Is it too early to call Vince Young a bust (2 Viewers)

Still a tad too early - he's still very young and has time to turn things around, learn his craft at the NFL level and become a good QB. But the window of opportunity is closing.

I personally am thinking no, even Vince has given up on Vince. Whats your guys' thoughts?
I do not think he has the mental wherewithal to be an NFL QB. His skill set is above almost all QBs playing today in the NFL, but he does not possess the intelligence or mental dexterity to play NFL QB in the NFL. I predict he will eventually start at another time and maybe another team BUT it will be the same Vince. He will WOW us with one play with his legs or arm strength; this will indeed entice many fantasy owners catch Michael Vick ..err I mean Vince Young fever. If you got him in a dynasty his value right now is dirt, so do not sell or drop him - wait until next year when the VY fever takes hold and then trade him.

I think he can find a niche in Wildcat formations and the like. I don't think he be a successful full-time BFL QB again. I think he's regressed terribly on and off the field. As he gets older, he'd have to rely less on running and more on throwing (and I don't think he can be a consistent pocket passer).

He'll find his spot in the league. I just don't think he'll be the franchise face again like he was drafted to be.

Vince Young has had similar or better success through three seasons than John Elway, Troy Aikman, Terry Bradshaw, Vinny Testaverde, Phil Simms, Jeff George, Kerry Collins, Drew Bledsoe, Jim Plunkett, Archie Manning and Eli Manning (just to name first round picks). Obviously the direction his career has gone has been discouraging, with his best year being his rookie season and this year being his worst. It's also a bad sign that he's got off the field issues.

But considering his aggregate success plus the weak supporting cast he's played with, I think it's way too early. I'm not saying I'm overly impressed with Young or I want him, just that it's not uncommon for first round picks to be underwhelming through three seasons. He still may turn into a Patrick Ramsey or J.P. Losman or Chris Miller.

yep. Too inconsistent, too screwed up and too stupid.

But you never know......if Jeff George can do it (sort of).....and it is too early to say for sure.

His cast doesn't look that bad to me. Granted we have a small sample size with Young and Chris Johnson in the backfield. Too much is made of his lack of name WRs, but these are NFL quality WRs. This group won't make much happen after the catch, but Vince even had trouble hitting a WR more than 10 yards down field. The guy was taken 3rd overall and here we sit and hope he can be a decent game manager? Smells like a bust to me. Had Young gone rounds 2 or 3, we wouldn't be so harsh on him.

I think you might want to review the careers of John Elway and Drew Bledsoe. Elway was 27-13 after 3 years and Bledsoe had started a Super Bowl. On the other hand you could add Steve McNair to that list.

yea hes busted.... i knew he would never be a vick type player, but thought he could be a donavan.... hes just mentally gone... and once a QB is mentally challenged... (pun intended) hes done...

Those guys may have had good team success, but it doesn't mean they had played well through three years. Both had five more INTs than TDs and a low yards per attempt rates after three years.

Are you implying Vick was better than McNabb.............BRAHAHAHABRAHAHA

I think it's too early to say definitively, but I'd probably put it at a 95% chance of being a bust...which is what I was telling everyone in this forum at the time he was drafted.

He's just not very good at anything other than running the football and that isn't enough in the National Football League.

Seems like a nice guy though, I wouldn't mind seeing him succeed...just don't think it's very likely.

VY has a 19-11 record, they're similar enough.

I'm not sure that you can use a winning percentage as a metric of a player/QB skill set. Teams win (or lose) in spite of a players abilities, there are too many instances of the outcome of a game apart from QB play.

I'm fully aware of that, but if someone is going to argue others records as to why you shouldn't compare them to VY, the argument comes up short.

So you're in the camp that Dilfer >> Marino ??

I don't think he's a bust... yet. IMHO it's all about how/whether he learns from this season. Reportedly, he was unwilling to return to the 1st game of the season after an INT; presumably he was quitting. I'd think it would be illuminating and humbling for most people to go from that depth to witnessing the team go 10-0, led by a QB who does nothing spectacular and merely does nothing to lose the game for his team. If Vince learned more about what it takes to be a true team leader, he may not be done yet. If he learned nothing from this experience, then he's history.

He still may be a bust, but it's too early to say.
My point was that if Young could only hope to aspire to Ramsey. Losman, Miller level...then he should already be classified as a bust. Oh well, sometimes my humor... :missing:

It's actually "late" to not see that he is a bust already. What talent he had at the college level simply does not translate to the NFL.

Since before the 2005 draft, I told colleagues and friends that if he ever led his team to a Super Bowl, I would buy their tickets. Also noting that in the meantime, I'll go with Cutler out of that class. 3 years later, I'm still standing by it and Cutler is the only one of the three who is not riding pine.

I really don't understand this take. Your post suggests Young is a guy who never did a thing right in the NFL, which is hardly the case. Vince was 19-11 in his first 2 seasons. In his rookie season, he led the team to wins in 6 of its last 7 games to get them into a playoff chase, and at that time he was regarded as a team leader. In his second season, Young led the Titans to the playoffs. I agree Cutler looks like he has a bright future, but he was 9-13 as a starter heading into this season and will remain under .500 after this season. He may or may not lead Denver into the playoffs following the game in San Diego next week. How many playoff games did Culter lead Denver to in his first 2 seasons? You don't find it at all contradictory to be driving a nail into Young's casket while trumpeting Cutler?

Through three years, I've got Cutler as one of the top five QBs drafted in the first round. He's really been special.

I've got Young in the big "uneven" group, as he's certainly better than a backup QB but he hasn't really been good or even average. But lots of great first round QBs started their careers that way, too.

If the Broncos had anywhere near the defense that the Titians have and have had, this would be a different conversation. The Broncos have also been through literally about 4 or 5 times the RBs that the Titans have had. That's too inconsistent to bring any amount of measurable success.Young has been smoke and mirrors. Old man Kerry Collins has that team as the no. 1 seed... with essentially the same guys as when Young was behind center outside of Chris Johnson. They said he didn't have receivers. No. His receivers didn't have a quarterback. That team has been built to win for years now. They just needed a quarterback.

And yet when VY took over for Collins as a rookie, the team improved. I think you're underestimating CJ. Jones was out a lot of last year, McCareins is back on the team this year, the D has improved from the 8th to 2nd best - but I guess that's VY's fault too?

I am not sure Vince Young really wants it.

One thing is certain, he will never have the success he had in college in the NFL.

When the defense has to stay on the field more and are almost relied on to win the game themselves... yea.The Titans took Vince Young to the playoffs, not the other way around. The QB takes his team to the playoffs with 9 TD passes and 17 interceptions on the year? Not counting the fumbles and sacks? Give me a break.ETA: 9 TD passes in a 16-game season is a record "low."That does not equal a capable QB.

Oh please. Vince young was drafted at 1.03 in the draft, so I'd say he joined a worse team than Cutler and yet had a 66% winning percentage his first 2 seasons. How can anyone claim "That team has been built to wins for years now" when they were drafting #3 in the 2006 draft? And, it's "essentially the same team" except for the most explosive offensive rookie? Is that all?

The Titan D has been on the field 2 less plays per game this year, is that significant? Titans gave up 4.8 yards per play last year, this year it's 4.42008 - The D has given up 9 TDs through the air on the year with 18 INTs2007 - The D had given up 21 TDs through the air on the year with 22 INTsCollins has thrown 11 TDs, impressive?Collins has been a good game manager, but lets not pretend the Titans improvement is all VY vs. Collins.

"Bank on him"? I just gave my opinion the jury is very much still out. If anyone else misconstrued that as "bank on him" - don't.
