Is it time to panic yet? (1 Viewer)

I know after week 1 it's to early to panic if a "stud" has a bad game, but how soon does panic set in for 0-2 owners with iffy quarterback situations?

Is it time to take a long, hard look at Pennington or Grossman or Frye or even Alex Smith over guys like Bulger, Delhomme and Hasselbeck?

With a relatively short season, fantasy football is a very time-sensitive game. Starting out 2 games back out of 13 or 14 games can be tough to come back from, especially if one of the losses is to a 2-0 owner in your division.

Do you guys think dumping Bulger or Delhomme or Hasselbeck for Pennington or Grossman is too much of a knee-jerk reaction for an 0-2 to take?

Here's my take....I would be getting concerned at this point if I had Bulger or Delhomme simply because Bulger isn't getting the Martz treatment this year and flinging the rock every other play. Delhomme appears to be an average quarterback who puts up good numbers when a certain receiver turns 15-yard gains into 60-yard TDs.

Hasselbeck will come around, in my opinion. They get some easy games and his receiving corps should bounce back pretty quickly. Jerramy "Stone Hands" Stevens will also be making a return soon, so I think it's safe to wait on dumping Hass.

As far as Grossman, Pennington, et al are concerned, I would drop Bulger for either of those. I think we're seeing the changing of the gurad in St. Louis and Bulger is merely a good #2 right now. Many drafted him as their #1 QB, so why not take a shot on a guy putting up #1 numbers? Unless you are stacked at QB and think he will come out of this, I say cut bait.

Delhomme is different. If Smith comes back healthy, I think Jake will rebound considerably and put up solid numbers. If this hammy lingers, Delhomme is going to continue to put up mediocre numbers and won't be worth starting except for bye week replacements.

Pennington is going to be playing from behind a lot this year, so I think he will be a good starter in most leagues. He doesn't make a ton of mistakes, and his receiving corps looks like they're out to prove a point this year. I like him going forward.

Grossman is a bit tricky. His receivers are excellent, but how much is going to throw this year? Jones looks good running the ball and their D will keep them ahead most games. If you have an extra roster spot, he'd definitely be worth stashing away, but I'd take a wait-and-see approach before I annointed him my #1 QB.

Any other thoughts?

I've got Bulger, Favre, and Pennington on my team. I've been burned the last two weeks with Bulger. Starting him against SF I THOUGHT was a no-brainer. Now comes week three for the Rams and IT LOOKS like they have another good matchup against AZ. Hmm.. Pennington against Buffalo, Favre against Detroit, or Bulger against AZ? :wall:

I've got headache already!!!! :loco:

there's the rub... bulger has done nothing to inspire my confidence and keep him in my lineup, but his upcoming schedule is such crap (arizona, detroit, green bay  ), i am tempted to leave him in and hope for the big game (that will probably never come :( )

If you are having QB problems you don't cut a QB who has a good track record but isn't doing much so far this year. You cut a backup RB or WR and pick up a 3rd QB and hang on to your guy who is underperforming.

Which is what I did. I cut Wali Lundy and grabbed Chad Pennington. I see some nice matchups for him this year.

Yes.
I disagree - I think Pennington is a step up over Bulger or Delhomme.I dropped Chris Simms after week 1 for Pennington. I watched the Jets game and think that although he has lost some arm strength, Pennington is for all purposes back.I do not own Hasselbeck in any league and I have not been following his games, but he does have more weapons on offense this year than ever before.

Assuming your roster situation/league rules permit it, absolutely. eg I dumped McCardell for A Smith.

And you left out Jake Plummer who has killed one of my teams.
Jake doesn't belong in this same higher draft tier of underperformers. He's easier to cut. In fact I've let him go myself where I had Grossman available as my new QB #2. I'd worry about Bulger much more than Hasselbeck or Delhomme, who will come around.

Im just the opposite, I think Delhomme = worthless without SS. Hass will be fine. I think Marc is working out the kinks of the Linehan O.

Actually, that's not the opposite of my opinion. I just feel that SSmith is back soon. That's when I think Jake comes around. I'm hanging on to JD myself, but may bench again him for week 3. Point was no "panic" here, which is a direct answer the thread question. I'm not considering moving or dumping JD at this time when he may be gold later this season as the great one returns.

I'm thinking HARD about dropping Hass for Grossman or Pennington. I'd drop anotehr player, but our roster rules do not permit it.

I have Bulger and have caught portions of his first two games. From what I've observed, the Rams are giving the ball to SJax a lot between the 20s, but Bulger is getting shots at the endzone in the redzone. I'm not in a panic because I think the TDs will come, but I'm not expecting huge yardage days, either.

I think Hasselbeck is nursing sore ribs right now.
Sore ribs and another bout of the dropsies from him his receivers. I counted 6 at least on Sunday. Branch will improve that statisitic. Hass gets rattles when the dropsies comeout to play. You want to bench Hass for Grossman or Pennington for a week that's one thing. But you guys are flat out crazy to drop him for one of those guys. With Branch, DJax, Engram and Hackett plus SA and Mack Strong getting more passes then last year the offense will start exploding soon enough. Same with Delhomme since once he's got a homerun threat on the field it's a different story. All dropping them does is make another team in your league better.

I have Hasselback in one league and CPepp/Plummer in another league. The rest of both my teams are good enough that I am lucky to be 1-1 and 1-0-1 in another. Hasselback has Branch on the way so I am not as worried about him. I am done with Plummer. I am still deciding on CPepp and will have a better feel after this weekend.

My league has a cap & my only other QB is Leinart. Don't have room to grab a 3rd QB

I've got Delhomme as a backup to Vick and Grossman's available in my league. Guess what? I'm holding on to Delhomme. I've been burned far too many times by overreacting to early season anomalies and dropping players only to have them snatched up by the competition and come back to bite me.

There's not a worse feeling in the FF world than this.

Ineeded an RB, and packaged Bulger and Reggie Wayne to get a back + Kurt Warner. Then picked up Leinart. Outside of 2 weeks (ATL and Chicago), I think they'll light it up all year. I could not STAND to watch the Rams offense one more week. 2 yard passes don't excite me. NO WAY does Bulger throw for as many yards as in the past, and will probably throw for fewer touchdowns. I had to deal him..

Worse than starting a player every week and watching him suck the life from your fantasy team because you sent a high draft choice on him - you until you are a rotting bone dry corpse.I had this feeling with Kevin Jones and Mcgayhee on one of my teams and past up picking up good players.
