is diet soda bad for you? (1 Viewer)

i keep reading in a lot of posts that some people are addicted to diet soda. is it reallly that bad? it has to be better than drinking the regular stuff. zero calories? maybe the acidity is bad for the teeth but other than that?

It can't be good for you, but it's probably not as bad as the high fructose corn syrup in regular soda.
I think the old formulas that used cane sugar were the least harmful in the long run.Plus they tasted the best. :banned:

Water is the best.

Flavored water, like Propel and stuff, are a little better than Diet Soda.

If you can't get used to the taste of water just yet, maybe try putting a little low calorie tea mix in it to start.

I read in Men's Health a couple of months ago that diet soda drinkers are actually at a higher risk of weight gain since the fake sugar makes the body want real sugar, so you're more likely to over eat junkfood when drinking diet.

I'm on day 2 of quitting pop myself, we need a support group.

Why is it so hard to quit soda? I hear that a lot in here and while I grew up drinking Coke, I have no problem going months without a soda. I don't see it as addicting at all but I guess it is for some people.

caffeine is the most widely used drug on the planet.

I know, I guess it just doesn't hit me like say cigs, dip, coffee. I could drink a 2 liter at night during college then within an hour go to sleep. Guess I'm lucky.

Yeah, I know regular tea is 0 calories. I was referring to the low calorie tea mixes made by Crystal Light and other companies. I'm suggesting using a little bit of this until the person gets used to the taste of water.

The only soda that isn't terrible for you is soda with pure cane sugar. Most types of fake sugars either causes health problems or have not been studied well to understand the long term effects.

What's tellin is that I see a ton of obese people who drink Diet Soda.
That's not really "telling" at all.I see a lot of overweight people at the gym.

Does that mean the gym makes you fat?

OBESE, not overweight...HUGE difference IMO.I don't see any OBESE people in gyms.

XObese ≠ overweight
People that are obese and drink Soda every day switch to Diet Soda to stop being obese. So seeing an obese person drinking diet soda doesn't mean much.
Maybe it does. His comment followed this one:

If assumed he was commenting on that. If the artificial sweeteners really do trigger the insulin response, causing your body to remove excess sugar that isn't there and increasing your craving for sugar and other carbs, then they may have an indirect effect on weight gain.

I personally know a few people who are beyond fat, they are obese and they are always downing diet soda. I've also ordered food out and have seen obese people order a diet soda with their meal. Perhaps it's a coincidence.

I have seen a lot of skinny people drinking diet soda, too. Is it possible that diet soda makes you skinny AND obese??? :tinfoilhat:

very bad

I wonder how many are loading up on other garbage because they think that diet soda is something healthy?

Is diet soda better or worse than Gatorade/Powder drinks mixes(iced tea, kool aid etc)/Capri Sun Juice Box type drinks etc?

why do people have the problem with the taste of water? You have got to be kidding me here!
I think it's more the lack of taste that people have issue with.
I'd rather just throw a slice of lemon or lime in the water than drink some of these "flavored" waters like "Fruit2-0" :yucky:

I've started drinking a lot more water lately. But I find that it's much easier for me to drink the flavored water. I just need to have something with some taste. I've been drinking Fruit2O. I like it. I'm sure plain water would probably be better, but it's still better than drinking diet soda.

But, like with most things, moderation is the key. Most things won't hurt you as long as you don't go overboard with them.

Dunno, if there was a lack of taste then why not drink it? I hear people say "I don't like the taste of water" which makes no sense since we need water to survive. Are people that messed up from drinking sodas that they can't drink water anymore because it isn't full of chemicals and/or sugar?

I love the taste of clean water. Tap water can be nasty sometimes. We buy bottled water by the case and I down several bottles daily.I've never been a soda drinker though. Can't stand the taste of most sodas. Ginger Ale is good though. Mt. Dew Code Red was good also.

Perhaps it's similar to people who only eat junk food and hate the taste of heathly food. You train your body to eat crap long enough then it will reject anything clean or good for you.We need water to survive so how do people live off just juice and sodas? I honestly couldn't.

I'm going to tag on Vitamin Water here as well (13g of sugar). Good or bad?

I drink a LOT of water, but it can't be the only thing I drink. Iced tea is second option, though I use Splenda or a splash of lemonade. Coffee with Splenda. Maybe 1 Diet Pepsi a day.

Real question I guess is the use of Splenda. I'm trying to lose weight, so if I can't drink coffee black or tea straight which is the better option? Two teaspoons of sugar at X calories or 1 packet of Splenda (considered the lesser of sweetener evils)

I'll take the Big Mac combo meal, go large, and give me a Diet coke to drink.
:lmao:
No kidding. I was at McDonald's once and this 300lb+ guy in front of me was ordering. He got a Big Mac super-sized value meal, 2 apples pies, an extra cheeseburger tossed in there and then changed his extra large Coke to a diet Coke. :wall:

A healthier alternative to all sodas is to use unflavored carbonated mineral water and add it to grape juice or orange juice. It's refreshing, has no high fructose corn syrup, and not too many calories if you use 1/2 juice and 1/2 mineral water.

Every time I drink a diet soda I end up with a canker sore. I don't know if it's the acid or what. I asked the family doc about it once and he said that it was definately possible since they really have little idea what brings on canker sores. Evidently they are different than cold sores which is definatley triggered by a virus.
