausing. The problem I seem to be having is that when I pause the vid, it appears to stop downloading so I can't fill up the buffer. Am I doing something wrong?

2) on my netbook I kept our recipes on some simple HTML files on my hard drive and accessed the through firefox. I know the iPad does not have a file system. Is there any way I can get these files on to the iPad and look at them with Safari?

picked up an AT&T 3G 64GB yesterday, only installed HBO Go, GotoMyPC, and Verizon Netfios remote so far - guess I have some reading to do in this thread. It would be good if Redding updated the first post with a summary of apps by category that people have recommended. I'll see what I can put together, but won't be for a few days judging by the length of this thread.

Hmmm, just searched this thread and the FFA for oPlayer and came up empty, anyone use it? You can sideload videos via wifi (outside of iTunes), also it uses the Quicktime plugin for any iPhone/iPad formatted movies so you get the benefits of the hardware accelerated iPad player w/o having to go through iTunes for purchasing the video (at least I think that is the drawback of using the stock player). I downloaded the free 'Lite' version first to try it out.

how is this different than putting a video file in dropbox?

the sideload feature is probably the same or similar, it also plays other formats (The full list of supported formats includes MP3, WMA, RM, AAC, WMV, AVI, MKV, RMVB, XVID, MP4, MOV, 3GP and MPG). Actually come to think of it, if you upload it to your dropbox that means you need to wait to download it from your drop box too, so that takes twice as long, by sideloading you drop it directly on your iPad in half the time

I'm going to check this out, thanks. I'm never really in a hurry to get a video on my ipad--usually loading up a couple movies for my daughter if she gets bored on a long trip or something, but the additional supported formats is definitely a plus.

Just read the last 10 pages of this thread, only app suggestions I see are NCAA App, iSwifter, and Skyfire - any good apps people can recommend?
Was looking for some suggestions myself. Trying to make this corporate rollout wow people as much as possible. Have office apps covered, file sharing with this mobilEcho software. Email, all the core stuff. Have played with stuff like air display for an extra monitor, using the vga adapter for presentations on a projector, wise pocket cloud for remote PC/server access. Scanning, which seems to suck on iPad because the camera sort of blows. Going to mess with FaceTime for video conferencing. So, what other apps out there are going to make someone in the corporate world say "wow, this is way better than how I'm used to doing it"?

There are a number of reporting and statistics apps that are visually wonderful in showing data like sales and hours, etc.

As far as a couple apps I recommend:

Tunein radio - this kicks some serious ###. Would be especially cool for someone that travels a lot and wants their home radio stations on the road.

Loving netflix and hulu on this thing. Netflix is better, but hulu holds up pretty good. Their interface is just a little suckier. Also a fan of the dish network remote access app, both for programming my DVR but also streaming if you have their sling service. I can watch tv anywhere in the house, and even on the road with picture quality depending on network speed.

War pinball hd is a fun pinball game. Solid physics, you can tilt by moving the pad, very fun.

Order and chaos is a solid MMO and not all that expensive if you're into that sort of thing, Wifi only is the big downside to it.

Any that stand above the rest? I'm a unix guy mostly, so getting into productivity apps is kind of out of my area of expertise. I saw this article 30 useful apps for business and presentation and a ton of this stuff looks really cool but I'm wondering which are really going to offer value and improve the way laptop oriented people are used to doing things.

What are the best porn streaming sites that work on the iPad?

I use youporn and tube8 but are there any others I should know about?

So wasn't sure if this was worth its own thread but figure I would ask this question here firt. I am thinking about getting either the top of the line Ipad2 or the small macbook air. Not much more expensive to get the macbook air but was wondering what people thought.

My job is very intensive with very long hours and the need to be connected at all times. People tend to be shocked at the times I work and client demands. I wanted to get a mobile device so I would be a little less tied to my laptop so was thinking I would get an Ipad but given how small the macbook air is and the price difference not being major was thinking about getting the macbook air. However, don't want to just turn myself into carrying around a new laptop around with me.

Any thoughts on this one.

Wait for the Sandy Bridge Macbook Air's coming out next month. I'm a PC guy but that a lot of HP in a tiny machine. The 11" isn't much bigger than an iPad and is much more useful.

Ok, no idea what this means but assume they are new models. Not a bad idea if coming out in July.

What do you do for work. What are your needs for the device?

M&A attorney at a large NYC law firm. Very demanding clients that expect responses any day at all times of the day. I don't think I would do any serious drafting on it but want it for mobility to view documents at all times and email. My bberry sucks for that kinda stuff. Also, for some drafting in a pinch but if I go anywhere for a significant time my laptop goes with me already. The hope is it would free me up some to avoid having a laptop at all times. I would think if I got the small macbook air it really wouldn't replace a laptop either. The Ipad also look like fun and would probably be a bit of a toy. Not sure the airbook has that aspect.ETA - That my firm will pay up to a 1,000 bucks for it so really kind of a free money. Don't mind spending over the 1,000 for airbook but don't want to go crazy.

I'm also an attorney and picked up the iPad2 a few weeks ago. I like it a lot but there's no way I'd want to do any business related typing on it aside from firing off a few quick-hit emails.

What about getting a bluetooth keyboard so that you could do regular typing when needed, but still have the iPad for other stuff?

I assume with the Air you can get it either 3g enabled or have some sort of plug in? Don't want to be tied to WiFi alone.

I love my IPAD more than anything. But if I was still working it would not be appropriate for an engineering work environment, even for just simple coding.

I only have one complaint so far on the IPAD and that's the download speed for HD youtube vids. In googling, it seems numerous people have this exact same problem since the beginning all the way through IPAD2 (and it has nothing to do with the home network, it is specific to IPAD and youtube). There are band aids that some have found to help the basically unusable download speed, but for many they don't work(like me).

My boss is selling an ipad1, 64gb 3g with cover. The best offer he has right now is $400. Anyone interested?
You can get a refurbed one with warranty for $429:first, go to this link and type in zip code, press continue:

http://www.wireless.att.com/IRULo...4 153934f

or http://j.mp/att-link1

then, copy this link and paste over: http://j.mp/att-link2

Edit: You do have to sign up with a $14.99 plan and then cancel. I've read that you can get the $14.99 removed if you call to cancel as soon as you receive the ipad.

The new gestures in iOS5 for the iPad make the experience so incredibly seamless. And I don't even have an iPad, I was watching a video on Youtube.

After I purchased my ipad2 in May, I updated it through iTunes as instructed when I first received it. I then unplugged it and have been perfectly happy using it since then.

Last night, I plugged it back into my computer to upload some photographs from a recent trip. It asked me to update the software, and I did it. It asked if I wanted to back up my apps in iTunes, and I did it. I then moved all the photographs to the iPad.

I noticed today that ALL of my apps were removed from the iPad. When I opened iTunes, they were all listed there, with a check mark next to them and apparently synched. I plugged in my iPad, hit the sync button and all of the apps were delivered back to the iPad.

All my data from all the apps is missing. It is like I just installed every one.

I don't understand the synching process. Why did I lose everything? Why were the apps removed in the first place? Is there any way to get that data back? I'm so frustrated. I thought I was being good by backing up everything, and now I've lost everything that I've done on the iPad for the last two months.

Can anyone help?

For what it is worth, the Apple Geniuses were stumped at multiple managerial levels. "That shouldn't happen." Well, thanks. All I can do now is hope it doesn't happen in the future if/when I ever plug my iPad back into my computer.Bye bye, data.

Another question I'm hoping someone can help me with...

On Internet Explorer I could create a folder in my favorites, put several sites in there, and open them all in separate tabs with one click. It was a nice little time saver for certain situations. Anyone know an iPad browser that will do this?

TIA

need case recommendations for ipad2. anyone?
Toblino 2 Highly recommend
Thanks...question - does the front flap get in the way of your hands or arms when you are using it as a stand in typing mode?I am currently leaning toward the AYL, as it does not utilize the same fold for standing.
No. Not at all.I'm not a fan of the one you linked for two reasons. 1) The leather covers too much of the front of the ipad adding bulk. 2)I like to keep the ipad on the arm of the sofa. For this, you need a wide stable base. The Toblino provides a wide stable base in all 3 viewing positions. The AYL would probably fall over in the upright position.

I also have the Targus viewscape which is a great case. However, the Toblino has the magnet built in that wakes/sleeps the ipad which is an advantage.

Just some things to consider.

Sales of both iPads and iPhones were strong during the quarter: The company said it sold 9.25 million iPads during the quarter, nearly triple the amount it sold a year earlier.
I would hazard a guess that is more ipads sold last quarter than all other tablets combined for the last 12 months.I just don't see any other manufacturer getting enough market share to make this a viable fight.ipad v. android = ipod v. mp3This will also accelerate the move to html5 over flash on the internet imo.
