I was recently disappointed at finding out the itunes video restrictions that Apple has with the iPad. Apple charges more to rent a movie on the iPad than on the iPhone or on a Mac, and also Apple won't let you buy most movies on the iPad, but you can buy the same movies (through itunes) with your iphone or Mac. And then, once you rent/buy a movie on your iPad, you are not allowed to transfer it to your Mac or iphone.I was hoping to use my iPad as rear-seat entertainment video for the kids when driving, but that's proving to be more expensive than I thought it would be (having to constantly rent movies instead of buying). Handbrake works well for me, and it is free.

I use Free DVD To IPad Converter. It works great, have ripped a ton of movies and tv shows from DVD's.Just rip, place into iTunes and sync. Extremely simple.

Huh? I think you're wrong here. The only price difference I'm aware of on iTunes is that movies cost more to rent/buy in HD over standard definition. I'm comparing iTunes on my iPad to iTunes on my computer and all prices look identical. Some movies are not available for purchase in HD, but if you click the 'Standard Definition' button on the iPad you'll get the option to buy. I also think you're incorrect about not being able to sync a movie back to your Mac if you downloaded it on your iPad. That's a main iTunes/iOS selling point:

Tough decision. I ended up getting wifi-only. what kind of phone do you have? rooting an android phone (or paying $20/month) will get you a wifi hotspot that the ipad can connect through just fine.

same here. rooting is one click now (z4root if you're on the stock froyo OS). wireless tether works seamlessly with the ipad 16gb. as long as you have a charged phone (or a phone with a charger), you've got the same functionality as the 3G model without having a contract.

You're right about the pricing. I didn't notice the Standard Definition button. When I went to purchase the movie on my iPhone, maybe it defaulted to the SD setting since I don't have a HD phone. Anyway, the pricing is the same. However, as for the transferability here's a quote from the iTunes store: "Movies rented on your iPad may only be watched on your iPad - they cannot be transferred to your computer or other handheld device." Hopefully, this also doesn't apply to movies that you purchase.Thanks.

Nope, at least not for the 30 or so I have ripped. Just launch the free app, plug in a disc, select what you want to rip, and it rips it. It is a slow process but the video is crystal clear on the iPad.

Been screwing around with the wife's a bit and just took to the net with it yesterday to see what the experience was like. How the hell do I reply to threads here? I hit the "Add Reply" button, the window comes up, but no keyboard. I hit the "Fast Reply" button and the keyboard comes up briefly and then closes What the heck am I doing wrong? Incidently, Words with Friends is really fun to play

You have to tap in the text box to place the cursor and get the keyboard to come up.

Yeah....damn near broke the screen "tapping"....no dice. Are my hands/fingers too big?

I did more research on this, AirDisplay was a leader for a bit, then I found this free App which seems like it might be better than AirDisplay (since AirDisplay does not support Aero and other features plus costs like $10 I think?). They may have fixed it, but will try this when I pick up my iPad2:

It is not a bug that needs fixing. As goon said use two fingers to scroll. Works pretty well.

There is no official Facebook app for iPad. They have an iPhone app, but it just scales up 2x on the iPad. I downloaded MyPad, it's OK.

Thx for replies. I went on FB with Safari and it seems fine. I could even accept my game requests, but couldn't load games because of the absence of Flash. What is the advantage of app over browser? (BTW, the person who helped me at the Apple Store did suggest downloading an app like MyPad over the FB iPhone app.)

if you download iswifter, you should be able to play your flash games on FB.

I have never used the fbg app. I always use Safari when posting to FBG

iSwifter works for Flash games but there are commonly issues with the games not recognizing touch inputs since they were created for mouse/keyboard. Definitely better off downloading an app created specifically for the iPad if possible.

Not sure, honestly. Off the top of my head I can't think of a viable reason to not allow it. I would guess it would be added in an update eventually.

Pull up the bookmark folder you want to arrange. Click the EDIT button. Each bookmark will have an icon to the far right that looks like three horizontal lines. This is the arrange icon. Simply drag this icon up and down to move the bookmark where you want it in the list.

Flash is definitely a big problem, but it's probably about #3 on my list of gripes.

#1 - Why did apple forsake the concept of a filesystem? Sharing files between apps is a serious pain due to this. You can use stuff like drop box if the app(s) actually support that, but if not you're kind of SOL. Saving things and then putting them back to a windows file share is problematic due to this as well. I can get them off with File Browser. But getting them back after you edited with Quick Office or something means I have to save to my drop box, go into the drop box app, and tell it to copy it back to File Browser. It's really pretty horrible.

#2 - The apps on this thing kind of blow. For all the talk of flash being some gigantic security hole, Apple doesn't seem to have a problem with apps like Quick Office which shared out my files for the world on the default installation. With no security whatsoever. Just use your browser to hit port 4242, you can download any file you please and even modify and upload back if you like. Just the ones in the app itself mind you, because of problem #1. There's an option for authentication, but it's disabled by default. I got a sling DVR from Dish Network, and the ipad/iphone/ipod app for this completely suck. On my PC or the Droid I can actually do things like skip forward. I do this on the ipad app and it freezes the thing and then confuses my box. Just exiting a video can do that at times. It's not perfect on these other platforms, but it's not virtually worthless like the Apple versions. You can blame app developers for this if you like, but the fact that it works on other things makes it seem like Apple really limits what a developer can actually do.

#3 - No flash - that sucks.

I'm sure I can come up with more, like the Wifi settings completely sucking if you are using a network without a broadcast SSID. They're the only ones on the planet that seem to think it's a good idea not to cache this information in case you connect to another network and want to come back. But overall this is my list of biggest gripes after playing with it for a few weeks.

Apple is trying to introduce a new way of thinking and approaching computing. The driving vision behind the iPad is to "remove the computer" from between the user and the experience. Through touch you interact directly with the content; the hardware is supposed to be invisible. To that end, Apple re-imagined how the user deals with their documents, eliminating confusing file paths from user view.Here is an article that attempts to explain Apple's approach and may help shed a little light on the problem.

Finally starting to be some light at the end of the tunnel on this one. The fact that Apple has neglected to make this device all that corporate friendly, and has broken away from concepts like the filesystem which really limits flexibility and productivity, is spawning a new market for apps like this. Still some limitations to it, but it's finally something that can deploy file shares to a user's device in a friendly fashion.

Now I need an office app that has "Open In" functionality, and they could save it back to their shares easily too. iWork and QuickOffice don't seem to, anyone got anything that fits the bill here?

As an aside, I really wish I were a developer. Plugging holes in this device so it can fit into a corporate environment seems like a gold mine at this point. It also seems like you can make some nice coin with cheesy apps in the app store - like I mentioned at #2 on my list, most of these apps seems to suck and still sell pretty well at $3-$8 a pop. Seems like there's a whole land of opportunity here.

Is there a way to set the order of your bookmarks/folders in safari? I can't find a way to move bookmarks around other than reassigning to different folders. I'm picky about the order they show in and it's driving me nuts.

Pull up the bookmark folder you want to arrange. Click the EDIT button. Each bookmark will have an icon to the far right that looks like three horizontal lines. This is the arrange icon. Simply drag this icon up and down to move the bookmark where you want it in the list.

Splashtop Remote Desktop. It's actually on sale right now for $2.99 (regularly $9.99). Downloaded it yesterday myself. All you have to do is install their free app on your home computer, then your iPad can remotely connect and run your computer right on the iPad. Worked flawlessly for me in one small test with my Mac.

Been using wyse pocket cloud myself and connecting via rdp. All servers at work have that already, and just about every windows version should have it as an installable option. Also allows vnc and vmware view, which uses the new pcoip. Our original plans for these included vmware view for virtual desktops but that's been scrapped for now.

Nope, iPad2 isn't a huge leap which is what everyone was moaning about, but it's noticeably faster and has a couple extra bells and whistles.
