Irvin/ESPN buffoons (1 Viewer)

You're not sure if this was posted or not? Are you kidding me? This is posted at least twice a week.

I think I am officially more annoyed at these threads then I am of Irvin.

What's next, a Theisman bashing thread?

Did you even read the article that he linked to? This goes beyond the same ol idiot Irvin stuff. This is whole new level of foot in mouth.

I am of the belief that the minority should be able to speak out more than the majority because by definition they are at a huge disadvantage no matter how you slice it. That being said, Irvin is an idiot! I can't believe he still has a job as he argues over everyone else and is just flat out annoying. Worse, he rarely brings any insight to the game as he doesn't objectively look at anything.

This may be the most accurate statement written here about Irvin. :goodposting:

Hopefully, and expectedly, it will go unnoticed because most tune Irvin out. Or, can't understand what comes out of his mouth. Whatever.

However, if it does gain national steam, then maybe we'll be graced by his dismissal but if so, will unfortunately have to deal with the drama that will undoubtedly precede it.

Either way, we'll still have to stomach Irvin in some capacity, good or bad.

-redjake, Irving TX.

That may be true, but I'm still trying to figure out what all of this has to do with Irving Fryar.

Amazing... but when has the networks really listened to the fans... Mike Patrick, Irvin, Shannon Sharpe, McGuire...

We need more Aikman, Young, and Faulks... and less of these bitter know-it-all farts....

It's obvious to me that ESPN hired him -- and keeps him -- because he creates controversy. He gets people talking about him and folks tune in to see what outrageous trash will come spewing out of his big mouth. (Personally, I'm also offended by his gawd-awful clothes.) And guess what: that's just what ESPN wants! I tune in to see if Tom Jackson or Mike Ditka is going to strangle him. :D

Actually I thought we were talking about Dr J. :bye: Thanks, I corrected it.

Here's the bottom line....

If a white analyst had said something similar about a black QB, this would have been a much, much bigger issue.

ESPN, IMHO has grow "too big for it's britches" as my granny said. over the last several years i find myself watching none of the networks in studio stuff, because of this over the top mentality they have acquired. they don't have commentary about things they have arguements.

and as a bonus when i watch the actual sports on the network i hit the mute button. which i gather many of you should do as well.......of course this forum would not be as funny reading about how bad the in booth people are.

agreed. Jimmy the Greek says "I'm telling you the black is the better athlete" and it was like the OJ trial riots. OK, not that bad. But you get my drift.Irvin is an ignorant idiot with big ### ties and I can't fathom how he gets caught with a weed pipe in his car and he gets away with the 'it belonged to my friend" rap. Totally absurd and inconsistent.

lol.Funny since that's why they hired Rush....who was immediately axed and further villified for FAR less racist remarks. In fact, his remarks weren't even racist (he accused others of being racist). But Irvin will get a wrist-slap at most. Wake up people; this is America. Where you been? How is it surprising that the reaction he gets from this is nothing compared to what someone would have gotten if a white guy make some similarly racist comment about a black guy? The Great American Double-Standard continues to thrive  And lol @ "he was hired because he creates controversy" - he was hired because he is extremely popular among blacks. And until now, what came spewing out of his big mouth wasn't "outrageous trash" - just mindless gibberish. No wait my bad, he's an insightful commentator and awesome role model to boot - good move ESPN  Just another day in hood

If ESPN sticks with Michael Irvin (again) it says more about ESPN than it does about Irvin.

Everybody can easily see what Michael Irvin is. :armgrab:

I used to watch the ESPN pregame all the time. Since Irvin has been on the show it is un-watchable. Beyond that fact that he is an idiot, he is annoying to watch. His idea of winning an arguement is yelling louder. ESPN should take this opportunity to improve thier show and fire Irvin.

If a white guy had said anything similar to what Irvin said, even if he was joking, he would not be employed right now.

Yeah its all good for a big Mike to make slavery jokes. Mike personifies the type of guy to talk S*it and be the first on line to crucify a non-black if he made an outrageous statement like this. This type of stuff really hasd no business in an on air sports discussion. I read another article where Dan Patrick and Olberman were utterly embarassed by Ivin.

Other than knowing it wouldnt fly the other way, the ignorant race stuff doesnt bug me.As some have pointed out however, the problem many of us have with ESPN was that at one time it was "all about the sports". Its turning into MTV meets the WWF over there and its such a shame. It started with Stu Scott and the decline continues as they dumb down their broadcasts to reach a different demographic. Remember the days of sitting in front of the tv for 90 minutes of pre-game with actual reports and analysis? When it was only Berman with the shtick it was tolerable, but its become nothing more than noise. Its why I had high hopes from the NFL Network. For the last several years the only ESPN programming I watch aside from a game is Edge NFL Matchup/NFL Tonight and even that isnt what it used to be, IMO.

The sad thing is that other than Irvin they have a pretty good team. Here's hoping the rest of them make the move to NFLN.

You people are missing the point, Michael Irvin is on ESPN because unlike all the other analyst he does not just say the same thing as everyone else. He actually thinks outside the box. I couldnt stand watching a Berman, Young, and Jackson show because they would agree on everything. Sometimes not always Irvin is wrong but at least he brings an interesting angle on his analysis of the games. And for the record I think Irvin was only joking but if Steve Young had made that same joke he would not be an announcer any longer.

This may be the only time the words "thinks", "analysis" and "interesting" have been used to describe Irvin's yap. Unless of course this was borrowed from the ESPN promo guide.Look at the bright side, Irvin could be teamed up with Vitale doing college bb games.

The American Double Standard?!?!? Just like using the N-word, Blacks have more lattitude in regard to making comments about THEIR race and culture....sure it was irresponsible, but it's okay cuz Irvin is a Black Man. As for his commentary and dress, (smiling)...he does that to PISS you off and knows your just Joe Sixpack and can't do jack ish about it!

I don't know if it's jealousy, envy or what but most caucasians can't stand the likes of Irvin and Deion cuz they put their money, fashion, NFL stats, and Black Machismo in America's face...I love it cuz it doesn't really mean anything but it sure pisses off a BUNCH of people!

The NEW Athlete with money, style, effervescence, and quick wit is here to stay!

Don't like it?...(snickering)...Go 'head and watch tennis, golf, fly fishing, NASCAR, rugby or whatever tickles your fancy!

First, I heard it live and both Dan Patrick and his co-host backed off the statement so fast you could hear their chairs falling over. Both of them KNEW it was the wrong thing to say immediately. Can't remember what is was, but he said something else in that interview that was off-color (no pun intended) and they basically hung up the phone on him right after.Saying something like that is not machismo. Its ignorant. Amongst friends is one thing. I have no problem joking about something like that with my black friends and would have no problem with them saying something like that to me. But not on public radio. That was the wrong message to send regardless of his race.It may be he was shooting for controversy. It may be that he was shooting for humor. But what he found IMO ws unprofessional and reprehensable.BTW, the comment was in reference to a basketball game he had played against Romo and he was justifying why he lost. 'Cause Romo must be black somewhere along the line. Just dumb and in the end, all about himself and his own insecurity.

I honestly would have no problem with the comment were it not for one thing...

Imagine if Forbes magazine had done an interview in which the columnist said of an African-American C.E.O., "This guy is really smart, especially for a black man. He must have some white heritage flowing through his veins."

Exact same sentiment, but that comment would be viewed with FAR more disdain than Irvin's comment. There is a double standard and it has been caused by political correctness. Now, in my opinion, Irvin has every right to make that statement. It's stupid, but it's also obviously made as a joke. What I disapprove of is how much more "racist" it would be viewed the other way around.

Racism is the new witch hunt; a modern day Spanish Inquisition, if you will. You don't need proof or evidence, you just need to point your finger and scream at the top of your lungs, "RACIST!!!!" The media, of course, eats up ANY story of perceived discrimination and as a result furthers the racial divide, rather than mends it as they would have you believe.

ESPN obviously has no vested interested in doing anything if they don't feel any pressure to.

Extremely well said. And much as I hate ESPN, I'm amazed anyone watches any pre/post-game these days, to tell the truth. It's almost entirely just goofball stupidity and babbling.
