Is Boogler ruining Torry Holt? (1 Viewer)

In fact, the Rams O in general has looked bad so far.

Could they be missing Mikey Martz more than we expected? I know Linehan also runs the Air Coryell, but it seems like the Rams offense is lost right now. It is early, but my eyebrows are raised a bit after two games.

Plus Boogler is just not that good. I saw at least two long passes to a wide open Holt flat missed due to poorly thrown balls by Boogler yesterday. And I believe their Oline is hurting as well.

The guy is on pace for 96 catches and 8 TDs. Yes, his yardage is a little low so far, but people...IT IS WEEK 2!!! relax

I was at the game yesterday, and it seemed like they were not on the same page on a few passes early in the game. Not sure if Holt ran the wrong route, or Bulger made an incorrect read, but there was one where Holt ran a fly pattern and Bulger thought he was running a come back route. On another pass, he ran what appeared to be a corner pattern and Bulger threw the pass as if Holt was running a slant.

They did try several deep balls to Holt, but he wasn't able to come down with any of them. I know there was one early in the game where the defender made a nice play. Later in the game, Bulger missed Holt deep down the middle for what would have been about at 55 yd TD (Bulger overthrew him by a few yards, but Holt had 1-2 steps on the defender). There was also one other play towards the end where they took a shot deep and the CB had inside position, and Holt actually pass interfered to keep it from being intercepted (though they didn't flag him for it).

As a Holt owner, I know the yardage wasn't there, but he did receive a lot of targets. He definitely seemed to get the attention of the defense and stretched the field, allowing Bruce a lot of room underneath on crossing patterns. His bottom line would have looked a lot different if even one of those deep balls connected, and I was encouraged that he was on the field with the ball inside the 5 yard line. I think part of the problem was that Bulger was not able to establish much of a rhythm, and the 49ers defense was constantly pressuring him/blitzing him forcing him to throw before he wanted to. Part of me also wonders if Bulger is having trouble getting into a rhythm with fewer targets going out into the pattern (mostly 2 WR sets) compared to year's past with 3 and 4 WR sets under Martz. Anyways, just my :2cents:

IT IS WEEK 2!!!
Fair enough, but a shark has to be able to maneuver early. That's how championships are won and lost. Just ask the Lamont Jordan owners.Personally I think Holt should be fine if Boogler can get it together, but new coaching staffs always cause me to pause and do a little extra diligence. The fact that Holt leads the league in targets makes me feel a lot better.I guess at this point it a matter of rust combined with getting used to the new staff.

I think he'll rebound as the offense gels. It's kinda strange; the Rams seem to move the ball okay, but no one's been getting in the end zone dating back to the preseason. What gives? Any St. Louis homers have an opinion?

not a homer, but i follow them closely...

i think it is a combination of several factors...

they have only played two games (but offensive power outage extends to pre-season)

DEN week one has a pretty good defense

they lost starting center in week one & pace had concussion week two

principals taking time to adjust to new offense (MIA had slow start last year, too, as i recall, than started putting up serious numbers in second half of the season)

jackson could stand some improvement in pass pro

i'm starting to think bulger may not be the kind of guy that does well with memorizing playbook & mental reps... not that he isn't smart, but there are different styles of learning... he may be the kind of learner that needs actual reps & in-game experience in the new system before he makes the breakthrough (no idea how long that will take... martz offense was admittedly very complex, but he claimed to still be learning it several years after he began)

this offense reportedly had shorter drops & it may be screwing with his timing... hopefully he can recalibrate soon

i'm not sure if bulger is known as one of the more accurate deep throwers in NFL... if there are fewer WRs going into patterns in what amounts to a more crowded space (shorter & more intermediate zones), hopefully he can improve on the deep ball to loosen things up...

While not a Rams homer (I am a Broncos fan), I do live in St. Louis, so I see every Rams game.

Linehan has a reputation for being a terrible play-caller in the red zone and he is living up to that rep so far. That does not bode well for Steven Jackson, who is likely to keep getting his yards, but the TD's could be hard to come by.

Bulger looks completely baffled. There is talk right now, wondering if he is a system quarterback (see: Mike Martz's offense). If he continues to struggle, the talk will continue.
