iPad (3 Viewers)

There's a story on consumerist stating that a user HAD to have a pc with iTunes to activate his iPad.

This seems silly if true. Shouldn't you be able to use the device with out having a PC at all? Isn't that kinda the point of it?

Consumerist
:bye: Yes, initial setup you had to connect it to iTunes for around one second or so. Is it really a big deal? Jesus.
Apparently it was. Just a second or so really? The story states it was at least 4 minutes to grab the downloads.
FOUR MINUTES!!!11**That's to download the latest version of iTunes. There's not much that happens with the device. I think it took 30 seconds.

It didn't upset me.

The time I was simply poking fun at CS. Should you have to use the PC at all? Why the need? Wouldn't it be wiser to use the wi-fi connection to update/activate?

Does this also mean that any new upgrades will require a PC?

Of course not. It wouldn't upset me either. It would upset the person that doesn't own/have access to a pc and gets that thing home from BB only to find they have a device they can't use until they find someone with a pc and itunes. As it was for that person in that story.

As people are saying, the ipad shouldn't be considered a computer replacement since you need a real computer to hook it up to to use it to full capacity. ipad is primarily a media consumption device and it excels at that.

When people say that the ipad is a giant ipod touch, they're 100% correct. This is terrible or awesome depending on who you are.

This would be my dream tablet (for now): http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/06/icds-te...omplete-tablet/

In terms of hardware specs and capabilities, this is something I could use to totally replace my laptop. I already know the software won't be as polished as the ipad and that's the genius or bane of Apple, depending on how you think of them.

Apple never tries to throw everything and the kitchen sink in their products. They really limit hardware specs/options but what they do include they execute really really well. The other thing is that while the hardware options are limited (no usb, no webcam, no sdhc, etc.), the actual build quality is usually top notch.

The main reason people will love the ipad is the same reason they love their iphones, the software. It's entirely about the software. Android is getting close but it's not there yet (I'm a big Android fan) and no one else is close.

Even if you hate the ipad or Apple as a whole, you gotta be thankful. Our current generation of smartphones wouldn't be the way they are without the iphone. You wouldn't see the slew of new tablets coming out this year if Apple wasn't making the ipad.

I'm not an ipad owner (yet), but I'm really glad this is out there.

While I have no dog in this fight, I think it's an ok product but don't see the need FOR ME, yes I have used one,

I do think that it is kind of "dumb" that you need another PC to set it up. They should be able to do it through an app or something ;)

HP iPad killer

Looking at the (purported) spec sheet, the Slate appears to have a series of enticing features that are missing on the iPad. There's the camera, of course, and we're not just talking one but two: a 3MP lens in back and a front-facing VGA camera for video conferencing. We've also got a single USB 2.0 port, an SD card reader, a "conventional" SIM tray for 3G networking, and HDMI-out video capabilities (not to mention 1080p playback) via the Slate's dock connector. (Each of these key points are highlighted on the leaked marketing sheet as an "HP advantage," by the way.)
RIP Amazon:1994 - 12:28pm 4/7/2010

exactly - the ipad is an accessory for your computer. A fun accessory - yes.Not sure why folks are making comparisons to computers in here - both financially and function wise.

Yep, and this is why I can't justify buying one (yet). It's not that $500 is overly expensive for what it does, it's just redundant. I have a touch and a laptop so the ipad would be a convenience only. If I had neither, I'd scoop this up.Regarding the HP Slate, the initial specs made me excited, but I don't know how the software/UI is going to be. It's going to be running Win7 (which I love), but I don't know how they're optimizing it for tablets. If it's more desktopish than tabletish, it's gonna bomb. I really think a tablet UI has to be made from the ground up. Other than the Tegra 2 Android tablet, I'm also looking forward to Microsoft's Courier. http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=courier&...nType=wl-gadget

I'm in the same camp. I played around with one for a while at the Apple store today... it's pretty neat but it just doesn't wow me to the point that I think I need to buy one right now. Maybe we'll look at it again when the wife's laptop craps out since she's a pretty casual user, but I do too much actual computing (and gaming :nerd: ) on my laptop to replace it with an over-sized iPod Touch.

Of course not. It wouldn't upset me either. It would upset the person that doesn't own/have access to a pc and gets that thing home from BB only to find they have a device they can't use until they find someone with a pc and itunes. As it was for that person in that story.

People who assume the IPad is a PC are SOOL and don't feel sorry for them. Hell, Apple doesn't even say the IPAD is a personal computer so if people are duped into thinking the IPAD comes close to what a laptop can do then don't cry when you finally realize that you need your laptop for the number of things that your IPad device can't do.

Well Otis seems to think so and sure many others who have one also agree. It's impossible to just have an IPad and get by. It's a device, even Apple calls it so on their site.

Interesting read on how a reviewer used his ipad. Unfortunately I spend 10 hours a day at the office and I switch my phone off on weekends. How kids interact with the ipad is spot on tho. My 5 year old loves it and is a pro.
"A little girl ignores the rare green snake in the cage to watch the YouTube video playing on the iPad, of the very same animal feeding. She's fascinated by it and not the real viper."Is this what we are becoming? Pretty sad image in my mind.

You're right, any tablet coming out this year has been in development for awhile. A lot of companies who had only passive interest in tablets are taking it serious now tho because of Apple. For good or bad, every single tablet is going to be compared to the ipad. JooJoo had terrible timing. I've read the reviews and yeah it sucks, but I think reviews would be a bit better if it was the only tablet available and wasn't being compared to the ipad.

The Notion Ink Adam does look promising also, totally forgot about that one.

Interesting sales #. I didn't think CA would be that much higher than everyone else but I guess it makes sense with all the tech companies.

the ars technica review states that you can get the ipad activated at an apple store.. you don't HAVE to go thru via itunes...

Wi-Fi Issues

Here it is

Also who in here is posting on the Apple site.

P.S. At least some users have also reported some success in fixing the issue by simply turning up the brightness on their iPad (of all things), but Apple doesn't seem to be recommending that as a solution

Lots of jokes on the nerd boards about the irony of having to have a tablet PC to activate an ipad. Seems to be the ipad meme of the moment.

Cause Jobs/Apple doesn't call it a computer and rightfully so.

If this isn't a computer, then the computers that control the stock exchange, airplanes, your car, and NASA aren't computers either.

What's the endgame on this fishing trip? If it's not a computer, do you win?
