I just put my finger on what I'm seeing in this thread. There are a lot of people looking at a 911 Turbo and saying" Yeah but it can't drive through 3' of water or Over 18" Boulders." No ####. It's made to go fast and handle fantastically... and look good while doing it. Sure.. someone might come along that makes a Subaru Wagon that can go pretty fast, handle fairly well...fun thru 1' of water, and drive over 9" rocks... and some people will want that, while most will still prefer the 911 Turbo, all other things (price) being equal. But as of now, people are holding this up against some ridiculous standard that is offered up by what product? Yes. From the very outset the few people posting about this that weren't going for shtick or just trying to get a reaction stressed the "it's not a laptop". And it's not. It's designed for a different experience.Your analogy would be better if it were comparing a $50,000 Mercedes convertible to a $50,000 Mercedes SUV. They are excellent devices for certain tasks. But while one may do lots of things well, one does a few things extremely well.For some people, doing lots of things is more attractive. For others, excelling at a few things is more attractive. I agree that this is purely marketing.What exactly is a computer?

My uncle thinks a computer is something you log onto to surf porn sites and check email.

Not everyone is going to be running some kind of CAD program where they need more functionality. A computer has different meanings to different people and if you think a TABLET and a laptop don't cross over as the same thing for a lot of people, you are mistaken.

On top of that, Apple is going to improve the functionality on these IPADs as new generations are released. They are going to get closer and closer to what your definition of "computer" is. Perhaps someday there won't be all that much difference at all.

Call it "marketing" if you will, but it is about managing consumer expectations. To call it a "computer" puts the focus on all the things it doesn't do, instead of keeping the focus on the things it does incredibly well (internet, games, music, movies... ect). Apple didn't design this to be a full-fledged computer. Tablet computers have been around for a decade and are a massive failure as a hardware platform. People don't want to work on them day in and day out. Apple easily could have dropped OS X into this form factor and made an Apple Tablet. From the beginning that wasn't their intention. Instead they created a "casual" device that doesn't do everything but does what it does better than anything like it.

How can you say incredibly well with only WIFI and no DVD player.. it's more limiting at this point. Now, get 3G with jailbreak capabilities then it becomes a much better toy. Apply products when jailbroken are much better which is funny if you think about it.

I think everyone knows that sometime soon, there will we zero need for DVD drives. Apple wants to be ahead of the curve, so they toss this device out there, which may limit capability right now, but possess something (or nothing in this case) that is inevitable.

I like Oat but for someone who has an Ipad he sure doesn't say much in terms of specifics on how magical it is. It wasn't long when he was wondering why he needed this but that's what makes Apple great, they can convince people to buy in.I'll be shocked if the next or third gen IPad isn't light years better. Look at the Ipod. My friend got one then I got the next generation with the scroll wheel. His sucked at that point and went out and bought the new one since his looked so outdated.

Doesn't make sense for Apple to blow their wad when they know a certain segment will always upgrade and get the new one.

WIFI only is an absolute killer but interested to see their 3G service and more importantly how it'll be jailbroken.

Not everyone needs this. I plan on using my iPad either at home or somewhere with a wifi spot 99% of the time. If I find later that I really need the 3G then I'll upgrade later but at this point I'm fairly certain I won't need 3G.

3 HP laptops total over the last 6 years - not one issue

HP's rating for 2009 (and several years prior) was "Poor" on Forrester Research's "Customer Experience Rating". In 2010 they made a rather significant jump from perennial cellar dweller to "Good" in 2nd place behind (you guessed it) Apple. How were they spread out in 2010, this banner year for HP?

1ST: Apple 78

2ND: HP 71 (last year: 64)

LAST: Dell 67

SO the gap from the top PC manufacturer (who was "Poor" last year) behind Apple is actually Twice as large as the grouping of First to last place PC Manufacturers. That says volumes, I think.

Look at the Consumer Reviews at CNET of HP's Touchsmart series. Typically in the 2-3 star range with one desktop system in the 4 star area. The biggest complaints are with HPs tendency to load their systems with bloatware. Coincidentally that is the BEST way to ensure a Tablet will perform poorly. Unless HP has learned some serious lessons and made tremendous strides in the last half year or year with regards to their portable touchscreen devices, this Slate is bound to be a disappointment and fraught with issues.

IF I were to get an iPad I would get the largest capacity Wifi and tether it to my iPhone.Agreed that people buying 1st gen devices are not getting the best value, I think that is what the majority of people (the haters) in this thread have been saying. I came in here this AM to talk about this cert issue. Does anyone know when it's suppose to be fixed? Sorry if it's already been answered. We have been instructed to block this device from any app on our network where a cert is required until it's fixed.ETA: I don't think this will be an issue for MOST of the iPad users. CT is right....they aren't going to care until it impacts them. That's the way most users are and that's completely independent of what device they are using. It is a big deal to companies though.

No personal experience yet, but Time magazine ran a review this week and the writer claimed the battery life exceeded Apple's 10 hour estimate. He ran his iPad for 11.5 hours straight, watching four full length movies (full screen), TV shows, internet... ect. So early report of one says it's doing pretty well on the battery side of things.

Isn't this sort of like not buying an iPod because it doesn't have a CD drive to play music? Apple is all about digital media. The iPad is an extension of your main media hub (your computer). You can download movies straight to the iPad via iTunes, or simply rip your DVD's just like you would a physical music CD and transfer the movie to the iPad from there.

Remember when everyone lost thier minds when the iMac came out without a Floppy Drive? ZOMG!!! NO FLOPPY DRIVE?! How will we EVER do without a FLOPPY DRIVE!!! This is commerical suicide! Nobody will ever buy a PC without a floppy drive!



I give it 2-3 years before digital delivery (PPV / Downloaded / Streamed) video content outpaces physical media on DVD. Digital Music delivery is already outpacing CD sales by an ever increasing margin. Hell the CD was dead 4 years ago when downloads had already doubled physical album sales.

The only thing holding folks back on video going the same route is broadband adoption and making the process easier for joe sixpack.

Bingo.Whole lot of dinosaurs in this thread clinging to physcial media. WIFI/4G is where it's all headed. There will be no need for physical media, or wires like USB for that matter. Give it 18 months to a year and reassess your stance on this sorta stuff....

It's basically the same browser as the iPhone, on a mobile device I can see that being overlooked as it does require more interaction with the servers and CRLs that might bloat a mobile browser, but on THIS specific device it seems like it should have been required.

That's correct, and understandable on a mobile device...although I anticipate it changing here in the near future since it seems more and more common for people to use their smart phones to do secure transactions.

For comparison sake - i have the same feed up on my laptop.The iPad - via the Masters app is about 10 seconds behind, but the video quality is much better on the ipad - the picture is a little clearer, but the stream itself is very fluid on the iPad - the laptop is a little jerky

As for the certificates, when people start getting fished by sites and having identities stolen because of fake or self signed certs then people will care.

3 HP laptops total over the last 6 years - not one issue

that a lot of computers in 6 years. Why so many if no issues?

Bought one for Mom, Dad and MeDad 5/6 years ago. Bought new one for dad 2 years ago gave old one to mom.

Bought myself one last year

I buy a new machine each year and then each one is handed down to someone in the family that needs an upgrade. so with that out of the way. They do have a point in that HP is not a very good machine.

My personnel machines in the house are a Macbook, 2 Toshibas, and an HP laptop. Asus, Toshiba, and Sony are all rated higher than Apple. Everyone saying how great Apples are remember they are barely ranked above Dell which people tend to tear on for how many problems they have. So I don't want to see you guys rip Dell. HP however I'm fine with

I just put my finger on what I'm seeing in this thread. There are a lot of people looking at a 911 Turbo and saying" Yeah but it can't drive through 3' of water or Over 18" Boulders." No ####. It's made to go fast and handle fantastically... and look good while doing it. Sure.. someone might come along that makes a Subaru Wagon that can go pretty fast, handle fairly well...fun thru 1' of water, and drive over 9" rocks... and some people will want that, while most will still prefer the 911 Turbo, all other things (price) being equal. But as of now, people are holding this up against some ridiculous standard that is offered up by what product? Oh yeah... it doesn't exist.Remember when everyone #####ed that the iPod didn't have an FM Tuner and didn't support FLAC. Remember when players came out that did all that. What happened to the iPod? Yep....

Actually, I think the issue is that a whole lot more people have use for a Subaru Wagon than they do a 911 Turbo. Except all of the 911 Turbo owners keep talking about how everyone is going to own a 911 Turbo soon because it's a total game changer, despite the fact that most people get more utility out of their cheaper Subaru Wagon. The iPad seems like a terrific media device. Almost certainly the best portable media device available. But at $500 it's a bit pricey and the average person is going to want something that does more than just media when they're looking at spending $500. The Porsche 911 Turbo is great for the people with cash to burn, but for the average consumer it's a little much.

Well I'm not anti apple but I don't their products are not my taste. Especially after the last IPOD disaster where the screen broke after 14 months.The products are usually very good and put together but I don't prefer their "style" or setup.I bought a creative vision zen W a while back mostly for video because I don't listen to music really and could not have been happier. However now my commute is all drive and I don't really travel so my toys are really just down to my smartphone, which is fine by me. The Ipad is a nice "whatever you want to call it" I just can't see plunking down that money for another "toy" that does what my stuff already does. Maybe down the line it'll get me wanting to read again but for now I don't get it. Seems like it should be closer to a 200-300 price tag IMO

Sounds like something I'd buy. I want a good e-book reader and the Android one that is out (Nook) is slow, I bought one but just don't like it. If Apple comes out with one that is quick and easy on the eyes I'd probably get it.

HP's rating for 2009 (and several years prior) was "Poor" on Forrester Research's "Customer Experience Rating". In 2010 they made a rather significant jump from perennial cellar dweller to "Good" in 2nd place behind (you guessed it) Apple. How were they spread out in 2010, this banner year for HP?

1ST: Apple 78

2ND: HP 71 (last year: 64)

LAST: Dell 67

SO the gap from the top PC manufacturer (who was "Poor" last year) behind Apple is actually Twice as large as the grouping of First to last place PC Manufacturers. That says volumes, I think.

Look at the Consumer Reviews at CNET of HP's Touchsmart series. Typically in the 2-3 star range with one desktop system in the 4 star area. The biggest complaints are with HPs tendency to load their systems with bloatware. Coincidentally that is the BEST way to ensure a Tablet will perform poorly. Unless HP has learned some serious lessons and made tremendous strides in the last half year or year with regards to their portable touchscreen devices, this Slate is bound to be a disappointment and fraught with issues.

Just sayin... it's possible they've turned it around but I'm not holdin my breath

Isn't forester the one that samples individuals on things such as is the computer enjoyable to use, etc? I'd prefer to know how many have hardware failures when discussing the quality of a machine.
