DA RAIDERS

it seems like this off season is friggen nuts! big name players seem to be moving all over the place. whether it's by trade or by the hand of big business, it just seems like more big name playes are on the move than ever before.

whay say you?

these aren't big names

big names are when Reggie White leaves Philly for GB or on a lessor note Kearse leaves Tenn for Philly

McGahee to Balt or TJones to NYJ are NOT big names (and those are trades); the FA names blow

i disagree. perhaps i should rephrase the topic, we're not talking tier 1 guys, but it sure seems that a ####-ton of tier 2 guys are on the move this year.

This year's FA class is downright boring. If it wasn't for the some of the trades, and some of the trades that haven't happen yet (i.e. Carr and Moss), this year's off season has been a trainwreck.

You have 3rd tier guys getting paid superstar money because the cap rose and teams are savvy enough to have the cap room to sign players, let alone sign FAs with more money than they thought they would have; in thanks to the new bargaining agreeement.

This year's FA class should consider itself lucky they hit the market when they did. $14 million in cap room x 32 teams = a lot of happy FAs.

I just hope this is an asterik and not a precident. I'd hate to see football go down the dark path of MLB.

I think part of it is the fact that a bunch of subpar guys are getting so much money that they are being reported like they are super-stars. just because they sign a stud contract doesn't mean they are stud players.....

Agreed. I mean, look at all 32 teams in the league. How many of them lost one of their top 10 players from last season?

If you actually looked at the rosters and thought about it, I daresay you'd agree that the answer is "not many". These aren't Tier1 players that are moving, and most of them aren't even Tier2 guys. These are Tier3 and Tier4 guys who were let go because they weren't even one of the top 50% of their team's starters.

 So far this free agency period can be summarized by the title "Mediocre players laughing all the way to the bank."

It's the same reason why rookie draft picks are shooting up in value.

Coverage of the NFL.

ESPN pretty much now has year round coverage. FA/draft get 50x more coverage then it did 5 years ago. There's a zillion FF sites. Every little move gets posted, discussed, posted again.

Don't log into FBGs for a week and it will seem like a quiet week. Log in daily and it seems like the NFL is playing musical chairs with its players. Like someone else said, this has been a pretty boring FA.

Most fantasy football leagues are still ruled by the running back position. Due to the change in starting RB's on many teams this offseason....this free agent year has had more impact in terms of fantasy players changing hands...from a fantasy perspective.

How many teams brought in a RB via free agency in 2006 (not counting the draft) to replace the previous year starter?

AFC

Baltimore Ravens - Jamal Lewis

Buffalo Bills - McGahee

Cincinnati Bengals -Rudi

Cleveland Browns - Droughns

Denver Broncos - Bell/M.Anderson (Did not sign a free agent that was projected to be the starter).

Houston Texans - Did not pick up an impact free agent - R.Dayne

Indianapolis Colts - Rhodes (New Starter)

Jacksonville Jaguars - F.Taylor

Kansas City Chiefs - LJ

Miami Dolphins - R.Brown

New England Patriots - Dillon

New York Jets - Platoon - BARLOW

Oakland Raiders - L.Jordan

Pittsburgh Steelers - Parker

San Diego Chargers - LT

Tennessee Titans - C.Brown

NFC

Arizona Cardinals - EDGE

Atlanta Falcons - Dunn

Carolina Panthers - D.Foster

Chicago Bears - T.Jones

Dallas Cowboys - J.Jones

Detroit Lions - KJ

Green Bay Packers - A.Green

Minnesota Vikings - C.TAYLOR

New Orleans Saints - Deuce

New York Giants - Tiki

Philadelphia Eagles - Westbrook

St. Louis Rams - S-Jax

San Francisco 49ers - Gore

Seattle Seahawks - Alexander

Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Cadillac

Washington Redskins - Portis

Basically 3 RB's were acquired in free agency that were projected to take over the starting duties by most FF enthusiasts. I personally didn't think Barlow would ever be the man in New York.

Let's take a look at this offseason:

AFC

Baltimore Ravens - MCGAHEE

Buffalo Bills - Will add RB before the draft (C.BROWN?)

Cincinnati Bengals - Rudi

Cleveland Browns - J.LEWIS

Denver Broncos - HENRY

Houston Texans - A.GREEN

Indianapolis Colts - Addai (New starter with Rhodes departure)

Jacksonville Jaguars - F.Taylor/Drew

Kansas City Chiefs - LJ

Miami Dolphins - R.Brown

New England Patriots - Maroney (New Starter with Dillon's departure)

New York Jets - T.JONES

Oakland Raiders - L.Jordan

Pittsburgh Steelers - Parker

San Diego Chargers - LT

Tennessee Titans - L.White (New Starter by default at this point)

NFC

Arizona Cardinals - Edge

Atlanta Falcons - Dunn/Norwood

Carolina Panthers - D.Williams

Chicago Bears - Benson (New Starter)

Dallas Cowboys - M.Barber

Detroit Lions - T.BELL if KJ's injury is indeed severe.

Green Bay Packers - Should sign a FA back before the draft.

Minnesota Vikings - C.Taylor

New Orleans Saints - Bush/Deuce

New York Giants - B.Jacobs (New Starter?)

Philadelphia Eagles - Westbrook

St. Louis Rams - S.Jax

San Francisco 49ers - Gore

Seattle Seahawks - Alexander

Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Caddilac

Washington Redskins - Portis

Due to the free agent RB acquisitions...it could ultimately effect the starting position for a minimum of 10 teams compared to the entrenched starter for that team the previous season. In addition to all the vets going to new teams...we have the...how will C.Benson/L.White do if they are the #1 guy now debates. I would say that in ff circles this offseason has created more discussion/debate compared to recent years....which makes it seem like it has been a crazy offseason. It has....in fantasy football.

One thing to remember in regards to the RB movement as well is that last year we had 4 big name talents (Bush, White, Maroney, DeAngelo), 1 guy who landed in an outstanding situation (Addai) and your usual crop of decent 2nd tier backs.

This year, you essentially have Peterson and Lynch and not a whole lot else. Even the 2nd tier is pretty poor as compared to last year.
