iPad (2 Viewers)

The Commish is right. HTML5 did not get developed specifically for the iPad.Otis is right. Websites are changing to be iPad friendly.
:goodposting: OK, with that settled, let's move on to the next debate:Apple is making boisterous claims of the iPad being "magical" yet I haven't been able to cast a single spell with it. Not even a simple Riddikulus, much less something useful like an Expecto Patronum or a Finite Incantatem. :coffee: APPLE LIED TO US!!!
You obviously aren't fanboy material  and the iPad senses this apparently. You appear to be SOL.

Serious question:

The two biggest gripes about this device from the outset were (1) no multitasking and (2) lack of Flash support. With the Flash issue quickly resolving itself, and Apple now releasing an updated OS that has multitasking, what will the main gripes be after that? The only one I can come up with that seems legitimate is the "no USB port" gripe. Any others?

You can add cost as a gripe when compared to more capable laptops.

Eh. That one doesn't make sense to me. An iPhone is more expensive than a "more capable laptop" too. But there's something to be said for smaller/different functionality. Compare this iPad to its peer devices -- whatever other uber mobile tablets are coming out -- and the price point starting at $499 seems reasonable. But sure, we can add it to the list.-No USB port-Cost

Biggest complaint will be that it doesn't do everything a laptop can do. Which is missing the point, of course, but people get hung up on this.

From this thread:"Certificates" "Isn't it just a big iPod?""Why is this special? isn't it just a big screen with icons placed randomly?""But the screen only looks really beautiful at 60% brightness!""Glass can break. omg."Legit things:Weird wifi issue. Until that gets fixed, that's gotta be on the list. Although I will say that I limited my router to just do G band (I don't have N). This was one of the ways to supposedly fix it and I haven't had a problem since. It's only been a few days though.And... Maybe a front facing camera, but I don't think too many really care about that. Maybe more books in their book store (although could just use Kindle app)? With Commish's superior knowledge on HTML5 and iPods with USB ports I'm sure he can help us out, however.

Anyone have any idea what these are fetching on criagslist etc? The Mrs. commented tonight, as i was trying to find a hotspot from a cab, that it is easily worth the 30 bucks a month for me to have 3G based on how much i use this thing and how often i have it with me. Im tempted to try and sell it and upgrade. Will Apple offer me a deal? Or should i just try and recoup as much as possible on the open market and then repurchase? If i had known i would use it this much, i would have waited for 3G. By the way, the scrabble game "Words with friends" is highly, highly addictive.
what's your user name? My wife plays this constantly.

After watching the video of the goofballs attacking one with a baseball bat the day it came out, I have no concerns about glass breakage.

Fair point. Most of us today have cameras in our phones that would be just as good as anything you would put in the iPad, but for video chat I can see this being an issue.

I love how the SSL issue (fixed in new OS) isn't a "legit" thing on a device designed to surf the web...I do think with the new OS there will be very few complaints outside of cost. Looks like Apple listened to the criticism and responded.

I don't want to have to swap between my phone and iPad unless I need to make a phone call. Considering how tiny and widespread cameras are, I can hardly believe they didn't include one to begin with.

I think it's been made clear I can't communicate in fanboy speak so me trying isn't worth the while. Not sure why you continue to think there are usb ports on an iPod though. Bizarre.

I think that such a small percentage of the population uses a camera for video chat, that it is sort of unnecessary. I also imagine it would be somewhat akward to have to hold the device in place while video chatting. There is no way in hell you would want to use a device as large as the ipad as a camera to take still photos.

I'd rather use it as a camera to take still photos than having to fumble around for another device. It's not that big. I wouldn't be going for a dang pulitzer prize winning photo. I just don't want to dig around for a camera.

:lmao:I havent used one, so I am only speaking of how I would imagine using it. But I'm not even sure how you would hold the thing to take a photo. Seems like trying to hold a 8x10 thing steady, while pressing a button on the touchscreen would be awkward at best.

Obviously I'm mocking you for thinking there were USB ports on the iPad. It's funny that someone who thought you needed 3G for the wifi iPad, thought you could connect a BB to a iPad/iPod via USB, thought you could do data/voice on VZW did the following:Claimed to have serious cred because of your job and the fact that you've been on a website before.Claimed to have serious financial interest. The certificate shtick. The HTML5 debacle. Questioning of Otis' (actual) credentials; ironic as seen above.FWIW, it's even more amusing that someone who kept #####ing about the pissing match in this thread is the one pissing the most.

I was going to make a comment about how reading this thread is like watching a couple of 9 year old girls having a slap fight. Then I realized how insulting that would be to all the 9 year old girls out there.

lol at "fumble around for another device." Have you ever owned a cell phone? If you're not a woman, it's in your pants pocket, and it's always about 0.2 milliseconds from your reach. Worst case scenario you're a woman and it's in your purse.

All of this. And I'm still finding it funny that the guy with some credits from Devry and the guy working at Wells Fargo (whose company has a website!) keep reminding me that I have neither the education nor the intellectual horsepower to keep up with them in here. You Hawkings need to climb out of your wheelchairs and realize that this truly isn't rocket science.

Obviously I'm mocking you for thinking there were USB ports on the iPad.
You got me...it was completely unrealistic for me to assume there was a usb port on such a device. I have no idea what I was thinking. Not sure what you are talking about regarding 3G. I asked if you had to have it, but that's about all I remember. I also asked about the "work around" for the wifi issue, but you're right...mock me, I deserve it for thinking a device like this would have a usb port.

Love this, classic Otis. Pick out a small insignificant part of someone's post and put the focus on it. You tried it earlier when you kept stating that I wrote Android apps "for a living", now you will do it with this...I'm sure you might find one or two lemmings that buy into your childish twisting, but the majority of this board laughs at you.You provide a commodity...humor, and for that we ALL thank you. Kiddo.

Buy AAPL - Here go another million iPads to the soccer moms!

Television personality Oprah Winfrey, who in the past boosted sales of the Amazon Kindle by praising it on her program, recently declared herself a fan of Apple's iPad for an audience of millions to see.

Winfrey praised the iPad, which she called "amazing," in a conversation on her show last week with tech analyst Omar Wasow. She highlighted the device's abilities as an e-reader, noting that the its touchscreen allows books to "move," and proclaimed that Apple's new hardware would "change the way kids learn."

The TV host also mentioned the Kindle when talking about the iPad, noting that the Amazon Kindle application allows users to read their books on the iPad. She said that unlike the Kindle, the iPad has a backlit screen, which allows for reading in the dark, sharing photos, and playing games like Scrabble. "Gosh, those Apple folks," she said.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the TV host even referred to her ownership of Amazon's e-reader in the past tense, stating she "had a Kindle." A spokesperson for Winfrey later clarified and said she uses both devices.

The Journal noted that Winfrey's endorsement of the Kindle in 2008 led to a flood of orders at Amazon, which had difficulty keeping up with demand for the holiday season.

Oprah's Book Club is featured on Apple's iBookstore on the iPad, where titles highlighted by the host are available for purchase. As part of the free iBooks application, the iBookstore is Apple's entrance into the e-book market, and also features the New York Times Bestsellers list.

Winfrey has partnered with Apple in the past for charity. In 2006, she, along with U2 singer Bono and a number of celebrities, took part in the (Product) Red promotion for the iPod nano. Proceeds from the device, which is still sold by Apple with the latest-generation iPod nano, support the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa. Oprah and Bono both filmed a segment at an Apple store in Chicago, Ill., to promote the cause in 2006.
I had suggested before this is probably not the best place to talk about this since a lot of close minded people muddy it up.What I have done for awhile now is buy APPL and also back it up with companies they use. Here's a recent Motley fool article talking about it. Riding apple to riches.
That's just one stock pick, hardly a list of all the vendors on there.
No it's not a list of all vendors. You have the one mentioned in the article Broadcom, honeywell, toshiba (OTC) , samsung (OTC), infinion, etc.

Maybe you're missing something. As much as you've touted your own knowledge on HTML5, that you're visited a website before, said Otis is lacking credentials, etc you've had complete debacles in here over and over. See an above post of mine where I outlined these. Maybe we need these stickied for you. These credentials or "look at me" moments made things ironic in here. In every thread it seems like you try to be this independent thinker yet you're the one looking like a fool on one side. See this thread, Maddow, etc. You didn't even see Maddow before and you were #####ing about how people who watched it were getting tricked by the media. Similarly, in this thread you've gone way beyond what you know/tried to trap Otis with your HTML5 shtick, have been called out on it, and have been spinning your wheels for around 3 pages. And no, you haven't come in for answers -- this is where your logic is flawed. You've come in here trying to answer people's problems (saying Otis should just stick his BB into his iPad), to get into slapfights (see this argument, your HTML5 debacle, or when you complained over and over that people are getting into slapfights (when this thread was going relatively OK)) or for other reasons I'm not understanding. Not sure where my post went fwiw.

And Commish, given your Christian behavior in this thread, the bible quote linked in your sig is beautifully ironic...

"Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason ... But do this with gentleness and respect,"
 Wow...what nerve did I hit?? Personal "attacks" and all...I'm so flattered.
You have to realize that's all Otis knows. I simply ignore him now since he has yet to post anything useful or even interesting.

I haven't personally attacked anyone. This whole goofball HTML5 debacle was started by The Commish, when I made a harmless comment about lots of websites gearing up to be iPad friendly, and it wasn't directed at him in any way, and he decided to try and slam me for it. Turns out he was wrong and, try as he might, he couldn't backpedal from the reality that he came out looking like he was being sort of a jerk.He and Card Trader have been quick to tell me I'm not sufficiently sophisticated to be a part of this discussion. Trust me, I get that I have the clown persona around here, and I don't usually take myself too seriously (there are plenty of people here handling that shtick), but it's funny when I'm accused of personal attacks (which are all coming from them and LokiKx).

You can continue to discredit my contributions to this thread, but I've contributed boatloads more than you have. Do you have any more funny pics of how the iPad is like a big iPhone? Christ, if you guys want to come in here and piss on a device we're interested in, that's fine with me, as long as you're at least remotely clever about it. None of you have been.

Step it up, fellas.

You keep saying this "credential" comment...why? I never claimed to know more than anyone else here.
Yes, you did. You told me I "have no clue," and touted your experience at Wells Fargo as somehow making you internet guru. It's the same shtick Card Trader pulled 10 pages ago when he told me this discussion was "over my head," but that he could handle it because he got a computer science degree from Playboy's #1 ranked party school and then took some classes at Devry.Stop backpedaling. Man up and take ownership of what you post here.

 I said to you IF you think all this html5 stuff is just coming to the surface now, you don't have a clue. And you don't if you really believe that. End of story. If you don't believe that I have no problem with you. Again, from your post, you seemed to think the craze to html5 was all because of iPad, despite the fact that html5 has been in the works for several years now, long before anyone of you had even heard of an iPad. That was my ONLY point. I have also commented to you that what you present here in technology knowledge doesn't measure up to what you say your education is. I've never said you were uneducated or not worthy of talking about these things. I never told you what I did for a living until you asked. If you didn't want to know don't ask me....that's just common sense. And I certainly never claimed that it made me an expert of any sort. I was just giving you a little bit of history around html5 and how we got to where we are today. You say you aren't making "personal attacks" which is total bull####. I tell you what....do yourself what you are asking me to do and we have a deal. Seems fair, no?

I never once said that. And yet you jumped to that conclusion, pounced on me, and sarcastically called it a "gem," and said that's the only reason you stop by this thread. Who is the buffoon here as between the two of us?
That was my ONLY point.
Well your point had nothing to do with what I said. You might want to reconsider coming in here and pouncing on someone before you read or understand what it is they have posted.
I have also commented to you that what you present here in technology knowledge doesn't measure up to what you say your education is.
Which post of mine are you referring to, which demonstrates I have limited knowledge? I'll take a link. And I don't think I've shared my education or experience with you.

I just don't want to dig around for a camera.
lol at "fumble around for another device." Have you ever owned a cell phone? If you're not a woman, it's in your pants pocket, and it's always about 0.2 milliseconds from your reach. Worst case scenario you're a woman and it's in your purse.
I wear skinny jeans. Working the phone out of my pocket is a 5 second endeavor, minimum, even if the pants are off.Is it that ridiculous of a request for a mini cam to be built into a media device? Let's say an insurance adjuster is putting an estimate together on some damage. Wouldn't it be cool if the device they're using to write up a document could also insert photos on the fly?

OtisOtisOtisBring it on.
She says she started it up

You could have clarified this a long time ago then. Who's the bafoon?? Apparently both of us. Me for continuing down the path and you for not just clarifying it at any of the times I was asking for clarification. I have nothing against you. I certainly didn't "pounce" on you. I thought your comment was your fanboy shtick and I laughed. Up to that point, that's why I was coming around. It's comical to me. I'm pretty sure you told me in one of the other tech threads that you got some sort of computer science (or computer science like) degree before going on to law school. Is that incorrect?I'd point to the whole "cert" slapfight you were in with Card Trader saying it's not a big deal was my first warning flag. Seems to me, with your background, you would understand what the issues were with self signed certs etc. I don't have a specific link at the moment...it's in this thread though.

Yes I joked about the certificate issue, and he made a big stink about that too. It was hardly a "slapfight." I just said I didn't care about it. I still don't. That the only evidence you have of my ignorance?Something like that. I'm no expert but I promise I'm every bit as qualified as you two clowns to have a discussion of consumer electronics on the internet, as are 99.9% of the posters here. So put down the "over our heads" and "don't have a clue" shticks. They're tired.

I am beginning to wonder if you can post without calling people names. It's kind of sad really. And no, it's not the only evidence. Somehow I get the feeling that it doesn't matter how many links I give you, you'll just have a smart comment for it (see above). Doubt it's worth the energy. You are probably more qualified to talk about consumer electronics than me. To be honest, I don't get geeked out over that stuff. I do like to see where things are going, but I know 99.999999999999999% of the first run stuff isn't close to something I want. Doesn't matter the vendor. I love to work on the technology that supports all these devices. That's where it's at for me. You should note, that I never made the "don't have a clue" comment about the consumer electronics...it was about the technology it runs on. Very different IMO. I'm not foolish enough to think there is a right/wrong when talking about the product. It's all opinion. With that said, you may know more than you let on. That's certainly came to my mind, but your posts don't show that to me, so I made the comment. Feel free to show me that side of you if it bothers you enough to call people names.

My biggest issue so far:

I'm on this thing way too much. With a laptop I'd get tired of it sitting on my lap and frying my balls so I would set it down and turn it off.

With the ipad its comfortable and if I set it aside but get the urge to look at something there is ZERO boot up time, I'm right back on.

I feel like ive found a companion I never get sick of and am always happy to see. I finally know what true love is.
