We all remember when Vernon Davis came out of Maryland in 2006 and went sixth overall. 4.38 in the 40, 33 reps at 225 and a 42" vert at the combine. San Francisco was applauded for taking him and experts said he would turn around their passing game with the mismatches he creates for linebackers and safeties. Then he goes out and puts up pedestrian numbers for the 2006, 2007 and 2008 seasons without that one "this is the Davis we expected" game. Then the light comes on, so to speak, and he becomes one of the best receiving TEs in the game right now.
Fast forward one year. Greg Olsen. 4.51, 23 reps, 35.5" vert. Projected to be the number one TE in the draft and goes 31st overall. First two years very similar with average numbers but, again, not that "aha" game. This week he goes out and puts up 3 TDs (albeit on 5 receptions) and people again start to take notice.
So, are the situations comparable? Does Olsen continue for the rest of the season putting top TE numbers or was this a one-game wonder type thing? He was hyped coming into the season from a fantasy perspective, is now when it starts paying off?
Looking for what you expect from him the rest of the season. I think he becomes Cutler's new favorite red-zone toy and middle of the field possession guy and finishes the season strong. Something to the tune of 45-50 catches for 500-600 yards and 8-10 TDs.
