Work in a small office, 17 employees, and we have casual Fridays. Love the concept but now that its summer it seems half the office wears flip flops. It was fine when the cute girls were the only ones but now even a couple of the younger guys are doing it. Not only do I have to see their ugly feet but I get to hear them making a ton of noise as they walk by my office all day. Too casual or am I'm being too uptight. I admit part of the problem is I can't stand one of the guys who's wearing them, know it all #####, so it's grating on me.

Men shouldn't be wearing flip-flops to work unless they work on or near the beach.

It's much easier for women to get away with this.

I voted yes--but given that it's a casual Fridays affair I'm not seeing a difference in concept between flip flops and open sandals here so I took that into consideration. I also don't buy the double standard in this case when it's just based on the ugly. .

I did this a few Friday's ago... My boss made enough sarcastic remarks to make sure I knew he thought I had crossed the casual line. He isn't a #### at all so he didn't want to blatantly say "don't do this", but the message was received.

Depends on the feet of the women involved. If we're talking feet that are in the 8-10 range then yes they should wear flip flops. If you've got the goods then why not show them off?

7 or lower though no way. The flaws become very visible

I dont think its appropriate for an offive regsrdless of your sex. I also dont think men should ever wear flip flops if they are not at a beach, pool or relaxing around their home.

If you're working with customers one on one at any point, no. If you're not then I wouldn't pick the battle, but I still wouldn't do it.

I pretty much wear flip flops from the second it gets warm until winter. At home. Never at the office.

Don't really care about the dudes wearing them, cause some do here. I ain't looking at the dudes.

Went through this every two months or so when we had casual Fridays in Sao Paulo.

Simply had to reiterate over and over again: even though it says casual it still means no shorts, no flip flops no exposed belly buttons and no see through clothing.

Most offices, no, bad idea. Even if you get away with it, it doesn't look good and the bosses don't approve.

I've never worked in an office, so I may be way off base here.

Do you office workers encounter clients/customers on a regular basis? I have an impression that most office workers only interact with their other workers.

Occasionally I'll have to work a weekend with ~5 or less people out of our 50-person staff....if it's nice out, I'll wear basketball shorts and a t-shirt with flip-flops or something like that. So will some of my bosses.

Definitely wouldn't wear them if clients were coming in, though.

Basically never. It can affect perception though. A lot of times casual is taken to the extreme by certain office workers but never the bosses. If you ever intend on being one of the bosses, I might not suggest flip flops just because you "can".

Good point. Weekends are fair game. Anyone else who shows on a non-work day will do the same. tshirt, shorts, tennis shoes, hat on Saturdays IMO.

I agree with this. If you're in management, its probably not the best idea. I'll never be in management.

Working for the electric company, I meet customers and go out to meet crew members. No flip flops ever. If I'm going to where one of the crews are working, it's steel toed shoes.

The dopes next to us are software people and they are in flip-flops and sandals all over the place. They bring in their dogs. They are also disgusting dooooshes in the bathroom (crap on seats, don't wash hands, bring food in bathroom, etc.). If you are in an office setting, guys should not be exposing their toes.

For women, I think that they should not be wearing real flip flops. We have a little bowling ball of a woman in accounting here who wears them all the time in the summer. She walks up and down the hallway and it is LOUD. People want to kill her. It is unprofessional.
