Apple's iPhone 5S and iPhone 5 both outsold Samsung's Galaxy S4 worldwide in October, says market researcher Counterpoint.

In its latest Market Pulse report released Thursday, Counterpoint said that the iPhone 5S retained its top spot for global smartphone sales in spite of supply shortages that forced customers to wait to snag the phone. As 5S supply has ramped up, the research firm expects Apple to meet even stronger demand for November and December.

The iPhone 5 took home second place in Counterpoint's rankings, leaving the Galaxy S4 in third. The iPhone 5C was No. 4, followed by Samsung's Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S3, and Galaxy S4 Mini.

Apple fared well across the world but most notably in China where its market share surged to 12 percent in October from just 3 percent in September, transforming it into the country's third largest smartphone vendor. A deal with China Mobile, which reportedly has already been reached, stands to drive up Apple's share among Chinese consumers even further.

"With a China Mobile deal on the horizon, Apple's iPhone 5S at all three [Chinese] carriers will for sure ignite a 'price war' boosting the overall iPhone 5S sales in China," Counterpoint analyst Tom Kang said in a statement. "This might allow Apple to even reach the No. 1 smartphone player in December or January in China."

Counterpoint's monthly Market Pulse report culls its sales data from surveys of major retailers and distributors across 33 countries.

Wasn't October the first full month that the iphone 5s was available for purchase? I guess I would just assume that whatever month the Galaxy S5 is released Samsung will be on top again.

Don't get me wrong, Samsung had 5 of the top 10 selling phones for the month of October so it's still impressive that apple could sell more phones with only 3 of the top 10, but I just thought that in the month of October Samsung's phones were older.

It would be a huge disappointment if the 5s wasn't #1 since it was just released. Apple and Samsung basically trade spots depending on what season it is (Galaxy spring/summer and iPhone fall/winter. The fact that the year old 5 beat out the 6 month old GS4 is somewhat impressive.

It will be 5S then S4 then 5C until Samsung comes out with the S5. Its just crazy that with all the money other companies have dumped into creating flagship phones, that no one other than Samsung has been able to compete with Apple.

Apparently I've been Logging into my desktop workstation, viewing / editing files, FTPing files, updating websites, scanning documents to PDF and sending them to clients on this iGameboy I keep in my pocket

I'm not sure I've edited a :critical: spreadsheet though

I have a Sammy GS3, and I already want to buy an unlocked Nexus 5 because I want pure Android. Sammy devices don't hold the value of a contract because they flood the market with several devices, all which still even before one year of a contract can't keep up with updates with the carriers. Mostly because of their own technology baked in the device. Simply put, my GS3 is worthless unless I can go pure Android on it, and to be able to do that, I have to break the warranty to modify the firmware. Plus, they are really cheap devices. I already got dust in the camera sensor. It makes the camera worthless. It's not on the lens. It's in the sensor.

I'm staying away from Samsung and locked carrier phones with Android from now on. I'd rather the unlocked Nexus 5 or an unlocked Moto X. For $400, and unlocked Nexus 5 is way better than an iPhone 5s due to hardware with pure Kit Kat 4.4.2 and going. The Moto X is way better than a 5c. Kit Kat is optimized for the hardware now. My GS3 would fly with it. The problem is Sammy's crap TouchWiz UI, the bloat that slows the hardware down because of frag, and just plain poor code that straps the hardware down to ride with the UI donkey. Now I have to rely on ROMs or CyanogenMod to get the full value of my device. Worst purchase I ever made through Verizon. I can toss different SIMs into the N5 with no contract. Combine that with great hardware and code being optimized for it, and Google flat out wins.

Sammy sucks. Don't ever get locked into that crap with a contract. I regret it now, and Google is going into the right direction with the OS and making it work with lesser hardware. TouchWiz is like skinning a whole OS over Linux. All Google needs to have is stylus support, and yet it still wins over Sammy, being that they are going more voice input than tactile, and then who needs a stylus? I still want it for tablets though.

iPhone anyday over Sammy. It's a better device period. Because Apple focuses on only one device. Apple has been totally myopic with it though. Google with their own hardware division and the partnership with Motorola is now their main competition. I'd rather the price per spec war than the luxury war in a handset, with it being open. Apple finally had to go with the 5c to that, and it's old spec in plastic with colors!

MY GS3 is worthless now. Thanks Sammy! I can't wait until we get past 4.1 Jelly Bean stable with a new modem! I should had waited with my old ICS pre-paid phone on low spec that ran better on a CyanMod ROM than get on Verizon with the GS3 stock with TW. I did learn more with the GS3 though. Like how you don't use a colorful wallpaper to save battery on an AMOLED screen. That you really should use Nova Launcher instead of TW to modify the screen real estate that makes widgets useful. Or that you ####can my device in 6 months while I am still under contract with it.

No, sadly this was a laptop thing. Post kept timing out. Kept refreshing the page without realizing it was the daily 3am board shutdown. Stupid bourbon.

Apparently they cache the posts somehow and they all drop in once the board is back up. I never understood why the forum has to shut down every day... Rarely up at that hour posting but it always catches me off guard when it does.

It's the daily maintenance window to scrub the 6 million post that Tim does per day. Think of it as unclogging the useless s##t from the toilet.
