Please. There isn't a consumer product on earth this week with more look at me factor than the ipad. Sure in a couple of years it'll be like the iphone where tons of people have them. But today, it's the king of look at me. And that's great. I love Apple for that.J

Considering the extreme/irrational negative opinions coming through this and other threads, I have to assume it irks people. People like their Apple products. People like their BMWs. Personally when I was younger I would have bought the Apple branded one because that's the hip company. Now that I'm older I'd like to say I wouldn't but if they were identical I'd still by the Apple for the branding.

What is everyone's experience with battery life so far? Please give real insight not just it's great!!The three people I know that have them keep the screen at maximum brightness and are not getting the 10hrs. They are estimating around 6 to 7 max. Of course they are playing with it heavily (movies & games) so that makes a difference but I am curious what others are getting.

The battery is great. Getting 10+ hours on web. Getting near that on other stuff. Please stop your thoughtless bashing tia.

Other stuff? what is other stuff? How many page loads.They've set it up on the desk at work and ran movies and played games and did not get more than 7 hours. Like I stated that is with the screen turned to full brightness the way they prefer it. What brightness level is yours set on? What type of e-mail pull/push are you using? Just like a guy a little up the thread stated he has a chess game that drains his iPhone quicker than other apps.

Can someone explain to me what benefits you get with 3G?

You dont have to search for a wifi connection.I find I use the 3G on my iphone much more than the wifi (in the car, on the bus/train, out at random restaurants, etc).

I wouldn't buy the non-3G version, personally.

jailbreak the iphone and make it a wifi hotspot. save the money versus the 3G version and the monthly data plan.

This makes a lot of sense. I tethered the iPad to the sprint network via a Pre with great success. Good speed and no hiccups at all. Just a reminder to those that don't buy the 3g when you are running the iPad tethered through a phone the battery on the phone is going to drain quickly. So it's better to have it close to an outlet so you can charge. In fact I had one phone that even if it was plugged in would be drained quicker than it could charge it.

The iPad and devices like it are the breakthrough platform that will eventually solve both of those problems. An embedded OS is very easy to use and requires minimal maintenance. It simplifies the use of the device for those who have never really used a computer. If you've never gotten used to traditional computing paradigms, replacing a mouse cursor with a touchscreen and a keyboard with a visual representation of one makes perfect sense.

This makes no sense to me especially the keyboard part. It's harder to teach someone to type on a keyboard than a interface that looks like a keyboard? Not to mention the keyboard re sizes elements on the screen or covers them up. Makes no sense but I suppose it is easier to teach someone to type on-screen than on a keyboard.

The on-screen keyboard does substantially reduce the viewable size of the screen. But my thinking is that the standard computer keyboard has been around and easily accessible since the late 70s on PCs of various types. Anyone who hasn't gotten used to using one by now is probably so far off the grid that they would have to learn typing from scratch anyway. Typewriters have been as dead as Dillinger since the early 90s, so the Venn diagram of touch typists and computer users will be almost perfectly aligned. The point is that anyone who isn't capable of operating a full-blown PC is very unlikely to be a touch typist, and if they're not a touch typist, they would have no expectations about keyboarding, no need for a tactile keyboard, and nothing to "unlearn". The onscreen keyboard of a tablet seems tailor made for someone getting used to using a computing device.The real beauty of a touchscreen keyboard is that it's software -- it *generally* appears when you need it and disappears when you don't. And like most software, it will get better at detecting when it's really needed as it's revised over time. I definitely wouldn't want to type War and Peace on a touchscreen keyboard, but I'm pretty far from the market that these devices are aimed at. And that's kinda my point.

Another real benefit of not having a keyboard is that it removes a major (and very common) failure point for laptops, namely spilling drinks into the keyboard. You would *really* have to have a grudge against an iPad (or a huge crush on it, I suppose) in order to get any meaningful liquid into it. And since the hard drive has also been replaced with SSD Flash (and maybe real RAM eventually, if the price gets low enough), you are left with a device that has practically *zero* mechanical parts to fail. I guess you could probably wear out the orientation switch or the center button if you were really dedicated. But the device itself would probably become obsolete long before any of its mechanical parts wear out.

One of the problems I see with what otherwise seems like a nice device, is the fact they are using mobile Safari still, which doesn't allow you the ability to check a certificates details. So when you go to a secure site you are at the mercy of the "seal" on the site and you can't verify the details of the installed certificate. I'd hope they change this soon considering this device is mainly used for browsing.

Heavy 3D games seem to get around six hours of battery life at full brightness, while less graphically intensive games can go for longer. In short, you can get at least six hours of continuous use out of the iPad in the very worst case scenario (constant gaming and video playback on full brightness), and much more if you dim the screen and take breaks.

That was with WiFi on and things like e-mail running in the background, with the very occasional non-video task. 9 hours is not quite the advertised 10, but for full brightness,

For those of you asking about outside reading.

ArsDepending on the lighting conditions, reflections or fingerprints on the glossy screen may seriously hurt the reading experience. This becomes especially acute in bright sunlight—the device was unreadable when the screen was in the sun, but, with its back to the sun, the glass reflected my brightly lit face. It's possible to find an angle that more-or-less works in most environments, but you can't randomly pick how you sit or position the device.

You're not talking about the glass (which you complained about for the iPad), the price-point (as high as iPad) or the 5 hours of battery life (I think you complained about the iPads 7 hrs when video gaming heavily; although gets 10+ for web browsing and supposedly around 10 for video). It also will not look great in the sun, something you complained about regarding the iPad.

I simply stated the three main reasons I saw it would not be an iPad killer. Everything I said about the iPad standds for this device but the glass screen was never a complaint against the iPad but the absurdity of the test.1. I never complained about the glass screen. I simply stated all glass screens will break if dropped on the floor repeatedly.

2. I did not complain about the 6-7hrs battery life we saw. I stated that's what we were seeing in the office and the circumstances. You then called me a basher and with out having run the scenario to see where I was coming from. I simply asked what others were seeing. To bad you can be informative rather posting useless stuff such as this.

There's a story on consumerist stating that a user HAD to have a pc with iTunes to activate his iPad.

This seems silly if true. Shouldn't you be able to use the device with out having a PC at all? Isn't that kinda the point of it?

Yes, initial setup you had to connect it to iTunes for around one second or so. Is it really a big deal? Jesus.

I can see a lot of people cashing in their social security money to buy one of these as their first computer to look at pics of their grandkids. Guess they will have to wait for little Billy to come over with his laptop to use it.

it's not a big deal.. but honestly it IS annoying.. we don't use our PC at home for anything other than Itunes / ipod/ iphone / ipad management now...

seems rather 20th century .. requiring a desktop app, to manage your portable devices.. Point ANDROID...
