Where do they rank? Top 10 still? No Ed Reed to make plays in the secondary
Plus don't panic because they gave up rushing yards last week, it was the beast known as HILLIS!No Ed Reed to make plays in the secondary
I think we'll find out more this week. If the Steelers with Batch can move the ball effectively against them I would think they are no longer a top 10 D.Where do they rank? Top 10 still? No Ed Reed to make plays in the secondary
That was me... just not getting it done based on my league's scoring.Someone dropped them in one league
They actually have 5 sacks so far this season, not 4.
This is one of the cases where they are playing better in real life than in the fantasy world.
Their D is still #1 in yards.

The interesting thing is that with that secondary you would have expected them to be giving up tons of passing yards but instead they've been more vulnerable against the run. Maybe the secondary isn't as bad as expected but I think it is due to the fact that they have played some teams that were struggling in passing : NYJ, CIN, CLV. It is good for the Ravens that Roethlisberger is still on suspension as he would be much more likely to test that secondary than Batch.

I don't know if it's safe to say they're top 5 but, it really depends on your leagues scoring system. If you're awarded fantasy pts. for game pts. given up then they're rank higher. The Ravens were gouged by Hillis last week as Cleveland's pushed recently cut Trevor Pryce and Kelly Gregg 4 yds off the line of scrimage routinely. Terrance Cody will be active for the first time this season and Brandon McKinney will see more time. Both DT's weigh in the 350 lbs range. Those two in combination with Ngata will be more effective against the run. The Ravens DBs/LBs have had no less than 7 passes bounce off their hands, the return of Ed Reed in week 7 will certainly turn a few of those incompletions into interceptions. Maybe they're a good buy low or hold prospect with a few key guys returning on the D. Their return game has also been subpar but they're making adjustments rotating in different returners. CB Webb is being worked back into the plan after returning from the ACL inury.NatronIsMean said:That was me... just not getting it done based on my league's scoring.Someone dropped them in one league
As roadkill says above, Mattison hasn't blitzed nearly as much as Ryan did. And I don't think he ever will, but not having Reed healthy for a good portion of the last two years really limits the team's blitzing abilities (for more on this subject, see: Polamalu, Troy and the Steelers). I think some of that may be psychological (Reed-as-safety-blanket), but nevertheless....Also, you need to look a little deeper to see that Ozzie has done a pretty nice job of quietly rebuilding the defense. You mention the recent 1st round picks, but the Ravens have a bunch of players that were drafted 2nd-and-beyond that contribute nicely (McClain, Ellerbe, Webb, Zbikowski, the Hawaiian guy) and has traded/signed guys like Carr, Foxworth (IR), and Washington. They also drafted both Cody (played little so far) & Kindle (not played at all since cracking his skull) in the 2nd round this year who should be big help down the road. In fact, I think they envisioned Kindle bringing heat from the opposite side from Suggs to increase sacks. As for Suggs himself, I think he looks fantastic. He's wrecking the pocket and putting tons of pressure on the QB.Of course, all of the above is more from an NFL perspective and this thread is FF-related. Once Reed comes back, I expect the sacks & INTs to increase (how could they go down?) but I wouldn't look for the incredible scoring machine that D was a few years ago.Your last sentence is really key - it depends on your scoring system. Big-play scoring is pretty random. Maybe try to balance it out with big scores for low point/yardage totals. My local redraft (team D, not IDP) gives 15 pts for a shutout, and something like 9 for under 7 pts; I think 15 pts for under 150 total yards, etc... In a normal year, the "good" NFL defenses will pretty closely mirror the top of our D standings.well as an owner of Terrell Suggs in an IDP league who is putting up pedestrian numbers, i'd guess they aren't getting to the QB anymoreRay is another yr older, Ed is out, Suggs lost a step, and they have not added top talent to this side of the ball focusing instead on drafting and signing offensive helpraft 2007 1st ... OG GrubbDraft 2008 1st ... QB FlaccoDraft 2009 1st ... OT OherDraft 2010 1st ... traded out of 1st rdand big $ signing FA's has gone mostly Offense tooBoldin, McNair, Birk, Mason (signed and re-signed)you are what you emphasize and harbaugh and co have slowly but sure leaned to the O side of the ballbut hey they are 4-1 so who's to argue they are wrongnow that being said you can be a good NFL def and not wrack up alot of big play fantasy points, which is probably still the case herebut look at the QBs who BAL has faced and STILL not been able to make plays (training-wheels-in-week-one Sanchez, Batch, Wallace, CPalmer ... Orton so 4 of 5 just plain awful)that's one reason i hate that kind of scoring ...(i.e. DST gives up 35 points but returns a fumble for a TD and gets 3 sacks outscores the DST who has 1 sack and 1 TO and holds opponent to 3 points)
