I got to play with one today. I like the feel and the size. I think this type of device will be a big force in the marketplace. However, I do not think the iPad will be my choice, same form factor and touch screen with a Windows OS that allows me to do all the things I do with my PC for work would get me to buy it.
I am not an Apple hater, just this device isn't for me.

Really? There are android tablets/phones/music players that don't require you to transfer music from another source to it's harddrive?

Really this is a mistake? It's inevitable. If Joe Blow is going to buy a laptop tomorrow he's probably going to check out the IPAD too and see if that has the functionality he is looking for.Many people will not carry around a laptop and a tablet, its going to be one or the other, comparing them is exactly what it is going to happen.

I agree that this is purely marketing.What exactly is a computer? My uncle thinks a computer is something you log onto to surf porn sites and check email.If the tablet can do the same thing, that's a computer too him.Not everyone is going to be running some kind of CAD program where they need more functionality. A computer has different meanings to different people and if you think a TABLET and a laptop don't cross over as the same thing for a lot of people, you are mistaken.On top of that, Apple is going to improve the functionality on these IPADs as new generations are released. They are going to get closer and closer to what your definition of "computer" is. Perhaps someday there won't be all that much difference at all.

Some might. I think people underestimate how many people will own both. Just as some people own a big tv for the living room and a smaller one for the bedroom. The IPad is a "computer", but it will only incidentally compete in the computer market space, just as the IPhone is a "computer" that doesn't compete directly with laptops for the most part. Where I think most detractors on this board are getting it wrong is in their insistence that consumers want the expanded choice of a full laptop but will be "brainwashed" by Apple marketing. I think Apple spends a lot of time actually researching a market before creating a product. And this product has been speculated about for years. It seems reasonable to me to conclude that Apple did a lot of research to create a personal media appliance to serve a market that consumers told them they wanted to have served. As many have pointed out, it isn't surprising at all that the eventual product is locked down. Apple has locked down their products pretty severely at least since the MacIntosh. And for at least that long some advocates have praised Apple products' more polished design and ease of use. These two observations are not unrelated.

My parents (who I bought ipads for) consider it a computer.
I don't consider it a computer, like I don't consider my Touch or smartphone a computer.
In the end, who cares if it's doing what you want it to do?

And.. I must say that HP struggles to make decent laptops. I loathe to see how poorly constructed an glitchy this Tablet will be. Again, one only need look at HPs massive failures i the touchscreen PC market to get a glimpse of the likely future. Not saying it's a sure fail, but I will be amazed if it runs half as smoothly as the iPad.
For me, I have no use for 1080p out of my tablet (I run MiniDV>HDMI out of my macbook pro for that). I had no need for a 3MP digital camera (got one on my phone). I have a slight need for the SD card reader on occasion but Apple has easy to use adapters for that.
In exchange for having to slip those adapters into my carrying case when I think I might need them, I'm rewarded with what is LIKELY (not guaranteed but likely) to be a much smoother, more intuitive interface and user experience. I'm also rewarded with significantly greater battery life and a cheaper 3G Data plan. Additionally, it is turnkey as it neatly integrates perfectly with my establshed media storage/distribution system on my home network.
Not saying those features should/do appeal to everyone, but they work best for me

Until the IPad can do everything a laptop can do then yes it's a big mistake to compare a device from a laptop.

Exactly, like their Ipod it makes zero sense to buy their first model.
I can surf the net anywhere and can pop in any DVD movie on my laptop, both of which are impossible with the IPad. Also have more power and can easily print and pull up multiple tabs on one browser page, etc. Ipad is limited compared to an average laptop. Perhaps it'll get better and more flexible and certainly it'll be worth buying.

Think different.
Call it "marketing" if you will, but it is about managing consumer expectations. To call it a "computer" puts the focus on all the things it doesn't do, instead of keeping the focus on the things it does incredibly well (internet, games, music, movies... ect). Apple didn't design this to be a full-fledged computer. Tablet computers have been around for a decade and are a massive failure as a hardware platform. People don't want to work on them day in and day out. Apple easily could have dropped OS X into this form factor and made an Apple Tablet. From the beginning that wasn't their intention. Instead they created a "casual" device that doesn't do everything but does what it does better than anything like it.

So what cases did people buy? I am using the incase convertible jacket; while i love it I'm not convinced the faux leather will hold up.

As for the certificates, when people start getting fished by sites and having identities stolen because of fake or self signed certs then people will care.

Well I'm not anti apple but I don't their products are not my taste. Especially after the last IPOD disaster where the screen broke after 14 months.The products are usually very good and put together but I don't prefer their "style" or setup.I bought a creative vision zen W a while back mostly for video because I don't listen to music really and could not have been happier. However now my commute is all drive and I don't really travel so my toys are really just down to my smartphone, which is fine by me. The Ipad is a nice "whatever you want to call it" I just can't see plunking down that money for another "toy" that does what my stuff already does. Maybe down the line it'll get me wanting to read again but for now I don't get it. SO the gap from the top PC manufacturer (who was "Poor" last year) behind Apple is actually Twice as large as the grouping of First to last place PC Manufacturers. That says volumes, I think.
Look at the Consumer Reviews at CNET of HP's Touchsmart series. Typically in the 2-3 star range with one desktop system in the 4 star area. The biggest complaints are with HPs tendency to load their systems with bloatware. Coincidentally that is the BEST way to ensure a Tablet will perform poorly. Unless HP has learned some serious lessons and made tremendous strides in the last half year or year with regards to their portable touchscreen devices, this Slate is bound to be a disappointment and fraught with issues.
Just sayin... it's possible they've turned it around but I'm not holdin my breath

There are a lot of people looking at a 911 Turbo and saying" Yeah but it can't drive through 3' of water or Over 18" Boulders." No ####. It's made to go fast and handle fantastically... and look good while doing it.
Sure.. someone might come along that makes a Subaru Wagon that can go pretty fast, handle fairly well...fun thru 1' of water, and drive over 9" rocks... and some people will want that, while most will still prefer the 911 Turbo, all other things (price) being equal.
But as of now, people are holding this up against some ridiculous standard that is offered up by what product?

any buzz on allowing multiple users in the iPad OS?
(ie. on our desktop/laptop Macs, the Mrs and I have separate browsers: 1 for me logged into my yahoo/gmail/etc accounts and 1 for her)
On the iPad, there's ONE web browser so hopefully they'll sort out multiple users in the new OS.
btw, I plan on owning an iPad in the next week or 2. Just a perfect surfing/emailing on the couch device to replace our old laptop that we basically use for the same exact thing.

In 2010 they made a rather significant jump from perennial cellar dweller to "Good" in 2nd place behind (you guessed it) Apple.
