Is it wrong to root against your team? (1 Viewer)

S.K.A.

After watching tonights' game, I just feel like the quicker the Raiders get/got exposed, the better. I hated the Aaron Brooks signing and was very worried about Tom Walsh coming back. I cannot think of a game where I have seen a poorer game plan than tonight. Whose brilliant idea was it to have Lamont Jordan block Shawn Merriman while Aaron Brooks takes a seven step drop?

Yeah, I am pissed and irrational right now, but I hope we get two or three more games like tonight. I want there to be no doubt that the Raiders have been and still are in complete denial. It seems like Al Davis & Co. have been trying to beat a square peg into a round hole for three or four years now. My god, how can you allow that many sacks.

I actually expect Art Shell to have that O-line improve, but when do they hit rock bottom? Everytime I think they can't get any worse.... Tom Walsh should buy a freaking plane ticket back up to Idaho, find his favorite room in that f-ing bed 'n breakfast, hide under the bed and never come out.

This team has the collective football I.Q. of a banana peel. :graduate:

In summary, I don't think this team needs more high first round draft picks, it needs a change in philosophy. The defense played well when it didn't matter. I have never seen a team be more out of it when only trailing by 13 points. At no point did the Chargers ever feel like they had some competition tonight.

I'm going to bed.

Is it wrong to root against your own team? When that team is the Oakland Raiders, then HECK NO! Everyone else is already rooting against you, so you might as well try and fit in! :lmao: Actually, at this point, I'm almost beginning to feel sorry for Raiders fans. ALMOST. I mean, I hate them with every fiber of my Bronco-supporting being, but their fans deserve better than this. I don't mind the thought of Al Davis rolling over in that grave he's already halfway into, but Raiders fans have always been very loyal, and they really just deserve better.

Maybe it's time to pick another team.

Then again, I've been (and will continue to be) a Browns fan my whole life, so I can see where you're coming from. I do believe it takes a couple of really awful games for an organization to wake up (although Lions fans may disagree) and change. So maybe it's not so wrong of you to wish for that.

Perhaps you presented a good logical argument in the first post of this thread, and having not read it I might not be in the best position to comment.

However, I think the answer to this question is unequivocally "yes". That's my first instinctive response, anyway.

Aaron Brooks was NOT the problem tonight. The throws were good, and the scrambling was better.

NOBODY can throw the ball with 1.5 seconds in the pocket every pass.

I was going to say how you can never root against your team, the biggest problem with fantasy football is that it blurs team loyalty, etc, etc. But if you are a Raider fan, then by all means. That was pathetic.

The seven step drops were ridiculous, but so was the defensive "game plan." Start the game in the nickel, against:

A)Schottenheimer

B)Tomlinson

C)QB making his first start.

You think maybe theyre going to run?

Even as a Chiefs fan I hope the raiders turn this around. Although we may actually be able to beat you this year, the rivalry is much better when both teams are playing well.

Actually, Im good either way:schadenfreude:

Ok, read your post. I don't think Brooks is to blame tonight, and in fact I think he played fairly well given the circumstances. It seemed to me like every time he stepped up into the pocket, a San Diego DLman's arm would be wrapped around his body or up in his grill. He didn't have any time to throw.

It's too early to say whether or not Shell should be held entirely accountable for that pathetic showing (although he definitely should be called out for abandoning the run), but I would definitely say that the Raiders have quite a few turds on their roster.

Wow. Un####ingbelievable.

Jerry Porter, OAK Sep. 12 - 1:49 am et

Jerry Porter was reportedly "seen laughing and pumping his fist along the bench when (Aaron) Brooks was sacked a seventh time" Monday night.

Porter, who was inactive for the contest, can't be in the Raiders' plans for this season. He probably hasn't been traded or released only because of the large cap hit Oakland would take as a result.

That's an outrage.

This deserves it's own thread.

Surprisingly, not really. While I hate the Raiders franchise, most of that is directed towards Al Davis. I have to say that I'm going to get along pretty well with any fans who cares as much about their team as Raiders fans usually do. As long as they don't come at the expense of the Broncos, I don't really mind the Raiders getting a few more wins a year, or at least not looking as pathetic in their losses, if for no other reason than to better represent the AFC West, best division in football.

I guess another way to phrase it is that I am rooting that the Raiders wake-up. If that means a wake-up call, then so be it.

No, I don't think it's wrong. You are rooting for your team to improve, and unfortunately that might mean doing poorly enough they wake up.

I went through the same thing last year with the Texans. The last thing the Texans needed was to have the team go 5-11 or 6-10 and feel like what they were doing under Capers and Casserly was working, but they just needed a little more time to turn it around. If they did poorly enough, it would be crystal clear they needed to turn the page on the current regime.

I don't feel like a bad fan at all for having been fine with the fact they were losing if it meant the team could get to where they should be sooner. (All comments about how they spent the first pick in the draft aside...)

I'm with you, I've been a loyal Raider fan through thick and thin my whole life. But this is Nicole Richie thin. All the red flags were there before the season started. Bringing back Shell and Walsh, Jerry Porter, the first two preseason games and the final one were signs to me that it was going to be another long season. Blame Brooks, the O-line, Walsh, Shell but it all starts at the top with Al Davis. Things will never change in Oakland until Davis gives up control or dies, bottom line. I will not invest anymore of my time or energy rooting or watching this pathetic franchise until Davis stops trying to recapture past glory with a dinosaur offense and dinosaur coaches. Jon Gruden was the best thing to happen to the Raiders in the past 20 years, because he was given the chance to bring in a new philosophy and energy. If I were Art Shell I'd be embarrased to the point of telling Davis to come down from his box and coach the team himself.

I agree. As a decent human being, it's tough to despise the weak, helpless, and handicapped. However, as a Chiefs fan...I have problems of my own.

as a saints fan, i feel your pain. there have been years - decades, perhaps - when it was a real chore to love the saints.

Rooting against your team so they'll get on the ball and make healthy, long-term changes= good.

Rooting against your team so your fantasy team can do better= terrible. That's what I thought this thread was going to be about.

No way! My Redskins come first. I don't care how badly I need pts in fantasy football, if those pts would hinder the Redskins winning then I don't want them and root against them!

Hail To The Redskins!

I don't give a corn-filled crap about fantasy football in the grand scheme of things. I just want the Raiders (Al Davis & Co.) to pull their head out of their ###.

One of my favorite memories was meeting Al Davis after a monday night blowout in Denver. It was the first year the Broncos actually won a superbowl. I'll never forget it. Oakland got absolutley waxed. I think the score was 31-3. Chester McGlockton sat at the end of the bench just reveling in the Raider crap-fest. I just wanted to put a bullet through his ear-hole (i.e. Jerry Porter last night).

Anyway, after the game, there was a huge contingent of Raider fans screaming their guts out for Oakland as the players were getting on the bus. Every player quickly shuffled past us fans on their way to get into the bus. I just got the distinct impression that the players really didn't care that the fans were still there and still cheering them on. Tim Brown walks by, dressed to the nines. He sheepishly looks over at us fans, walks about two more steps, then throws his athletic bag on the ground, unzips it and puts on a Raider hat. He walks over to the fans and starts signing autographs. I have a picture of him signing something for me. He just kept thanking us for sticking with them and that they would try and get some more wins for us. The fans were all cheering for Tim and after about 10 minutes, he grabbed his bag and went into the bus.

About five minutes later, Al Davis comes from the stadium heading towards the bus. We went crazy cheering for him. He walks over to all of the fans and starts yelling at us to shut-up. Needless to say, we went silent. Now I can't remember his exact words, but I'll never forget the context of what he said. Basically he said that we got our ###es kicked tonight. He then pointed both his index fingers at us, as if aiming two guns and said he guaranteed that there would be changes and that the Raiders would be back. You could tell he was so pissed and so matter-of-fact that I actually felt like Oakland would be alright.

After seeing how bad of shape he was in at the Hall of Fame Game, I think Al will not be around much longer. I just hope that he will relinquish his control to someone that is competent and every bit as stubborn and prideful as Al. The only difference being, I hope the next 'guy' will not continue to beat a square peg into a round hole.

That was a great story. Nice to hear that Brown took the time to spend a moment with the fans and Al Davis (in his own way) wanted to let the fans know that he wasn't happy.

This is off-topic but I'd like to hear more fan stories like that; the ones that reveal emotions we don't see on TV.

I agree completely. I was raised a Bengals fan so I know what's it like to maintain love for a losing team (in the past) but I would never root against Palmer or Chad for example just b/c I don't own them. I would much rather lose a fantasy game then see my team lose!!!
