Is Chris Johnson going to be a problem (1 Viewer)

Chris Johnson announced that he and LenDale White have retired their old "Smash and Dash" nickname.

Johnson renamed himself "Every Coach's Dream," or "Dream" for short. "I have to be my own guy," Johnson added. "I can't be noticed as a group anymore." This may subtly indicate that Johnson anticipates being the Titans' feature back this season. Coach Jeff Fisher has already hinted as much.

Titans running back: Nothing good has come in yet

TERESA M. WALKER, Jun 23, 2009

Chris Johnson is using his Twitter account seeking touchdown celebration suggestions because the Tennessee running back wants to top the antics of Terrell Owens and Chad Ochocinco. "I'm trying," Johnson said Tuesday. "I need help. I'm pretty sure they have somebody to help them, so I'm thinking hard now."

a bit yeah but he also looks like he's clowning around during the interviews

when it was time to get down to business he was fine last year.

Most of all, probably, he needs to get over not winning ROY and move on already

I understand what makes these guys great is the mentality that they are the best and need no one's help. With that said, alientating a guy who can give you 1-2 more years on your body in the NFL does not pay (literally). Tiki Barber is a great example of a guy who got to learn, split carries in two forms of "Thunder and Lighting (with Dayne and Jacobs...and even Way) and why he was so great in his late 20s and early 30s and can still walk today.

This is so dumb.

Let the guys have some fun, they're playing a game (yes, and getting paid)

I think we all oughta loosen up a bit. Did you guys say the same thing last year when Welker made a snow angel after a TD? Let these guys have some fun, I'm sure everyone here has said something dumb and a bit on the arrogant side before they turned 25.

(btw he got flagged)

My major concern with these quotes is that Chris Johnson is really coming off as a "Me First" type player. Haynesworth has moved on and now the Media needs a face of the franchise to hype each game. Considering all Johnson brings to the table, he is likely to be that guy. While I think the Titans have enough veteran leadership to get them through the tough times, you have to be concerned about how this kid is going to act when times do get tough. Chad and TO are great players and media darlings when things are going well for their teams, its when the L's start adding up that they act out. If Johnson starts getting flagged for some of these TD celebrations, its not going to take Fisher long to put in Lendale once they get inside the 5. You think Chris is going to be happy with someone else getting his scores? Is he going to say something stupid when that scenario plays out?Bottom line is that the guy is stepping into a leadership role this season, I'd just rather see the guy take on an LT type leadership role than a TO type...

Complete non-issue in my eyes. He's just joking around with the media. I haven't read anywhere over the last year that he's a distraction or not a good teammate and until I read something that tells me different, I'm not going to assume he's all of sudden a "me first" player just b/c he's messing around with the media during mini-camp

If he draws attention away from Vince, he's a great teammate and humanitarian.

Johnson

White

Smash and Dash are no more, at least to hear Chris Johnson tell it to Jim Wyatt.

The Titans' second-year running back, who felt he should have been offensive rookie of the year in 2008, is continuing to market himself. And to do that, he needs not to be part of a duo, but more individualistic.

"Smash and Dash have had a divorce -- that's official," Johnson said after Tuesday's minicamp practice at Baptist Sports Park. "I have to be my own guy, so no more Smash and Dash, that was last year. Every Coach's Dream, that's me. Because they say every team has its own identity. I feel for me, I can't be noticed as a group any more. I am my own guy.''

Also, Johnson has already tweeted on the subject twice:

"The media ask me about my new nickname (EVERY COACHES DREAM) lol how u like me now."

"Lendale white is upset mad he don't know how to accept that we are split up."

UPDATE, 9:59 p.m.

Wyatt later got hold of White who offered a response that topped Johnson's humor:

"You know the little brother who always falls off his bike, and the big brother comes in and shows you how to ride it? Eventually the little brother learns how to ride it, but that one time they slip up and bust their head and they forget what big brother taught him," White said. "We're going to have to go back in the lab and figure things out and then we'll definitely be hearing an apology out of my younger brother. ... But I guess it's now 'Smash and I'm Going to Whoop His ... ' We'll talk."

Sounds divisive, even if he was joking around.

Agreed. In a world where, unfortunately, perception is everything some of these guys need coaching about how to handle the media.Kid keeps it up and he will start costing himself money in endorsements.

This is kind of funny. I'm not a big fan at all of self promoting but that's just me....it happens all the time and it's here to stay whether I like it or not. I can understand Johnson's desire to "separate" himself from White and look to establish himself more as a singular presense even if didn't go about it in the best way. White needs Johnson, Johnson doesn't need White so I can understand Whites nose being out of joint.

White's response is kind of funny...Johnson is really lucky that White taught him so much...he's been such a terrific example throughout his career.

At least he has the "big" part right. Don't go on a hunger strike waiting for that apology.

It'll be interesting to see whether anything comes out of this. I doubt Fisher's the type of guy to let it escalate outside of the locker room, but this was kinda stupid. I don't mind the sentiment ( and I definitely understand wanting to separate from LenDale ), but the execution was lacking. Its really not that bad.... but the question I have to ask is what possible gain did he get out of this?LenDale's a chump, sure. But show some respect. Why risk offending White ( or White's locker room friends ) with this junk when it serves absolutely no purpose? This, by the way, was the worst part IMO...

"Lendale white is upset mad he don't know how to accept that we are split up."
Now I think there's a better than average chance that they are joking with each other behind the scenes, but this is Shaq/Kobe stuff if not.

With OTAs in the books and training camps still about a month away from ramping up, this is the most nail-biting time for head coaches and NFL franchises. There is so much angst, effort and work that each organization puts in to keep their physical specimens over-programed and on the straight-and-narrow during the off-season.

However, this gap of time between the closing of OTAs and the start of training camps is when every NFL organization feels most vulnerable. This window of time is when every head coach reads the newspaper/internet every morning and prays they don't see 'drugs' and/or 'arrest' next to any of their players names in a headline. All of this is to say that if Chris Johnson's latest diatribe about divorcing from Lendale White's 'Smash and Dash' duo is the worst thing Jeff Fisher reads about CJ between now and training camp, I'm quite certain Fisher will be overjoyed.

Chris Johnson is young, he still has a lot to learn as Lendale White alluded to. Perhaps this will be the final lesson Lendale White will teach his young protege: Never piss off a veteran in a contract year that lives on the same depth chart block as you.

It's not like White is considerably older and experienced. Adn what experience he does have seems a bit underwhelming when you look at his "accomplishments"
Hi, I'm looking for the uptight white guy thread and...Oh, here it is!
Why even say that? Doesn't contribute at all...

I really don't think CJ will up at night worrying about Lendale taking his job....This is CJ's offense, not the other way around...

Neither does "Just another gang banger with speed." And since I am unaware of any CJ gang affiliation, if I was an uptight black guy, I might find that pretty inappropriate. Since I am instead a supercool white guy, I think some of the comments in this thread are ridiculously naïve. Players have been talking smack as long as I can remember, this just sounds like another young, confident kid. Not contributing? To what? This thread? This thread has zero fantasy value, IMO, so I'm not too concerned about ruining some valuable strategy discussion. There's several offhand comments in this thread, what's wrong with mine?

Anybody who calls himself 'Every Coaches Dream' can't possibly be losing sleep over the guy behind him on the depth chart. No arguments there. "This is CJ's offense". No arguments there.BUT - Contract year players, especially those with a modicum dash of talent, have a knack for saving their best efforts when dollas are on the line. I look at a player like Lendale White and clearly see a player who would smell opportunity, understand the gravitas of the moment, and absolutely crush it. I own Chris Johnson in both of my keeper leagues, love the guy, and am as wow'd by his talents as anyone. But after being weathered from 23 seasons of FF, one lesson stands taller than most...

One swallow doth not a summer make

Let's see what Season 2 of 'Every Coaches Dream' brings before we crown this guy.

Players have been talking smack as long as I can remember, this just sounds like another young, confident kid.
Is it usual to talk smack to your teammates ?Just wondering cuz I didn't think that was the proper audience.
It's probably a huge part of the locker room to mess with your teammates. This was clearly a joke by Johnson, and White messed with him right back.

As a Titan fan, I have mixed emotions about this. I like the swagger, and the confidence, but on the other hand, I am not sure I like the "me" attitude.Lendale expressed that attitude a little last year, and it got him time on the bench, when he was usually in there. Since he has shown up in better shape, and seems to be more focused, CJ may want to tone it down a little. CJ is a great talent. I just hope he doesn't let it go to his head. I like what Coach Fisher had to say about it....

(on Johnson saying he wants to be known as “Every Coach’s Dream”)I wasn’t aware that he made those comments … He didn’t say anything to me about it.(on if Johnson is every coach’s dream)Every coach’s dream? With a few exceptions: playing the bongos, fumbling the ball and getting hurt in the playoff game.
Fisher will keep things in check I believe.

The more I read it, the more this sounds right. Fisher should have smacked him harder though. The uptight white guy post was funny, by the way.

They get paid millions of dollars to go out and do their job. If they cant have fun with out the End Zone antics then they have a definite maturity problem. I'll go to war with a Heinz Ward and Frank Gore. They mean business, understand their role and don't have to be the center of attention to be effective football players. I would not want Ocho Stinko or anyone with his mental state anywhere around me for any reason.Be cocky and be bad ### on the field, but show a little maturity.Chris Johnson has not acted like a butt head on the field "yet" and I don't think Fisher will allow it, so we will see.

Nothing wrong with what you said. I don't seem to agree with your views often but nothing inappropriate here.

/adjusts his tie

Jeez.. tough crowd!

C'mon guys this is funny stuff. They're clearly taking the mick out of each other, the press and many of you too, evidently.

I seem to recall a former Colts kicker who called out the starting QB of his own team in a drunken diatribe...
