iPad (3 Viewers)

My Samsung plasma TV has those black edges around it too. Drove me nuts. Roll of duct tape solved the problem.

It's not a BMW. It's a computer that costs less than 90% of the computers out there. I don't see any "hey look at me" factor here whatsoever.Same goes for the iPhone and iPod (literally everyone I know has one or the other or both).
Please. There isn't a consumer product on earth this week with more look at me factor than the ipad. Sure in a couple of years it'll be like the iphone where tons of people have them. But today, it's the king of look at me. And that's great. I love Apple for that.J
Why is it "look at me" though, J? I don't really think the iPad/Apple lovers think of it like that. Why would it irk non-iPad owners so much? I also have a $1500 laptop by Apple. Does that irk people too or more?
Because it's the coolest hottest product out there right now. People love showing it off. Again, THAT IS NOT BAD. Look at otis' thread pimping it here. That's a perfect example. You're looking at it negatively and I don't see that all. I don't think it irks people. I think apple fans love showing off their apple products. How many Dell stickers do you see on cars? None. How many apples? A lot more. It's not bad. It's good.J
Considering the extreme/irrational negative opinions coming through this and other threads, I have to assume it irks people. People like their Apple products. People like their BMWs. Why the hate from others? I think you said Otis had been stirring the pot earlier and that he should have expected this reaction -- but what's the big deal? He's excited about an exciting product. Doing the opposite, as many have done in here though? I don't get it.
Extreme/Irrational negative opinion of it? The worse I've seen is that it's a big Touch. That doesn't seem Extreme or Irrational.

Your little Q and A session was a perfect example of what I was talking about. Your recent questions with the real battery life and the ratio of the screen are just as ridiculous. Why are you trying to kill the iPad? You won't -- it's too good. Just stop now.

Chunky soup, I'd ask you what I asked otis.If they offered two versions of the macbook - 1 normally branded and other one black with zero branding or any way to know it was a macbook. How do you think the sales breakdown would be?What if they did the same for a Dell laptop? How would it differ?J
Personally when I was younger I would have bought the Apple branded one because that's the hip company. Now that I'm older I'd like to say I wouldn't but if they were identical I'd still by the Apple for the branding.

If you're saying they're here to pick a fight because some of us were excited about the product and are enjoying the product, then I guess it makes sense. Still seems silly to me, and I'm still not sure what they're getting out of it. But I guess that's their call.
Why is it that I can't read this and not think about the "Gran Torino" thread and laugh?
Otis Non-Apple-fanbois are trying to save you fools money here. Don't hate on the guy for caring about his iFriends.
See how that works? It seems rather hyproctirical to whine to Joe about something you do on a fairly regular basis dontcha think?
What's with you guys? I haven't "whined to Joe" once about anything. Lots of creative thinking happening in here, but it's pretty disjointed from reality.
I think they confused you with someone else.

What is everyone's experience with battery life so far? Please give real insight not just it's great!!The three people I know that have them keep the screen at maximum brightness and are not getting the 10hrs. They are estimating around 6 to 7 max. Of course they are playing with it heavily (movies & games) so that makes a difference but I am curious what others are getting.
:thumbup:The battery is great. Getting 10+ hours on web. Getting near that on other stuff. Please stop your thoughtless bashing tia.
No bashing simply stating what I've been told. I've been using the two here at the office since they got them on Monday so I could get a good fell for them.So your getting the spec on Web? Other stuff? what is other stuff? How many page loads. They've set it up on the desk at work and ran movies and played games and did not get more than 7 hours. Like I stated that is with the screen turned to full brightness the way they prefer it. What brightness level is yours set on? What type of e-mail pull/push are you using? Just like a guy a little up the thread stated he has a chess game that drains his iPhone quicker than other apps.

Why get the outdated Ipad when you can get the 3G soon? Looks like they are going to announce it in a few week.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/03/apple-s...rides-a-segway/
Can someone explain to me what benefits you get with 3G?
You dont have to search for a wifi connection.I find I use the 3G on my iphone much more than the wifi (in the car, on the bus/train, out at random restaurants, etc).

I wouldn't buy the non-3G version, personally.
jailbreak the iphone and make it a wifi hotspot. save the money versus the 3G version and the monthly data plan.
I couldn't justify the 3g, as if i am out and about, I am most likely using the iphone 3G... not carrying the pad...
This makes a lot of sense. I tethered the iPad to the sprint network via a Pre with great success. Good speed and no hiccups at all. Just a reminder to those that don't buy the 3g when you are running the iPad tethered through a phone the battery on the phone is going to drain quickly. So it's better to have it close to an outlet so you can charge. In fact I had one phone that even if it was plugged in would be drained quicker than it could charge it.

Really. Asking questions about it is irrational and extreme? Especially questions based on using the device.Says a lot about the people in this thread.

What's so special about the GUI? Isn't just a bunch of icons dropped all over the place?
Yes, just a bunch of icons dropped all over.

The iPad and devices like it are the breakthrough platform that will eventually solve both of those problems. An embedded OS is very easy to use and requires minimal maintenance. It simplifies the use of the device for those who have never really used a computer. If you've never gotten used to traditional computing paradigms, replacing a mouse cursor with a touchscreen and a keyboard with a visual representation of one makes perfect sense.
This makes no sense to me especially the keyboard part. It's harder to teach someone to type on a keyboard than a interface that looks like a keyboard? Not to mention the keyboard re sizes elements on the screen or covers them up. Makes no sense but I suppose it is easier to teach someone to type on-screen than on a keyboard.
The on-screen keyboard does substantially reduce the viewable size of the screen. But my thinking is that the standard computer keyboard has been around and easily accessible since the late 70s on PCs of various types. Anyone who hasn't gotten used to using one by now is probably so far off the grid that they would have to learn typing from scratch anyway. Typewriters have been as dead as Dillinger since the early 90s, so the Venn diagram of touch typists and computer users will be almost perfectly aligned. The point is that anyone who isn't capable of operating a full-blown PC is very unlikely to be a touch typist, and if they're not a touch typist, they would have no expectations about keyboarding, no need for a tactile keyboard, and nothing to "unlearn". The onscreen keyboard of a tablet seems tailor made for someone getting used to using a computing device. The real beauty of a touchscreen keyboard is that it's software -- it *generally* appears when you need it and disappears when you don't. And like most software, it will get better at detecting when it's really needed as it's revised over time. I definitely wouldn't want to type War and Peace on a touchscreen keyboard, but I'm pretty far from the market that these devices are aimed at. And that's kinda my point.

Another real benefit of not having a keyboard is that it removes a major (and very common) failure point for laptops, namely spilling drinks into the keyboard. You would *really* have to have a grudge against an iPad (or a huge crush on it, I suppose) in order to get any meaningful liquid into it. And since the hard drive has also been replaced with SSD Flash (and maybe real RAM eventually, if the price gets low enough), you are left with a device that has practically *zero* mechanical parts to fail. I guess you could probably wear out the orientation switch or the center button if you were really dedicated. But the device itself would probably become obsolete long before any of its mechanical parts wear out.

I still don't see anything irrational or extreme about that. How would you describe it?

Yeah, the entire intuitive GUI that people fell in love with since the iPhone came out is just a bunch of icons. And they're just dropped all over the place.

One of the problems I see with what otherwise seems like a nice device, is the fact they are using mobile Safari still, which doesn't allow you the ability to check a certificates details. So when you go to a secure site you are at the mercy of the "seal" on the site and you can't verify the details of the installed certificate. I'd hope they change this soon considering this device is mainly used for browsing.

Well, Well look at this. Of course I was just bashing. Funny how experience with the device tells you something. Then again I'm trying to be helpful and informative to those reading the thread.

Ars

Heavy 3D games seem to get around six hours of battery life at full brightness, while less graphically intensive games can go for longer. In short, you can get at least six hours of continuous use out of the iPad in the very worst case scenario (constant gaming and video playback on full brightness), and much more if you dim the screen and take breaks.

That was with WiFi on and things like e-mail running in the background, with the very occasional non-video task. 9 hours is not quite the advertised 10, but for full brightness,

Once again describe how they are laid out? How they are added to the pages?

Will it ever be able to run other browsers? That is a pretty big deal to me.I see this is primarily a browsing device. If that's the case, the browsing experience is better if have all my bookmarks synched and have the same plugins etc that I have on chrome or firefox. (like my netbook)Possible?J

For those of you asking about outside reading.

ArsDepending on the lighting conditions, reflections or fingerprints on the glossy screen may seriously hurt the reading experience. This becomes especially acute in bright sunlight—the device was unreadable when the screen was in the sun, but, with its back to the sun, the glass reflected my brightly lit face. It's possible to find an angle that more-or-less works in most environments, but you can't randomly pick how you sit or position the device.

Of course they will be cheaper and faster in a year, Walt. Like everything else in this world.

iPad = computer != laptopHTH
you are comparing it to a computer price wise, but want nothing to do with comparing its functionality. Gotcha.
Sure, I'll take a link if you're got one.

This could be pretty frustrating.

The iPad doesn't always charge when plugged into my Mac Pro (via the USB port on an Apple Cinema Display). I plugged it in this morning at 49%. When I checked 2 hours later, the battery was at 63%, but the status said "Not Charging."

You have an iPad? Congrats. As for the charging woes, you should really charge via outlet. The device needs a lot of power.

Sorry. Was talking to someone and did not quote it. This is once again from Ars. I have two I play with here are work.

Careful, you'll be accused of exaggerating...just like I was about the wi-fi issue (which has proven to be pretty major at this point). Of course, no one in the FFA who bought one has had ANY of these issues, it's just the rest of the world.

HP iPad killer

Looking at the (purported) spec sheet, the Slate appears to have a series of enticing features that are missing on the iPad. There's the camera, of course, and we're not just talking one but two: a 3MP lens in back and a front-facing VGA camera for video conferencing. We've also got a single USB 2.0 port, an SD card reader, a "conventional" SIM tray for 3G networking, and HDMI-out video capabilities (not to mention 1080p playback) via the Slate's dock connector. (Each of these key points are highlighted on the leaked marketing sheet as an "HP advantage," by the way.)

The black borders around that screen are horrendous. And is it made of glass? I'd hate to drop that thing.I wonder if it blends...

I know. When I noted that the battery life was 6-7 hrs on full brightness playing games I was called a basher. Then I found the Ars review stating the exact thing.

Not going to be an iPad killer.1. No apple logo

2. Heavy. The iPad still needs to shave off weight to be a reading option in my opinion.

3. Will not be marketed as much as the iPad. You've seen the iPad commercial right? Is that iPad on a stand to keep it solid.

Interesting, I thought you'd take a different approach. You're not talking about the glass (which you complained about for the iPad), the price-point (as high as iPad) or the 5 hours of battery life (I think you complained about the iPads 7 hrs when video gaming heavily; although gets 10+ for web browsing and supposedly around 10 for video). It also will not look great in the sun, something you complained about regarding the iPad.

I simply stated the three main reasons I saw it would not be an iPad killer. Everything I said about the iPad standds for this device but the glass screen was never a complaint against the iPad but the absurdity of the test.1. I never complained about the glass screen. I simply stated all glass screens will break if dropped on the floor repeatedly.

2. I did not complain about the 6-7hrs battery life we saw. I stated that's what we were seeing in the office and the circumstances. You then called me a basher and with out having run the scenario to see where I was coming from. I simply asked what others were seeing. To bad you can be informative rather posting useless stuff such as this.

3. Of course it won't and I'd never have it out in the sun reading because it's to heavy in the first place.

There's a story on consumerist stating that a user HAD to have a pc with iTunes to activate his iPad.

This seems silly if true. Shouldn't you be able to use the device with out having a PC at all? Isn't that kinda the point of it?

Apparently it was. Just a second or so really? The story states it was at least 4 minutes to grab the downloads.

it's not a big deal.. but honestly it IS annoying.. we don't use our PC at home for anything other than Itunes / ipod/ iphone / ipad management now...

seems rather 20th century .. requiring a desktop app, to manage your portable devices.. Point ANDROID...
